Someone's relative thought they saw a person with a service cat on board, and some posters are getting all hot about possible allergies to cats.
I'm not an expert on the ADA, or on what service animals are allowed on cruise ships, but I am pretty certain that only service dogs are allowed - however, I lack any authority to say so.
Celle
Cars are not recognized as service animals under the ADA. In my program here in S Miss we do provide cats for those who rather have a cat for a emotional support animals, although its local and not supported under the law. So far the only 2 species that fall under the ADA are Dogs and miniature Horses.
Jocko's right. Only dogs and miniature horses are covered as service animals under the ADA. Emotional support animals can be any kind of animal but I can't imagine the ship would allow an emotional support animal on board.
It's interesting that most of these "animals on board" threads are started by someone who knows someone who thinks they saw something rather than someone with direct experience. Sometimes I think people just like to stir the pot. The "cat" could have been a stuffed animal. There are very realistic ones on the market and I've seen many cases where adults travel with a stuffed animal as a "mascot."

That thread has cited links to some old threads where service cats were allowed on board cruise ships, particularly on Holland America. However, when I looked, those threads were all dated about 2009. There is one thread posted by someone who took a sleep-apnoea-alert Bengal cat on a cruise.
Whatever the situation was back in 2009, I'm pretty sure that no service cat will get on board now.
PS: I'm almost tempted to get a lifelike stuffed animal cat. But I think my two live cats would destroy it!

There was a trend some years ago to try to train Bengal cats as service animals as they seemed to respond well to food lures. Didn't really work out because, well, cats are cats. :)

You are correct. Dogs are the only Service Animals allowed at this time. Who knows if that will change.
There is no such thing as a "Service Cat" and again, "Emotional Support" animals do NOT have public access.
I'm not much of a cat person but I do respect their intelligence and ability to get their needs met!

This was just posted on that thread on the Celebrity board:
"I just came off the Infinity April 25th and yes there was a cat on board.
The first time I saw the cat was in the sail away pictures. The next time was at the Martini Bar socializing with all the ship guests.
This was a 16 year old black cat. So sweet.
The lady that had the cat was telling me it is a service animal for her. It helped to keep her calm.
This cat was the best guest on the ship....truth to be told I love animals more than a lot of people."

It is a lot of "work" to get service animals on board ships. I'm not sure why anyone would want to travel with an animal if it was not necessary. I frequently get "I didn't think about that" when I talk about how we need to think outside the box when we travel with Ollie.

Yeah I just noticed that also, although my car does think its like a service animal with the Patriot Guard and GSD stickers on her and mine and Blitz's names on the doors...... lol Funny thing the spell check will grab misspelled words but not missed words or different words.... Silly Jocko, spell check is for adults....
What we do locally for Veterans with PTSD is we allow them to use their prescription to get a cat out of the shelter. All the same rules apply locally to qualify for the program although there is a release they sign that states this is a local program and does not allow them to take the cat to stores etc. While the ADA does not allow it either with emotional support animals; the local VA Hospital asked if we would bend our rules locally.

Psychiatric Service Dogs have all the public access rights as do Hearing/Seeing/Service dogs. These dogs can mitigate a lot of social psychiatric issues for their person. We have to be careful not to call these extremely important working dogs "emotional support" dogs. One group who have found them invaluable are some of our soldiers returning home from service with PTSD symptomology and more.
I have NEVER seen a cat who effectively did the task as well as a dog or that was certified to do so.
I have a friend who has an autistic child who is kept calm by the presence of a lop-earred rabbit......should this rabbit have the same rights to enter into the public venue, to keep this child calm, as a hearing or seeing eye dog?

I so agree with you. It's so much work to travel with my dog; from thinking about the water, the food, the toileting, the picking up and walking and brushing and protecting from strays to keeping away the fleas/ticks and heartworms, the getting up early to walking in the rain/fog and humidity. The questions, the answers, the gear, hot asphalt, the sandy beach, the tender boats, the floor space on the airplane and, where to potty oh, where to potty? The laws, the rules, the looks, the stares.....Who the heck needs that kind of attention and work????? :(:rolleyes:

I totally agree with your first 2 paragraphs.
However, it's sometimes very hard to know where the line is drawn between psychiatric service and emotional support. Glad I don't have to make that decision!
As for animals other than dogs, the newest ADA seems to have taken care of that.

To watch a person actually climb the walls and flail-out their arms to strike at anything in their "space" who is kept from exhibiting this behavior because they have a highly trained Service Dog who knows exactly where to place itself to mitigate the persons symptoms, allowing this person to go out in public, is very different than a dog who is just "there" to be patted because its presence makes the person feel better. This is a perfect example of the difference between a "Psychiatric Service Dog and an Emotional Support Dog.

I just posted this on the Celebrity board.
A year or two back a woman with a "service cat" was going on a cruise to Mexico. There was a thread about it. Everyone was questioning her and she said it was for some sleep problem, the cat would wake her up or something like that. I'm not sure if it's the same woman, but I would bet on it. As of January 2012, only dogs are now recognized as service animals.
I know all about this woman and alot of people were giving her a hard time about it. I myself was finding it hard to believe. But I think she did go on the cruise at that time. I do not see how she got the cat on now with the new law going into effect. My guess is she booked before the law went into effect and they had to let her bring it.

We will be doing 3 games selling dog cookies this month, plus Johns nephew is graduating from the police academy next week, plus mothers day. Another wedding in June and then MAYBE taking care of a graduate service dog for a month. I guess this little boy is going on a trip across the country and because of his medical needs it will be to much to take the dog and care for him too. We are going to try for a week and if it goes ok, we will prob keep him for the month. He was raised by one of our puppy raisers and is related to Wex somehow. Personally I think we are nuts!! :D

So lets see... this Saturday we will be helping out at the CCI booth at the Abilities Expo. Next Saturday we will have a CCI booth at the Toms River Food Festival. Then Orson has to have a small cyst removed from his back. :( Then we may be trying our hands at becoming starter puppy raisers. We may be raising a CCI pup for the first few months for a puppy raiser who has a problem with the early raising. In between our daughter is graduating college with her associates degree. Orson already has his Tux. Then maybe the CCI graduate workshop in early June. Then maybe Kayak For A Cause in CT. in late July if CCI gets chosen as one of the charities again. Then the Red Bank street fair in Sept. Plus who knows what else will be thrown in the mix.

