Take heart; there is always rain in the Alaska forecast; it's called liquid sunshine;) That doesn't mean it'll actually happen, or that it will rain all day, or that it will impede your enjoyment of a beautiful part of the world. Bon Voyage!:)

The lower panhandle of Alaska is a temperate rain forrest. The flora has some species related to those found in Hawaii! The locals are accustomed to it, and a little rain doesn't interfere with much of anything. Enjoy the cruise

Thanks for calming me down, middle-adged mom. Here in San Diego, we haven't had any measurable rain for several months. The third driest year ever. When it rains here, it's the top story on the 5 o'clock news! I'm still packing an umbrella, though.

Wow, no rain for months?? Well, your skin is just going to love the nice, fresh, clean, moist air of Southeast Alaska! Just like Bumper said, it is a temperate rain forest, so yes, take the umbrella, and hopefully, you won't need it.......much!;)

The dirty little secret is that the weather forecasts only have validity for about three days. After that, you are seeing the average climate for the area of interest. The average climate in the Alaskan Peninsula is showery, so that is what it shows. For San Diego, it will show sunny for the entire period.

Look up almost any place, and the weather prediction for days 4-10 will be about the same, and typical of that place's climate.

Another plus is that you never have to worry about forest fires in a temperate rain forest!:)

My theory for Alaska is PLAN for Rain and be thrilled for sunshine. If you take a look at our June 17th Noordam Roll Call. For the 2 weeks before I did weather forecast daily and all the way till we left and it still said rain every day. I joked we would call it the Noordam Ark:D Well guess what, we hardly seen rain. Every port day and the day at Glacier Bay we had glorious sunshine. Now there is a down side to sunshine believe it or not but the animals sightings whales, bears, puffins are all reduced when the sun is shining because they all prefer to be out and about when it is raining. So for my next Alaska cruise I will be singing "Let it Rain, Let it Rain, Let it Rain" not "Let it Snow"

Just because the weather forecast says Rain doesn't mean it will rain all day, if at all.

However, I'd never leave the ship on an Alaska cruise without at least a rain coat...

Sounds like what we had at this time of the year last year.

All,

Reminds me of the old joke we told when I grew up in the Pacific Northwest: What's the difference between Washington state winter and summer? Answer: in winter, they wear sweatshirts and blue jeans, while in summer they wear sweatshirts and cut-off blue jeans.

Yes, it almost certainly will rain sometime during your cruise, usually what I call "intermittent malicious showers," but not all day. You also will likely have breath-stopping sun breaks over a glistening snow-capped peak over a tree-clad harbor, a view that would cost a million bucks an ounce if you could package it. I've sailed to Ketchican and Juneau as a commercial fisherman and as a U.S. Navy Sailor, and I can't wait to sail even further as a pampered HAL cruiser! (penciled in for 2009!)

Pack raingear, by all means, but don't worry - it won't spoil your fun! I had one of the best times in my life kayaking in the rain in Ketchikan.

We kayaked in the rain in Ketchikan last year. We loved it! It was the first time we'd ever done it, but my husband braved a few photos. (We saw many, many bald eagles and starfish and just lovely Alaskan scenery.) Here is a shot of me doing all the work. Heh. Notice the rain on my hat and the 'lifevest'. We also had FREEZING rain in Sitka (Zaandam, end of July-early August) and beautiful sunshine in Juneau. We went prepared for rain every day, though, and we weren't sorry we hauled our rain stuff along.

There's a really awesome website that I love. It's been over a month since we got back from our Oosterdam trip to Alaska, but I still like to check out www.alaskawebcams.org (http://www.alaskawebcams.org) to see what the weather is like up there. I noticed that when we were at Mendenhall Glacier last May 14 that we could walk up pretty close to the lake's edge to see the glacier but the webcam shows that the area is pretty flooded now and you can't get as close. You will can also see how the weather is doing.

Thanks so much for the great web cam link. This just gave me some new ones to post for my daily "Where the HAL Ships are":)
