:)

Just happened to be looking at the "Ask a Cruise Question" board and someone who is going on an RCI ship asked if blenders were allowed. They don't want to pay $5 for non-alcoholic daquaries.

Just one more item to add to your packing list!!

I've heard of people bringing those small portable blenders onboard to make their own "frozen drinks". I think they have battery operated travel ones you can get too.

Along with the propane-powered Weber Grill (charcoal is so inconvenient to lug around), I'm packing the portable firepit for the balcony. Wood is no problem, there's a plentiful supply of teak deck chairs on the lower promenade deck. The Prinsendam has a fireplace in the Oak Room, why can't I have on in my cabin?

Made sure that the teak has not been treated, otherwise it could be dangerous. To be on the safe side do like I do and have 1/2 a cord of wood delivered to your stateroom. (If it's an Alaska cruise you may want a full cord).

OK, I confess, the new Signature of Excellence program will now save me the trouble of smuggling my own mattress from home on board on my next cruise. I'm so glad they upgraded the beds! The space bags helped on my last two cruises, but it was a tight fit! We have a king size mattress and for some reason the airline insisted we check it through and would not allow it as a carry on. Then... oh well I guess you can get the picture. It's not pretty.

Thank goodness we no longer have to do that!!

Not all ships have received the new mattresses in all cabins. You may want to bring your mattress to be on the safe side. You could also hollow out the mattress and stuff a cow in it, to make sure you have the freshest beef possible.

How much does ship's services charge for that??? :D ;) Or, does one need to smuggle it aboard? It's ridiculously expensive to purchase it from HAL. They allow you to bring it on board so you don't have to smuggle it. But they just raised the kindling fee (akin to corkage) to $17.50 a fire, plus 15% gratuity. So I think it's obviously best to sneak it on board.

For those people who like to stick to the rules I carefully went through my know before you go booklet and it does not mention anything about firewood.

BTW, be smart about it and make sure the wood is seasoned.

How difficult is it to squeeze the air out of a space bag with a cow inside a mattress inside it?? Or ... should I also bring a vacuum cleaner to suck the air out??

15% Gratuity????? Do they light it for you, or is that for the Steward who delivers it to your cabin?Revneal, all these questions. I thought you were an experienced HAL cruiser.:D

The wood is delivered along with my luggage while I'm at the Lido having the first of my seven meals that day. (Keep in mind it's the first day and I didn't get on the ship until afternoon. That's how I'm able to get by with only 7 meals.)

Anyhow, the fee is obviously for the person who lights it, otherwise they would not charge each time the fire is lit.

:D :DI think it's only common sense that you refrain from fires while in port. While at sea the movement of the ship should keep the smoke away from your cabin and only bother those that are aft of you (but who cares about them anyway). Just remember to douse the fire before going to bed if there is a port stop the next day.

You guys have forgotten about the deck BBQ!!!! There are already grills onboard - just swipe one for your balcony - they won't miss it!

Come to think of it - open up all the connecting balcony doors - grab one of the ice sculptures, put it in Vicar's metal tub, when it melts - use flatwallet's diesel trimmer for the whirlpool action and you have your own personal jacuzzi!

Personally, I am bringing my own iron - who cares if you are not supposed to iron the room! The Vista class doesn't even have laundry facilities - so how are you supposed to remove those stubborn winkles caused by packing the mattress?!!

The proper wine with pizza depends upon whether you want a white or red pizza. If you like anchovies on your pizza, a good reisling (remember fish and white wine) or if you like pepperoni or sausage - a medium cabernet would suffice. Bring on those cases of wine!!!

For grilled cheese sandwiches, we would recommend a good rose'.

All you folks are forgetting the obvious - you're aboard one of the biggest fishing boats out there, so we're planning on bringing all our fishing equipment. When you're at sea, you can get some pretty good trolling speed, and while in port, well you've got a lot more options than just the expensive shore excursions.

Of course, we have to have a balcony cabin, cause we won't want to get others too jealous by casting in front of them. The balcony will come in handy when it comes time to fillet the big guys you catch, as you don't have to worry about what to do with the innards - just slip them over the edge. The folks downstairs shouldn't have too much slime on their balconies, and besides, it will just wash off IF it rains! There's nothing quite like fresh fish barbecued on your own balcony while watching some part of the world pass by. Ummm, Ummm, Ummm.

We'll bring the marshmallows and graham crackers. I'm sure we can swipe some chocolate off the buffet for s'mores over the fire. DH can bring his 12-string to add to the ‘musical ensemble’ we’ve been amassing.

I’m glad ger 77 brought up the fishing gear. I was wondering when it was going to be mentioned. For Alaska and NE cruises will also need crab and lobster pots.