OK I can officially let everyone know what has been going on behind the scenes in South Mississippi. As many know I am involved in a program called SAV and the main push of this program is to provide support to PTSD Veterans coming back from the war zones. I have decided to part ways with SAV after receiving a few phones calls. Well here is the Official release sent to the Department of Veterans Affairs Biloxi Regional Hospital. With the addition of these two ladies it gives more creditability to this program. Also I have asked all parties involved and it was approved today that the program can be named in honor of my former German Shepherd King. Once I have secured the name and the 501C approval I will release the entire name. I am so excited about these changes.
I would like to update you about changes to the assistance/support dog program here at the Regional Hospital in Biloxi. I am very excited about these changes and think they will allow the program to better serve veterans in Biloxi and the surrounding area. After careful consideration, I have decided not to work with SAV in Las Vegas, but rather to develop a new program here under a nonprofit that I am now working to establish. I believe this will better allow me to implement the kinds of policies, procedures, and tracking systems necessary for the program’s success and sustainability. I made this decision after conversations with Lisa Lunghofer, Ph.D., a consultant in the areas of program development and evaluation, and Sherry Woodard, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) who is an Animal Behavior Consultant for Best Friends Animal Society. Both of these women are well known in their respective fields and have committed to help this program and the nonprofit get off the ground.
I think you will agree that they have the credentials to make this program a success. I am confident that with their help this program will benefit the patients at your facility.

Hi Everyone, it's so good to hear that DisneyKidsDad is staying busy helping CCI, and Cindy, Wexy and John are so busy with social and CCI stuff too. Quam and Nancy sound well and I'm so glad to see you both checking in. Hey, we're a lot more than just our cruises.....although, life definitely would not be as sweet without them.
Sunshine, you can take a breath now!
Guitarist, what you're doing is fantastic....good luck!
It's always good to hear where those darn "potty areas" are too....they're so important to our dogs comfort. Thanks DisneyKD.
I wish I was on a cruise. I've been so busy [it's primacy time in the the fund raising arena] but I knew I had to check in with you guys to see how you all were doing. And, it seems I have no time at work, these days! :(
I have a new Campaign Director, here at work and you'll never guess the question he asked me yesterday. We have a golf tournament next wednesday at a local country club and his question was, "are you going to bring Horton and is it okay with the club?" It took all my strength not to punch his lights out!!!! First, I told him that Brenda had worked the golf tournament with me for the past 9 years and although it was Horton's first tournament, I have every intention of bringing him with me. Boy, is he going to learn quickly who I am and what my Service Dog does for and with me. He's been observing us every day......
You can see that the questions and the ignorance never stops for us, who have a Service Dog.
Do you guys remember me telling you about a Service Dog who was in training, at CCI, when I was there for Team Training this past December? Her name was "Roz." Well, Roz graduated last week with a little boy with cerebral palsy and his family is so excited to have her in their little boys life. I can just hear his parents giving her commands, "sit Roz", "stay Roz", and on and on! So neat to have a dog with such an unusual name, especially when it's yours. :p

May 4th, 2012, 03:12 PM
Oh! Wait! Did I say "unusual name"......CCI is best for giving their dogs the weirdest names!!! I now know that you may change your dogs name, as long as it stays the same within the confines of CCI.
I think I would have changed Brenda's name if I had known then what I know now. But, "Horton" I wouldn't change it for the world. I love to watch people's faces when I say his name.....it's so darn goofy, it fits him perfectly, unless I start using the name "Goofy", which is even more perfect!!! :D ;)

I would love to take credit for this but its due to the breeder and my daughter. The breeder for having done me a favor and to allow me to purchase a high quality dog that takes to training unlike any I have ever had. My Daughter did the stack training in under 30 minutes, she is all about showing and agility. Blitz is all about helping me and assisting me daily yet he does get fantastic training from all of us.
I have not read any book about show dogs; although I am actually taking training up a few notches. I am one of the luckiest guys in the US right now with Sherry W (Dogtown fame) and a few others wanting to be involved in the "King's Second Chance" training program for quality dogs who might otherwise be given a big sleep. I am two years into the program by myself and it exploded approx 2 months ago to a national program or a based program to be used for other sites. We are still doing baby steps yet with everything I have done and now with others the pot is stirred quite a bit and it smells fantastic.

Hi all!
I have been here but I guess I just haven't had mu h to say. We are getting ready for a short cruise to the Bahamas. David likes to scuba and Valentine and I like to read in the sunshine. We have most of the packing done but next week starts the push with Valentine's vet visit and grooming. I have let her go a little long between beauty appointments and I have been telling her that she looks like a ragamuffin. oh you should see the evil look she gives me. Impersonally think she is told too much how cute she is. Loo. We decided to go out of Norfolk on a shorter cruise because although the vet says she is in great shape I worry about the long flights to Europe. Iwill probably be retiring her in the next year and it will break my heart. But for now we willcruise without a flight and enjoy every minute.

Sandy has started on her allergy shots. Cooler continues to thrive with her new best friend and Mackey is coming home for a few days. Rich and I are excited for our cruise in September.
Yey!!!! I'm so glad to hear that all went well and you're planning a cruise for September. Congratulation to all of you.

What a gorgeous boy Jocko! How does Blitz know how to "stack" like a show dog? Speaking of which, has anyone read "Show Dog" by Josh Dean? Very interesting look inside that dog culture.

I thought Brenda's retiring would "break my heart" too! It was difficult to go through the process but now that Horton's part of our family we're filled with smiles and joy when we watch the two of them play and kiss on each other.
Brenda is enjoying her time to rest during the day and hopefully it will prolong her life, in the long run!!!

I am taking my dog on Royal Carribean. She is a service dog. The cruise line has a rule that dogs cannot be left unattended in the room? How do they know when service dogs are trained and quiet. Also, RC is different than Carnival. They want me to have all paperwork which is fine but there is a rule:
(b) The animal must be accompanied by a valid certificate which substantiates
that it has been vaccinated against rabies within not less than one (1) month and
not more than ten (10) months prior to importation for the one (1) year vaccine.
For the three (3) year vaccine it must be within no less than one (1) month and
not more than thirty-four (34) months prior to importation into The Bahamas.
My dog always gets a one year on schedule but just got her rabies last Fri and we leave RC on May 21 for the Bahammas. then we need a health certification no more than 48 hours old.
So, I have a RC question and Bahamas question.

