Hello:
After disembarking from a cruise and spending time in Rome...has anyone done a long day trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast? If so, can you recommend a tour company and/or driver...english speaking.
Thanks

i spend a week every July on Amalfi Coast
it is a far distance, i think you would be better to train from Rome to Naples, then from Naples you can ferry to Capri or Positano, etc...
train from rome to naples is about 2 hours minimum
I do not know bus companies or such

We spent a week in Amalfi after spending time in Rome in 2004. It is a several hour drive from Rome to Amalfi. There are several tours of the Amalfi coast available from private cars to coaches. Getting there the train is a good option. There are probably some ferries that operate out of the port of Rome that will take you to Naples as well.

I lived in Naples 6 years, and have driven a car on the Amalfi Drive many times, including twice at night (I don't recommend it :D .)
Visiting the Amalfi Coast from Rome is not easy, but doable. Do it if you can -- it is easily one of the most stupendously beautiful patches on Earth!
I would try first to find a company that runs bus tours from Rome to the Amalfi Coast; there are several, although I have not personally taken one except the USO, which is open only to active or retired military. The other way is to take the train from Termini to Naples and go from there. Do you speak Italian, at least a little? When you arrive in Naples, you arrive at Piazza Garibaldi, and on the lower level of the large station is the Circumvesuviana ("around Vesuvius") train company, which will take you to Sorrento. From there, you can find English-launguage bus tours of the Coast (as well as hydrofoils to Capri, which also run from Naples, if that interests you.)
All in all, if you are not willing to spend the night in the region, your best bet is probably to get a tour running out of Rome for a long, but single day. I have done the train itinerary I described from Naples, and it is a long day; doing it from Rome would make for a very long day, with not much margin for delay (of course there will be delay in southern Italy).

After disembarking from a cruise and spending time in Rome...has anyone done a long day trip from Rome to the Amalfi Coast?Does your ship stop in Naples? We took the ship's Amalfi Coast excursion from there and enjoyed it very much. If you're planning to go to Pompeii that would be a much better day trip from Rome.

We're doing a pre-cruise stay in Positano. I hired Fabrizio from allarounditaly.net to drive us from Rome to Positano and then back to the ship. I'm sure if you contact him he can create a tour for you. I imagine that it will be a long day but I know that he regularly drives from his home in Rome to the Naples port, does an Amalfi tour and drives home in the same day.
Don't miss Amalfi, it's amazing!