Funny you should mention that. While we were eating dinner, I said to my husband that if the orginal poster from "Ask a Cruise Question" ever saw what we posted from their original post, they may think it so funny.

I have a boring attachment for my diesel powered chain saw. If I bore a well, put in a windlass and bucket and rope we can draw water and heat it in a number one wash tub and DW has a scrub board and then there will be a laundromat aboard the Westerdam. And if you don't like recycled sea water you will have some fresh cool water to drink. :)

Thanks , I'll pay you when I see you on the ship :)

One Dale Earnhart shirt coming up - it's 75% off at Target here in Denver - we must not be a big racing town...

Anyone else? Maybe some Martha Stewart tablecloths from K-Mart (for our balcony BBQ, of course!) Or better yet, girls - how about some "Kathy Lee" clothes for our formal night?

Oops, I forgot - my DH has a few "do-rags"... a couple "pirate" themed and a few "smiley face" - any of you guys out there getting a bit light in the hair dept. - maybe we can interest you? Sure helps to prevent sunburn...

Did someone say CAKE??? Well. the best thing with cake is HomeMade Ice Cream. I will just have to bring my Ice Cream Maker and several 20 lb bags of Rock Salt. I am sure if we are going to Alaska that we can get a bunch of Ice from Hubbard Glacier. Since we have the Cow for fresh Cream and the chicken for fresh eggs, oh yes I forgot sugar, well that is a job for us women folk we can go to the Lido with our blue plastic Wal Mart bags (I will bring extra) and get all the little packets of sugar. It might take awhile to open up say 3500 little sugar packets but what the heck we have nothing better to do on Sea Days. Oh, one more thing does anyone else have room to bring a keg of Vanilla Extract?

Chain Saw ... who's gonna bring the Chain saw?? And what about Gas for it? And .. when you're chopping up Bessie for dinner, she'll make quite a mess. Why don't you have them drain the Lido pool and then you can carve her in there ... next to the ice-sculpture carvings. Won't that be nice?

Vicar
July 24th, 2004, 12:39 PM
REV,

thats an excellent idea about the pool, plenty of work space, good drainage, and self cleaning when they fill the pool back up.

And seeing that we will already be on the Lido deck , we can just do this on the night of the Deck BBQ and use HALs grills .

This way we can save the firewood that is stored on my balcony for building an ice fishing hut , for when we get to Alaska

And now for a more serious note.
Bulletin from the Headquarters of Blenders International. Due to a recent influx of blenders being taken aboard cruise ships sailing in international waters it becomes necessary to augment the following guidelines. To Wit:
All blenders must be under 53 pounds with a footprint of no more than 4’ by 4’.
No blender may be powered by steam or kerosene*
Blenders powered by turbine engines must fall under the guidelines of International Turbine Engine Association.
Capacity of any blender must not exceed 80 imperial gallons.
Blenders powered by alternating current must be approved by the Good Housekeeping Society and bear their seal of approval.
All blenders must be equipped with a fire retardant system. (Overhead sprinklers, Halide, CO2 are approved)
* Exception: turbine engines powered by K-1 Kerosene

And the list goes on..entirely too long for perusal on Saturday night. :)

Enjoy your weekend...You've earned it after this thread.

There shouldn't be any problem bringing your cannon onto the plane. Have you ever seen some of those people who work security? Besides the regulations say no weapons or firearems. Can you immage someone picking up your cannon and firing it? Ship the shells UPS so you won't have any explosive material. Besides - let them x-ray it if they have a large enough machine. If not - they will just have to hand check it like they do the luggage.

Of course it may not fit into the overhead compartment or under your seat, but what the heck - pay for an extra seat and have it removed from the plane.

Thanks for the input about getting thru ATL airport screeners. Got a better deal. Since this cannon has a significant historical value and after communicating with the officials there they jumped overboard at the idea of this relic being displayed on a cruise ship in international waters. They are going to provide the necessary crating materials and shipment to the ship. Of course, and unbeknownst to them, there is skullduggery going on here inasamuch as this dbl barrel gun is going to be used for skeet shooting.
As Sherlock Holmes would say "the game is afoot".

Only 17 gallons??? Our out-house uses more than that!! (And that's for each flush!)

:)
KK are these your distillery plans ????

Stream Table Plans (metal tub)

Based on design by Mark Wagner

This stream table has an aluminum or stainless steel tub rather than the wooden tub used in the original Missouri Department of Conservation design. Other modifications from the Missouri model include wooden "saw horse" stands rather than automotive jacks, an optional battery or 12-volt transformer hook-up to provide power to the re-circulating pump, and a sink drain mounted in the tub.