Princess wanted me to have Brenda [my retired Service Dog] vaccinated within the same guidelines as above.....I refused to over vaccinate her and had my Vet write a descriptive letter about the dangers of doing this and that Brenda was protected as was all other dogs and humans who come in contact with her. I would do the same with my 3 year old Service Dog as well. I vaccinate when necessary and not because a cruiseline/port/airline, etc., "pushes" me to over-vaccinate.
If a particular port refuses you entry without a more recent vaccine than you know is needed and you don't have paperwork from your Vet insisting that your dog is protected, this port may be missed or have someone stay onboard and dog sit.
I'm never crazy about leaving my dog alone in the cabin. Even your "privacy" sign may not be enough to keep the steward out and you wouldn't want the door to be left open and the chance of your dog wandering away.
I always make friends with the crew [who are missing their pets so much] and they love to spend time with my dog partner.

Roz: We are doing. Trav is fitting in at his school. Still struggling with the work. I just think it is something we will have to deal with. Jezzy is getting better and getting socialized with people and other dogs. I am very proud of her. However, yesterday she was in the golf cart with Papa and some fool had his dog off its leash. It came over to the cart and Jezzy went balistic. Papa had ahold of her but for some reason she wasn't having anything to do with the other dog and she ended up biting papa on the arm. Not trying to bite him but she was so excited about getting to the dog, his arm was in the way. Very small puncture wound, he cleaned it immediately and doused it with perioxide. All well today. She is curled up on the end of the couch, next to me right now. Leann Emily is in hog heaven. She loves laying in the front windshield of the motorhome. She can see everything.

OK Gang more news on the home front of Jocko and his helping Veterans. Last update I mentioned a few people and organizations that are helping me yet really could not say allot about it. What I can say now is Blitz and I are going to Utah in July (est) to Best Friends main office to go through a dog handler course to make me not only more effective a handler it will also assist me in getting Blitz better trained to help me. I have decided to name the organization after a former best friend who is currently waiting for me at the Rainbow bridge; the new name is King's Second Chance. The motto is "Because everyone needs a second chance". Again it will pare up shelter dogs who meet specific qualities with Veterans and other needing assistance of those dogs.
Please let me know how you feel about this.... Thanks

Poor thing, she's so insecure and fearful she didn't mean to bite her beloved PaPa. Isn't that sad for her? With your love and kindness she may one day learn that she doesn't need to react in this way.
Many, many years ago we had a small dog who loved to sit in the window of our motorcoach. He thought he was our lookout!

When they contacted me I was like Who? No really who are you again; lol. Then I quickly did a search on a name given and Dogtown came up and I was like, OMG.......... Really are you kidding me; in my situation its the best thing that could have happened to this program. With their involvement alone it give King's Second Chance and huge shot in the arm with loads of professional respect. It took me two years to get to the place where I received those two phone calls; and right after those initial calls its been like a tornado in a trailer park. So much activity and honestly it has given me a resource that I can call and question them about their training programs and why something is done a certain way. I have had server books published by Best Friend sent to me in electronic files. I actually had a question for Sherry W about a chapter in one of their books on the topic of aggressive food behavior or guarding food. So I have been handling it a different way all my life showing my dog's who is alpha by removing the food from them. The way they suggest to do it was totally different and I asked Sherry why they do it her way; she replied later today and now it makes sense. Their method is so different from Caesar.
Its been a very long time since I have been this excited about anything and to grasp the situation as it happened; they contacted me since they heard about me. Its amazing for sure since something like this on this level has never happened to me before. All things considered; this was the best thing that could have happened to me and the program; and I am so blessed that it is approved by the VA and I just need to clean house a little more, and continue to find a few still motivated people in this area to lend a hand. Being able to go out to Utah and meet with Sherry one on one and all of her other staff members is beyond my wildest dreams. I also realize that the difficult work is just a few weeks out and that's when its going to take excitement and swap it out with stressful work enviroment of a Fortune 500 company.

Thank you.......Happy Mother's Day to you and everyone.
I spent mine with my son and his family. He gave me a card that had me fill-up with tears. It really spoke to our relationship and was so moving and meaningful. I have two daughters whom I adore but my relationship with my son is truly special. He's a wonderful man and an amazing father to watch with his own children.
One day I'll share my story with my son. I'll just tell you a bit; he came into our lives at the age of 4 years. He was abused and abandoned...he is now a successful adult; graduated from USC with a double master's and runs his own solar energy company, working with Bill Clinton and the Calif. Legislature in saving our environment. He's quite a guy.

There's a thread on the Carnival boards about someone using a dog for "sleep apnea." They say the dog barks continuously until the person wakes up and that the person takes the dog [small poodle-type dog] into the buffet area where she swipes her finger into a cake and lets the dog lick the icing off her finger.
They talk about why is the dog being taken into these areas when it's obviously not working and being utilized there? Very interesting.
This is similar to the woman who was carrying around what she said was her husband's seizure alert dog. The dog wasn't near her husband and seemed to make the woman feel better more than it did any kind of "alerting!"
I wish the public would "STOP" abusing Service Dog accessability laws.
I, personally, am going to call folks "out" if I think they're being abusive and hurting my rights to continue to cruise and have access as needed.

I saw that thread too and can't quite figure out how a service animal can help with sleep apnea. Leo has it and his sleep study found he stopped breathing more than 20 times per hour--how could any animal alert that many times per hour for eight hours every night? And even if they do alert you, what good does that do? The point of treatment for sleep apnea is to stop the episodes (thorough use of a C-PAP or other breathing machine), not to wake you up when the episodes happen.

The visual of this little dog going over to the person and "yip-yapping" his little heart out, whilest the neighbors, who are being subjected to the noise are ready to pull their hair out, is not very funny!!!!!!!
I don't understand either how helpful this dog is for this apnea sufferer.

I don't know if I just got lucky or it's pretty common for the retiring dog and the "Successor" to become good friends. But my girl and boy really like each other.
Brenda and Horton are so cute together. It's not as if they'll sleep together [Brenda won't sleep with anyone], she's pretty independent about her couch and Horton is very respectful of not treading on it. They just love to see each other at the end of the day and in the morning they greet each other with pure joy.
Brenda was never one to interact with other dogs much and, they would keep their distance from her.....I guess it's the pack mentality. They know when someone can or cannot be pushed. Horton lumbers his way around her with his huge body and tail.......she just sits back and watches him do the "Horty Hussle!" He'll prance/dance/leap and lope around until he runs out of steam and then he'll head for his bed and just stare at everyone. Such a charachter! :p
Horton will go straight into my bed at the end of the day and wait for me......I love it. He got what I wanted from the get-go!
Life is good with Horty and Brenny. Brenny will celebrate her 12th birthday next month and I pray that she's with us for many more. :)

Nancy, it's a pure and honest stubborn streak. CCI recommended that I keep his leash on him so that I can control when he literally goes to the very back of his crate and rolls-up like a pill bug and I look like a moron trying to get him to come out. CCI wants me to give him a "correction" when he refuses and I'm such a "softie" about it.
Horton still has some "quirks" about himself but as he's becoming more and more assured that he's not going to another foster home and that he's here to stay, he's letting go of some of his insecurities.
I remember when Brenda was brand new and for the first year she would "test" me occasionally to see if I really was the leader.
I much prefer the least-path-of-resistance, it's so much easier....but, not necessarily with dogs.

I'm sorry Roz, I literally laughed out loud at that visual! Yes, I get that with Jezzy Lou, that it is my fault, that she is a spoiled brat, etc. I can buy some of it, but her separation anxiety is for real and not my doing. I don't want to bore you with all the details...so, I'll let you lead the way! ;)
I have a degenerative eye problem and am blind in one eye and. the other is going more slowly. I am glad to hear the cruise lines are open to service dogs. I love dogs anyway and someday will have my own service dog but still getting around without. I have some personal questions for you which you don't have to answer. You told us what she can do and she sounds amazing, But 1) what do you need her help with, 2) how hard is it to get a service dog, 3) how long would it take train one to your needs - say blind once she has been trained and given to me.
I am learning braille because I love to read. I'm 64 and I hope an old dog can learn a new trick. I would never try to go solo on a cruise once my eyesight is gone but know I could bring along my second set of eyes too would be comforting.

Grandma, welcome! Oh! My! When I looked at the quote that you had posted from me, it made me smile. It was written long before "Brenda" had finished her 15th cruise. She is now retired and I walk with "Horton." Horton had his first cruise in March and will be on his second in October.
Both Brenda and Horton were Puppyraised and formerly trained through Canine Companions for Independence in Sacramento/Oceanside/North Carolina/Florida, and Santa Rosa, Calif. Most trained Service Dogs have quite an illustrious past before they go through Team Training [a two week, intensive training program, with the person they will finally live and work for.] The dogs are around 2 or 2 1/2 years old when they graduate.
CCI does NOT train dogs for the seeing impaired. CCI trains Service Dogs [assist adults with physical disabilities]; Hearing Dogs; Facility Dogs [who work with a professional in a visitation, education or healthcare setting]; Skilled Companions [this dog works with children and adults with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities], and dogs who work with our Soldiers returning from battle. I fit into one of the above categories.
Please don't hesitate to start looking into getting your fur-partner ASAP. There is always a "Waiting-List." And, the difference that my dogs have made in mine and my familes lives can never be measured in just words.

Hi All!!!! I have missed all of you! Wexler has had some medical issues and I really haven't felt like talking about it. That said, we think he is going to be fine. He was having some leaking problems and at first the vet just thought an infection. When we brought a sample down, we found out no infection but he had dilute urine which could be a sign of kidney problems. John just blew it off (his way of dealing with it), but I've been a wreck. After umptine (my own word) urine tests and a kidney panel, and monitoring his water intake for a few days they found nothing wrong. Our vet consulted an internist and they both agreed that his prob might be from his marathon drinking sessions. He drinks a whole bowl before school and doesn't drink til supper when he drinks another bowl and another bowl later in the evening after is treat. We thought it might be incontinence, but I guess it is so very rare in male dogs and even more rare in a young dog, so they don't think it's that. They said if it is some kind of kidney problem that the tests aren't showing, that the kidneys are compensating terrifically and not to worry about it. He had a leaking problem when we first brought him home from CCI but they said that was submissive urination and it would go away when he got comfortable in his new home, which it did. He has always had to go out alot, he could never hold it to long. So now they think he might just have a small bladder. We have one more sample today with no water since this morning, so when John comes home I will get the sample and bring it to the vet. It could be that he has always had dilute urine and we never knew cuz he never gave a sample before. His level is somewhere between normal and bad but more toward the normal end. I had a big talk with the vet the otherday and she does not seem to be worried about it, so that made we feel better. :D
On another note, the flights came out for our cruise and they were ridiclous! So we cancelled our cruise for January. I found almost the exact cruise in December alot cheaper and cheaper airfare. Actually we ended up getting a beautiful suite for 800 less and Lee is free!!! so we ended up around 1000 less for the cruise and around 225 less for the flight. WoooooHooooo!! This will be the first time we have cruised in Dec.

Cindy, I was getting a bit worried about you guys but I didn't want to make an issue over it.
It sounds like you've got everything under control with Wexy. I hope it resolves itself. Horton is a camel and will hold onto his urine forever......it worries me sometimes and I'm forever waking him up to go outside. I'm pretty new at this "boy" thing.
Please let us know how he's doing and I will keep a positive thought for him in my prayers.
I LOVE December cruises. I love all the decor and just the feeling onboard a cruiseship the closer it is to the holidays, the more the hooplah!!!!
I want to go with you......

Please don't hesitate to start looking into getting your fur-partner ASAP. There is always a "Waiting-List." And, the difference that my dogs have made in mine and my familes lives can never be measured in just words.
I know I need to do that soon. I will be able to get around the house without help for sure, but going out is what scares me. I can still read but I have to use the computer at 200% and look around spots. I so would love a furry friend.