The initial cost of the metal tub design is higher, but it is much more durable and requires less maintenance than the wood design. It also can be used to simulate an archeological dig (used with dry matrix), as a fish cleaning station during fishing workshops, as a shallow aquatic display, as a table for temporary displays of animal pelts or botanical specimens, or anywhere you need a large flat sink.

Approximate costs of some items:

plastic matrix $350 - $450

metal tub $300 - $400

pump motor $15+

Materials list:

• Aluminum or stainless steel tub; 80 by 32 inches; constructed from 4x8-foot sheet of aluminum or stainless steel

• 2, 10-foot pine 1-inch by 8-inch boards (or 1-inch by 10-inch with stainless steel)

• kitchen sink drain (save the drain stopper for other uses of the tub)

• plumber’s putty or silicon caulk

• plastic tail pipe for sink drain, with screw connector to easily remove from drain bottom for transport (1-foot to 2-foot, can be cut to length)

• 4, 1/2-inch threaded rods, each 4-foot long

• 8 washers and 8, 1/2-inch nuts for threaded rods

• 4, 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch eye bolts, 8 nuts and washers for eye bolts (for tie downs)

• 8 angle braces with wood screws

• 18-20 metal, bonded to rubber, washers for tub support on wood frame

• 1, 3/4-inch ball type, street valve (brass)

• Plexiglas or aluminum plate for mounting street valve

• 2, plastic 90° elbows (one side threaded for street valve the other for 3/4-inch plastic tubing)

• 2, plastic 90° elbows (both ends for 3/4-inch plastic tubing)

• 14 feet of clear plastic tubing, 3/4-inch inside diameter (I.D.), 7 feet of the tubing should be very flexible and 7 feet of the tubing (to be mounted on tub) can be a more rigid 3/4-inch anhydrous ammonia tubing (found at a farm supply store)

• 2 hose clamps for 3/4-inch tubing

• 2 handles for carrying stream table, and wood screws for mounting

• 8 copper pipe straps and nails, for 3/4-inch pipe

• 13 gallon, or larger kitchen wastebasket or tub, 22 to 24 inches tall

• smaller wastebasket, tub, or bucket to fit inside larger one (above)

• submersible pump (360 gallons per hour)

• electrical transformer, input: 110 volt A.C., output: 12-volts D.C., 300 m A (same voltage output as a 12-volt car battery)

• optional 12-volt automotive battery

• connecting jack or alligator clips to connect automotive battery or transformer to submersible pump cord (9-volt battery connectors can be bought from electronics suppliers)

• plastic pitcher 1

• fine mesh for lining pitcher

• 4, 8-foot long 2-inch by 4-inch pine boards (saw horse bases)

• 4-inch decking or sheet rock screws, enough for saw horse and tub frame construction

• 10, 5-gallon buckets to carry matrix and other supplies

• 2 plastic grain scoops for moving matrix

• PVC reducing collar (4-inch to 3-inch) that will fit tightly inside the top of the sink drain; purchase at a farm supply store (used on perforated, PVC drainage tile)

Steps for construction of metal stream table (see diagrams also):

1. Contract the construction of the 32-inch by 80-inch aluminum or stainless steel tub. Aluminum should be at least .040 guage; stainless steel can be thinner. Stitch weld four aluminum angle stiffeners to the tub bottom. Weld all corners and seams to be watertight. Double roll top edges to eliminate any exposed sharp edges or cover with edging for steel doors.

2. Construct a 1-inch by 8-inch (or 1-inch by 10-inch) pine board frame for the tub, using both decking screws and metal angles to support corners. A 10-foot board can be cut to form one side and one end piece.

3. Place the aluminum tub in the wooden frame so the bottom of the angle stiffeners are flush with the bottom of the wood frame. Drill holes in wood frame so a 1/2-inch threaded rod can pass through each side of the wooden frame and the space in the stiffeners. Place washers and nuts on each end of the threaded rod. Use glue or Locktite to make sure the nuts will not loosen.

4. Mount two eye bolts on the bottom of each side of the stream table for tie downs when transporting the stream table on top of a vehicle. Saw horse bases can be placed in the stream table, and all tied down with ropes. Remove the PVC tail pipe drain prior to

I'm a little concerned about storage in the bathroom, so I am bringing a cabinet kit from the Home Depot to put together once on board. The box isn't very deep, but it is long and weighs about 100 pounds. Do you think the stewards will mind putting it togher for me and delivering it that way? They could just tape a luggage tag on the top shelf so doesn't get confused with anyone else's shelves.

Also, do they sell charcol in the gift shop? I'm sure my bottle of lighter fluid will last the week, but the charcol bag only lasts for about 3 verandah cook outs. I'll need more than that, but it so much trouble to bring more than 1 bag along with the kettle drum grill. What do you all think?

Oh, and one more comfort and convenience item. I know they are always taking down the ceiling fans on "Trading Spaces," but I absolutley must have one on at night and since my husband is quite handy with electrical issues, we are able to travel with one. Are the ceilings made of a substance that his drill will be able to complete the installation quickly? I hate it when we come upon a ceiling that is difficult to drill. Sometimes it leaves large holes which do so bother me during our vacation...imagine, having to look up at holes around your personal ciling fan.....really bothersome!

I know when people stay in the room after us, they know by the nice smoky smell that we had a grill and are sorry we didn't leave it for them. And the ceiling fan.....well when they stare up at the frayed wires above their heads and see the now empty mounting brackets, they are so very sad we removed it before disembarkation. I've heard they call the stewards to complain about the wires hanging. Well, I say to them, you should have remembered to pack your ceiling fan too.

Now, how convenient is that??? Do you think people will sit on it if I store it in the hall outside my stateroom? I would hate for it to be sat upon before I get it home.

Take this is as a warning. If you see an oversized couch outside a room on the 8th deck, stay off, please.

I just got back from Wal Mart today and bought some beautiful NASCAR approved curtains for the main dining room.

imagine how much more special Dutch Night will be with the images of Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty looking down at us as we eat.

Also some of the artwork on HAL needs to be brought up to date.

I have some beautiful lithographs of the "Classics" ( you know "Dogs Playing Poker" and the like)

And a portrait of Elvis painted on genuine Velvet that is just awe inspiring.

Help!!! I am running out of room. Thus far my accumulation is a 3 cylinder diesel powered weed eater, a 3 cylinder lightweight diesel powered chain saw with boring attachment, a well, a number 1 wash tub with scrub board (and I forgot to mention the homemade lye soap requiring a tub of lard and potash to make it), a double barrel Civil War cannon, all to be placed on a 41 square ft. verandah. This morning DW reminded me that I have to take my sleep apnea machine and I replied nooooo problem. WRONG!! This little jewel requires distilled water and I have doubts that HAL is got this stuff in the stores...ssooo you know what this means. By the time I crowd the still in the room I have it figured out...We sleep in the hall on the floor.

Help!!! I am running out of room. ...snip... We sleep in the hall on the floor. Nah - tthat's one of the advantages of the chain saw. Just carve some space out of the cabin next door. After all, it IS your vacation. You deserve it.

Good Advice! However the people on either wide are vacationing as well. And besides, DW says I look lilke Dr. Lector from the movie "Silence of the Lambs" when I have my apnea mask on and I certainly don't want to scare anybody to death. Not a pretty sight.
And so it goes..having to sleep in the hall with no power outlets to electrify the apnea machine means renting a diesel powered electrical generator (do you suppose the noise will disturb the neighbors?), and no bath room means renting one of them little porta potties (like you see at the Nascar events..really nasty) and etc.

There are outlets in the hallways as well as next to the bathrooms. No problem there for your machine.

Have a good time on the Westerdam. We will all be anxious for a review of your cruise and the ship.

P.S. - tell us which cabin you are enlarging with your chain saw so that when we are on the Westerdam in January, we will know which cabin to check out.

These are all good money-saving ideas for making a cruise comfortable yet economical. However, I'm concerned that even the back-up cruise ship may not be enough. I've read on these boards about the general decline in the quality of the onboard entertainment (as compared to the Good Old Days, of course). Do you think it would be rude if I brought along the Rockettes and asked the HAL show cast to please step aside and let me enjoy the production number the way I want it? Would this be OK (a) only on formal nights, (b) only on casual nights, or (c) any d**n time I want? And could I please replace the comedian with my own juggler? I do so prefer jugglers.

After all, I've saved up for a long time for this cruise, and intend to enjoy myself.

You talk about taking stuff from the Lido, but it's not so far fetched.

When I was a teenager I worked as a lifeguard at a hotel in the Catskill Mountains. The guests would ask the waiters for "falatahs". This was food they could take back to the room "for later".

Ask the little ole ladies ONLY if you want to spend your cruise sorting out all the tupperware after use, according to the names inscribed on masking tape on the bottoms, so you can return each and every piece (after washing in the jacuzzi, of course) to the correct little ole lady.