I'm waiting to hear from the vet today. I'm sure Wex will be fine. Thank you for your concern and prayers. Isn't it funny how different each dogs potty habits are. Wex goes out every 2 hours and Horty is a camel, go figure.
When do they decorate the ships? Are we going to finally see all the holiday decorations?
Our friends that we met on our first cruise with Wex just graduated this past weekend with their new service dog! They got a nice little yellow lab. They fell in love with Wex and they waited over 2 years for their dog. We are trying to talk them into going on this cruise, although now we just changed the cruise  I'm going to contact access and compliance today since they are sending us all the HP and dog forms to fill out again. Ugh. I don't see why they can't just use the ones we just sent them for the other cruise.
One other thing, I love your real Horty pic you found! Are these service dogs a bunch of bums? Wexler truely thinks he's king.

We we're onboard the Golden and the Sapphire the first week in December and towards the end of our one week cruises they were putting-up decorations. I love seeing all the festivities. They had a huge gingerbread house with all the fixings in Horizon Court.
When we were cruising, many years ago, onboard a RCCL ship, we stole some of the decorations from one of the lounges to use as a costume for their "Passengers Parade" Show. I went as a Christmas tree. :D;) I got scolded by the Cruise Director as everyone in the audience applauded!
One of my most unfavorite things to do is filling out all the paperwork for our dogs to board a ship. Although, I'm really glad that they're so careful and I hope that this will deter the folks who think it's so easy to bring "Fi-Fi", who makes them feel better when she's around, onboard!!!
When I saw the picture of "Horton Hears a Who" and saw him laying down like that [my Horty doesn't have that tummy though], I thought it looked so much like Horty's attitude, I just had to share it!

As this week end draws to its end; lets not forget what this holiday is actually about. When you fire up the BBQ in the backyard and have friends or family over lets remember this holiday is about those Military Members who have given their lives to protect our freedoms. I have been very lucky; with as many members in my family who were military; including those serving now only one friend has lost his life serving. Donavon was a CH-47 Chinook pilot and it took a RPG round in the front of the bird instantly killing him; this was during Desert Storm.

Wow small school only one graduate...... lol
I can help with the picture if you want to email it to me or it could be thats the size the camera took it as.
My daughter has one more class and she will be done with this degree anyways. She will be getting her major in Criminal Justice and minor in French although at the very end they realized she needed a few more hours to graduate so she left for Paris last night to study one month abroad. I still say its a way to have a month long vacation at her scholarship expense yet she says its a real study program and her school agrees..... In less than 4 weeks she will return from France as a graduate.
In later July maybe early August Blitz and I are going to Utah to spend a few weeks with Best Friends and work on our training skills and abilities so we can move our program ahead with the VA. Officially the VA has given the green light to provide trained (basic commands and abilities for a C9GC dog) to those veterans with PTSD. The additional training I will be receiving is to assist me with more specific training on dogs so they can tell if their handler is going to have a bad day and how to help their handler.
Tonight I am doing another ride along with local PD; I do hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday for those in the US who post here.....

Awww! Time goes by so quickly. I know how much you loved Bailey and Rangeley.
The picture is Brenda staring at a ball in the backyard - She was so obsessed by tennis balls that she wouldn't take her eyes off of it until I picked it up and threw it for her. Now that she's older she doesn't seem to care that much, unless Horty is playing with one, then suddenly, she cares!

I'm getting so "yancy" waiting for our upcoming cruise in October. Waiting through the hot, valley weather for our ocean voyage seems like forever.
Horton is becoming more and more responsive. He still walks around my office with his leash attached [to remind him that he's semi-tethered], it's hard to run away with a thick/long leash attached to you. He's more willing to come when he's called and to pick up his leash when asked. :)
He's not giving any refusal's and ignoring me like he used to do and actually looks for me when he comes out of his crate.
I love this dog, he's so, so sweet with a really endearing personality.

I'm so happy that Horty is working out for you. I can see he is getting more and more comfortable with you every day. You are getting some wicked heat out there! Yuck! We have only had a few hot days so far. We have another game tonight to sell dog cookies. Wex is home with me today so he can sleep all day. He needs his naps so he will be good for the game, otherwise he will drive us nuts all night. I think this will probably be our last one. It will be to hot for the dog (and me) during the summer. We also can't wait for our cruise. We already have our flight and I'm so excited to be staying in this awesome suite on the ship. It will be very strange for us going in December, but I think we can handle it ;)

Cindy, I think you're going to love cruising in December. The weather is so nice in the Caribbean & South America that time of year [you're not fighting the humidity as much.] And, the decorations onboard are so much fun.

Okay, for all you who lurk but don't write in and even those of you who have written in.....this is your golden opportunity to give us your thoughts or opinions on what you think when you see a perfectly healthy looking woman walking [obviously] not blind, with a Service Dog, onboard a cruise ship.
Is your first thought; how'd she get her pet onboard the ship? - She must be training the dog; I wonder if I can ask her some questions - Most importantly - WHERE DOES THE DOG GO TO THE BATHROOM?
And, are you shocked when you find out what my dog does for me and how amazing and brilliantly smart she/he is? :)

Barbara, exactly my point. When we were onboard the Sapphire this past March and there was a husband and wife with a "yippy/yappy" Shi-zsu who sat on the husbands lap but walked around and was held by the woman mostly, it sure got my curiosity up. So, I asked, especially after the dog tried to bite off Horton's nose.
The woman's explanation was that the dog alerted her husband when his blood pressure became dangerously low and he should sit down immediately. And, the reason it "yipped and growled" at Horton was because it had been attacked by a large dog once.
I suggested that she try and get it to manage it's aggressive behavior or it wouldn't be able to focus on "alerting" very well!
The woman was certainly nice enough and we became friendly during the week and she went on to explain to me that she suffers from agoraphobia(sp) and panic attacks......whoops! Me thinks she spoke too much. The dog was a "make me feel good dog" and should NEVER have been allowed on the ship. I knew this from the moment I met the dog and her. And, observed that the husband interacted with the dog very little!!!!! She had a vest for the dog and I'm sure got her doctor to write a letter....etc., etc.
You and Valentine are a team and I know she would never mis-behave or growel at another dog for no reason. So rude!