I still remember having to do this with all of the identical glass oval-cake-plate-and-punch-cup sets that the ladies in the coach/manufactured home/certainly not trailer park brought to my grandfather-in-law's 90th birthday. As far as I could tell, only 2 patterns of these things were ever made, but you can bet your poopdeck that every lady wanted her very own cup matched to her very own plate and put back in her (also labeled) original box. We had stacks and stacks of these things.

If they can mix up their own drinks nice and fresh, I've got a couple of questions. I like my beef really really fresh. Do you think they would mind if I brought a cow along? They could butcher it up nicely in the kitchen for me. I only eat steak occasionally, so I'll only need one piece, but it so much more economical to buy the whole cow. I save almost .37 cents per pound on the steak, and the rest the waiters could help the chefs wrap and package for me to take home. Oh my goodness, this will save so much over having to have the stockyard butcher it for me. If you brought your own tupperware, you might even get a cents off discount for taking a small portion home yourself.

stillfrantic, back on page two orcrone asked ryansmemom to bring the cow in her mattress so we should have fresh beef, then later on I believe revneal gave the suggestion to slaughter the cow in one of the pools that we would drain. but then again since so many want to attend this wonderful cruise you better bring along an extra cow. We might need 3 or 4 more. Someone has already agreed to bring the chain saw for slaughter.

Twas the day of the sailing and all through the ship
The passengers were scurrying to find the right slip.
The crew were all standing in front of the boats
And, Wait a minute..it’s Revneal with two white coats.
The pax were lined up for roll call you see
And when their names called they answered with glee.
Here Vicar, Here KK, Here Orcrone and Sail7Sea
Uh oh what’s that you say..she’s not here to be?
Oh she’s resting her self from her Maasdam spree.
Here Cactus Lady, let’s get on with the show.
The ship she’s awaiting for the Captain to blow
The big horn and push from the row
Of piers and halyards cast off from below.
The pax all rested on deck now flying at sea
Out by the pool lies Superstein with the
Blender a running and making a brew
With ice, rum and good old Mountain Dew.
The peta people are here in a force
To protect those poor skeets from total remorse.
A protected species those skeets they cry
As more and more the skeets they do fly
It’s now time for the ladies to man the gun
Exalthim is vying to be the best one.
If your name was not called don’t get in a snit
This one finger typing is aching to quit.
Goodbye one and all and to all a good night.

Does the DirectTV man charge extra to install 190-channel satellite television in my cabin so I can watch "The Travel Channel" on my 72" plasma TV / 8 speaker surround sound home (ok... cruise) theater system?

Being there is OK I suppose, but nothing is as real as when you watch it on 72 inches of high-definition video.

I would like to offer my services as a judge for the Beauty Contest. Do you think we could sneak in a couple of those rockettes or maybe get a belly dancer or two?

How could I have missed this one??!!!

I have to bring a big bungee cord so we can go bungee diving off the side of the ship. Just better make sure that we properly note which deck for each bungee cord, or we may go dunking instead of bungeeing.

Oh, I'm sure they're applauding too. Provided there is enough pickled herring in the Lido.

By the way, while researching for the other thread on whether turtle shell items are legal to bring back into the U.S., I learned that bringing in hunting trophies can be OK, provided certain requirements are met. We'd better bring along a taxidermist for the skeets we bring down. ;)

Wait.....one of our party has the clap??? Quick, someone sign up to bring a gynecologist.

There must surely be a discount on the fare if you bring your own doctor.

I wondered what Flatwallet meant by that . I thought he meant you were being escorted to the ship by two men in White Coats *LOL*

Forget the doctors. The people we really, really need to bring along are bepsf's friends from the new "champagne" thread:

...someone is bound to send you a bottle of Champagne.

When my bosses go on big vacations, I always make sure that they have Champagne and flowers in their hotel awaiting them. So when I arrived in my suite on the Oosterdam there they were: TWO bottles of Champagne, a bottle of red wine and two trays of chocolate-dipped strawberries!

Isn't that why HAL gives you those little cards in your docs to hand out to your friends - so that they'll know how to order things for you?

yea where do you get friends like that?

Whenever I tell my friends I am going on vacation , they tell me to bring THEM stuff back *LOL*

I shouldn't totally say that. When I went on my honeymoon, the people at work sent us a beautiful fruit and food basket to our cabin

Anyone eat horse ????? They keep beating a dead horse on this discussion kids' dress codes (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=59327) LOL

The kids dress code is very important

When I am on the sports deck, rifle in hand, and I yell "PULL" , I don't want to see those "skeets" in jeans and T shirts and sneakers.

It takes away from the sport

Let's start a thread about whether it would ok to wear fur on informal night! And does it depend on whether you're in the Caribbean, Alaska or near St. Petersburg? Can't wait to see some people weigh in on that.