The thing is Roz, you don't need a doctors note!! The only forms we filled out was Special requirements form for John and the form with the dog info on it. Like what kind of dog, size, weight, that sort of thing. And HAL also asks for a letter saying what the dog does for John. Everything a regular person can fill out (and easily lie about) for sneaking a dog on a ship. They never ask for any real proof. On the HAL boards there is a big discussion about dogs, cuz so many people are complaining about these dogs running around the ship, swimming in pools and eating off tables, which we all know a real service dog would not be allowed to do. It's really getting out of hand!!!

I can,t imagine dogs in pools dogs eating from plates it,s unimaginable! THEY HAVE TO BE PETS! Pets are a very good thing and can make a person feel loved s are and secure, but, theybelong at home. The funny thing is whenwe started cruising with Valentine both Royal, and Carnival required her deploma! The need to resume that! Also a service dog would never snap at another dog I did see a seeing eye dog growel once when somone was severly istracting him from his person but only enough to alert the person. Thats another thing. Why does every person on that ship feel the need or the right to stop you no matter how fast and direct you are walking. I,ll bet ,those people with pets enjoy this because what they must be looking for is attention. What better way than a dog who most people love and had to leave home
It would be nice if they could hand out a pamphlet about what to do when meeting a service dog. Or something like that. On one T/A cruise we did the cd made an anouncement that she was onboard and not to pet her. That little anouncement made a Big difference. It really doesn,t take a lot to hep so much.

I always tell folks who are cruising with their SD to give themselves a lot of time to go anywhere because they will be stopped and asked so many questions. Honestly, I don't mind answering the questions for people who are truly concerned and interested in the Service Dog as a worker in the public venue.
When Sunshine and I cruised together she handled all the questions and made so many new friends because she was helpful and informative about the Service Dog and all that they can do.
When I hear about the people who allow their dogs to swim in the pool or eat off the plates or tables it makes me so angry. I would allow Brenda to sit on a couch next to me for alerting purposes or to keep her from getting trampled. She was the most respectful and wonderful dog to take into the public. Horton is very big so it's a bit more difficult to hide him under a table and when he's lying down he takes up a lot of space.
I still have to protect his paws from being stepped on and that tail.......it seems like it's everyhwere. I've heard him yelp twice since I've had him and it's so sad to hear....it literally brings tears to my eyes and anger to my lips when people step on him. :( I know folks are not expecting to have a dog laying around where most dogs don't go and a black dog can meld into the floor so easily. Which is why I really think that a retractable "caution flag" should be made and used when were out in public. Has anyone heard of such a thing....I'll buy one. ;)

Hello!!!! I'm still here and taking care of my service dogs in training...just haven't had much time to post lately. I do have some special doggy stories to share when I get a chance. I enjoyed being Roz and Brenny's spokesperson on the cruise. I did come up with varied answers to the potty question...I can see how it would be very tiresome after awhile when you are on vacation always having to stop and speak.
Since I work with dogs in training, I am used to this and it is part of my training to advocate and teach the public about these dogs.
Off to do some yard work...Mr Sunshine is now on supplementa oxygen and it has been a learning curve for us. I'm off to visit the threads that discuss cruising and airtravel with oxygen...

They looked into the "Read To The Dog" program at the local libraries. My wife got a call the other day from a woman that runs the program. She was pretty sure they were not going to be able to use Orson because he was a "Service Dog" and didn't have the training a "Therapy Dog" has. They also wanted to know if we had a seperate insurance policy on him that specifically covered him around children. Needless to say my wife said never mind and hung up.

She's going to feel like such a "dummy" when she realizes the difference between a "Therapy Dog" [gently mannered knock-off of a pet] and a Service Dog [2 years of being socialized and puppy-raised and then months of intense professional training.] "Insurance to be around children".......Oh! I've got to take more meds......she's making me crazy!!!!!!

Roz,
This was about the fourth go round about them trying to volunteer for the program. Everything you just said was explained four times, at least. Somehow they got it into their heads that it has to be a therapy dog. So for now it's their loss.

Josh (second dog from the right) and his human, canine and equine partners held their annual "Capitol K9" fundraiser a couple weeks ago. They take over the whole Capitol grounds and invite all dogs to participate in challenges, a doggie parade and lots of other fun stuff! The money raised goes to paying some of the costs of the K9 program so that taxpayer money can be used for other things.

Wonderful! Leave it to "dog people" to raise their own money so as not to be a burden on anyone else.

OK...here's my story for today. Being that my daughter is off from college for the summer, her and my wife were looking for stuff to do for the summer.
Sadly I know this is too true. I have recently run into a brick wall at the VA after being approved locally at the Biloxi Regional Hospital they have somehow confused Blitz as a Therapy dog also. These different organisations have even gotten more money hungry and started trying to control specfic territories (Delta Society and the others) by locking in specfic hospitals and not letting other TD in that facility. Even the AKC now offers its own Certification for TD after 50 hrs of service to patients.
So back to our story I told the VA thank you but this is not what Blitz is nor is this what my program is about. I don't know how it effects dogs to be subjected to those who are hospital bound and or in a hospice situation. I would suspect it would weigh heavenly on the dog since it knows these people are going to pass or at least those in my area; I would suspect it would have negative results with Blitz or any dog seeing those too sick to leave the hospital and when they do its after they pass.
I do agree its their loss and a fine example of that local person trying to lock in their territory.

Are you guys watching the new dog trainer show on CBS [channel 2] called "Dogs In The City?" Starring a younger version of Caeser Milan [The Dog Whisperer.]
It's very good and he's fun to watch as he works with the folks who have pet dog issues. He's very gentle although I've yet to see him work with a really "red-zone" kind of dog problem but I like what I see so far.

Happy Weekend dear friends.
I'm so busy packing my office to move to our "city" office for three months while they finish building our new office here in the suburbs. It's going to be a drive to work each day. But, I'll get to play with the "big boys" in the glass ceiling for a while. And, Horton will be so excited to work in a huge office building in the middle of the financial district in L.A. I have to put my "professional" hat on for a while.

OK guys and gals--
Roz's first post in this thread is dated July 6, 2007 which means four weeks from today our little community will celebrate its Fifth Anniversary! We've had 7,000-plus posts, 310,000 views (WOW!) and more than 100 participants. We've welcomed new friends, new pets and new working dogs and we've had to say "goodbye" to more animal and human family members than we'd like. We've shared our sucesses, our frustrations, silly costumes and pet tricks and everything in between. Oh yeah--and we took some cruises here and there :)
So a celebration seems to be in order--anyone have any ideas?

I have had 2 dogs and 2 cats pass away in these past 5 years, and all your kind words, thoughts and prayers have gotten me through it.
Lastly, ROZ! What can I say, you started this whole thing. You are the best friend I have never met! We have been through alot. You always seem to know just what to say to make me feel better. I have seen you help out every single person on this thread. I hope our paths cross one day so I can give you a big hug and say thanks for everything. Love you, you crazy lady!!!! :D

I am a newbie to the world of service dogs. My Lucy is a Diabetic Alert dog. She has been invaluable to me. She also picks up things for me, alerts me to timers going off (I have difficulty hearing high pitched sounds) and only barks when someone touches my door.
She is a Poodle/chihuahua mix and only weighs 9 lbs. Most dogs used for this are labs, but she showed the tendency very early, so was trained. People are so surprised when she doesn't bark at them, their dogs, children or other animals. I guess they expect all small dogs to be "yappy!" When I go out, she rides in the basket of my scooter. http://inlinethumb02.webshots.com/45313/2854403710067077547S425x425Q85.jpgI have also had many people question my need of her since I look "normal." I have an alphabet soup of diagnosis and I try to educate rather than castigate when people question me. It does get old though!
I probably will not take her on my cruise in Sept. because my sister will be with me and can help me if needed.

Piper, welcome. Lucy is a cutie. It's so nice that she can fit right in your scooter basket, so convenient! I'm sure the questions you get are very similar to the one's I get. Having someone with you who can serve as your "question deflector", like Sunshine did for me, makes travel so much easier.
I don't mind answering questions and I always allow for "patting." I totally understand the curiosity factor and the repect that most folks have for the "Working Dog" and, that people are missing their pets at home. But, there is a time when I just want to go back to the cabin or find a quiet lounge to just hide in or find some quiet time.
Enjoy your upcoming cruise. How does Lucy do when your apart for extended periods and who does she stay with?

I have to agree with Cindy. I don't know what we would have done if I didn't have the information from here about cruising with a service dog. If I had to guess I think we would not have gone on a cruise. As far as sad news goes, we lost our 12 year old Yellow Lab (Magic) the day after Memorial Day at 4:00 AM. Even now it's not easy to type this. There will never be another dog (service dog or not) that will ever come close to her. But to help ease the pain, if all goes as planned, we will be picking up an 8 week old puppy from CCI this Thursday morning to puppy raise. His name is Ocho II. He was the 8th puppy born of the "O" litter. It should be interesting. Luckily, we have alot of friends that are "seasoned" puppy raisers and some that are newbies like us. We have already had the pleasure of meeting Cindy, John & Wexler and I hope we get to meet more of you fine folks.

I have been lurking around this wonderful forum since we booked our cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas in April.
Roz, you and the other members have created a valuable resource for the rest of us. The information here was so complete that we didn’t need to post any questions.
We have just returned from our June 3rd. Eastern Caribbean Cruise with “Saki” my Wife’s 7 pound Yorkshire Terrier Service Dog. This was Saki’s first cruise and we didn’t know what to expect from him. He was wonderful.
I thought that it might be helpful to let you know how things went on FOS.
We took your advice and had all of our “dogs” in a row. Told RCI we would be traveling with a service animal 30 days before sailing. They sent us a Service animal form to sign and return. Had several copies of the USDA form (endorsed just before cruising), the Rabies vaccination form and his City license. We called again 7 days before departure and confirmed that they we prepared.
At Port Canaveral we presented ourselves at the Special Services Desk. Turned our paperwork for Saki in, had our pictures taken and our Sea Pass(es) were Issued. They had pre-applied dog footprints on each card.
We were then escorted to the Ship and the pursers desk where one of the representatives asked us if we would like to be taken to see the dog relief area. Wow what service. The mulch box was on deck 4 aft in a crew area our cabin was on deck 7 forward. This wasn’t a problem for us as my wife is fully mobile, we just scheduled our potty breaks around mealtime as the Dining rooms are aft as well.
We hadn’t planned to get off the ship at “Coco Cay” RCI’s private island as we had been told that we needed a pet import permit for the Bahamas that needed to be obtained 48 hours before departure. Imagine our surprise when the cabin phone rang early that morning Guest Services telling us that “saki” had been cleared to visit. As we placed our Seapass in the security checkpoint special chimes went off alerting the immigration officer that the dog had been cleared.
The same thing happened at our other two port of call St. Thomas and St. Martin. Looks like RCI’s Freedom has got it right.
we got all of the questions that you indicated we would get. How did you get him on, where does he go potty, etc. What does he do? Towards the end of the cruise it got a little old and we made up some answers “We put him in our luggage and he was delivered to our room”. He goes to the bathroom on the Poop deck of course.
The crew were great they all missed their pets at home and asked if they could pet Saki. We set up an informal petting time just before dinner and that worked well.
Saki was amazing. He didn’t care for the mulch (he prefers grass) but after a little coaxing with treats he got the idea.
All in all it was a great experience and we wouldn’t have tried it without the knowledge we gained from this fourm.
Keep up the good work and thank you again.

I have found that cruising is so much fun with my Service Dogs because once all the Vet/paperwork is done and we've visited the groomers the rest is easy. It's now my vacation of choice!
RCCL really deserves "kudo's" for the way they handled you and Saki. Of course, again, you made it easy for them and they appreciated it by serving Saki well!
And, "poop deck" why didn't I think of that? ;) :D
Thank you so much for coming on and sharing your great experience with all of us.

Thank you for your kind words Roz. We still catch ourselves expecting Magic to walk down the hallway or scratch at the back door to come in. Orson and our 7 year old Yorkie (Chaos) took a day or two to try and figure thing out. Orson tried to become the new "alpha" dog for a couple of days. Any time someone would come to the front door, he would bark and not let them in. We showed him the error of his ways and now everything is back to normal.
Ever since we became involved with CCI and became friends with some puppy raisers (Cindy knows who I mean), we have wanted to try puppy raising. Since my daughter is off from college for the summer and my wife is her aide, it seemed like the perfect time to give it a try. We'll see how it goes.

Oh! Nancy, I'm so sorry for your friend. This is a very sad week for our friends and their adoring, furpartners.
My dear friend Marion is visiting from Seattle and her Vet called to let her know that her 15 year old Husky, "Snowball", is suffering with kidney failure.......she's so afraid that she'll lose him before she gets back home. Her husband just passed away last year [very suddenly] and Snowball was wonderful company for her. Her home will be very empty for a while. She says she's going to go to the shelter and bring home a new buddy to love.

I saw the post over on the Royal Caribbean board and have been lurking for a few days reading about all the 'kids' ;)
My one and only 'child' has 4 legs and fur - a Chocolate lab Hershey. She was the 'runt' of her litter because she had a super tiny (like 20 hairs) patch of white on her breastbone and wasn't able to be a show dog. I brought her home at 6 weeks, 8 lbs 11oz of brown fluff, had her housetrained in 6 days, knows so many commands its scary and still doesn't know at the age of 12 1/2 that she's a D - O - G... Her eyesight is going and has the typical lumps & bumps of an ole girl but she still does the head tilt and the wiggle bum when I get home from work. I think she would have made a great SD (any place without water... can't get her out when she gets in... would NEVER be able to cruise with her... she'd be bounding over the edge of the ship and doing laps on the pool deck :p )
I have read through a lot of this thread and have shed a few tears reading about the pure unconditional love all of your kids have for you as well as you for them.
I hope that others come over and lurk as I "thought" I knew a fair bit about service dogs but in reality I didn't know that much. I knew the basics of "don't talk/touch/pet/lure" a dog with the vest/harness but honestly I always thought they were pretty much always working. After reading about the goofball antics of the lanky Horty and Wexy, seeing the playful pics/videos I see that they're working dogs that still live a dogs life.
I have seen a few dogs on cruises and have been amazed that people don't have the common sense to leave them alone when they're working... on the other hand i've also seen a few yappy little (as I call them) 'cat dogs' being lugged around in purses and the like and can't believe they get away with it. It isn't fair to the poor untrained dogs to put them in a situation like that - they always look so stressed. I know *I* would LOVE to take Hersh away with me (and heck save the mega bucks the 'spa' charges... it cost more for her to go to the 'spa' than it did for my last cruise!!) even though she LOVES attention and people to put her in the masses with 3-5000 people would be just cruel.
Thank you all for enlightening me :D

Beth, welcome, what an amazingly wonderful girl, your Hershey is. I love her face both as a puppy and as a "grand-ole-girl!" I know all about those "lumps & bumps" from my Brenny who is going to be 12 on June 20th. I love the gray on Hershey's muzzle......amazing how fast it creeps-up on them. Way too fast for me!!!!!
I can't bear it when my DH talks about Brenny not being in our lives when I retire from work, 5 years from now......I can't even imagine my life without her in it! Darn, I can't even write about it without starting to well-up!
No dog is more "water-obsessed" than Brenda and she did really well on the cruises. She would walk over to the rails and watch the ocean and the birds and she loved sitting by the pool [you could just see it in her face that she knew it would be wrong to jump in, although she would have loved it and I know a lot of folks would have enjoyed the show!]
I would roll her ball on the Promenade Deck and she would run after it and sometimes it would roll into the gutter, alongside the edge and a few times I did get a bit nervous watching her but she ALWAYS stepped very gingerly to the edge, lowering her body and poking her nose under the railing to retrieve her ball.....amazing. Folks laying on the deck chairs, watching in delight, always yelled, "more, more!" In all her cruising, I only lost one ball over the brink. I'm afraid Horton would just bound over the railing and dive right into the water! He's much more of a "risk-taker" than she ever was!
To me, there is no more beautiful sight than a well trained Service Dog in the public venue. They're so polite, majestic, respectful and a joy to be around.
Please come back and tell us more about your adventures with Hershey. I truly enjoyed your writing.

The first summer she was with me we went to the park (about 5-6mos old) and unbeknownst to me dogs weren't allowed on one side of the park. We get caught & scolded by the park police and proceeded to the other side. Brilliant me decides then to try her off lead... as an aside - her father was a retriever to the core - prize winning hunting stock... it's hereditary I guess. She see's a squirrel and takes off (to which i'm thinking oh sh** and bellowing Hershey COME) Said squirrel starts up a tree... (I think whew that was close) Hersh makes one gigantic leap... I say a final COME and she turns around with the squirrel by the tail in her mouth as proud as proud could be at her catch... at this moment I hear the park patrol truck thinking her we go again... first we're on the wrong side of the park and now my dogs hunting the wildlife. She comes right in front of me, sits with this wiggly squirrel in her mouth and drops it at my feet...
I get her back on the lead (don't need anymore captures today) we head down to the big lake in the park... I take her off about 100 ft from the water because if I don't i'm going to be dragged through the gravel. I used the chuck-it to get some distance on the ball and in she goes and brings it back... repeat this about 1/2 a dozen times and then she just gets the ball and keeps swimming... and swimming... in a straight line... wouldn't come back for anything so I start running the perimeter of the lake (luckily it's round with only one water 'exit') and eventually she gets within catching distance... by this point i'm soooo mad but laughing my butt off at this nut I head into the water to intercept her and drag her out. She was worse than a 3 yr old not wanting to stop playing!
The following morning since she wasn't used to swimming on the Olympic team she couldn't even wag her tail... her poor rudder was broken :p
Needless to say for the rest of that summer she was on one of those super long training leads when we went swimming in the lake!
She was a CRAZY puppy luckily never destroying anything but definitely one of the 'hey look at me, hey play with me, hey see me' types... VERY high maintenance until her 2nd birthday. Literally the morning of her 2nd birthday we went for her walk before I went to work, threw the ball around etc etc and by the time I came home that day she was the most chilled out relaxed dog I almost didn't recognize her. It was like someone told her while I was away that "today you're a big girl... act like it" It was an amazing, well received and slightly freakish transformation in 8 hours!

DKD--I'm so sorry to hear of Magic's passing. Even though we understand that our fur babies aren't going to be with us forever, it's still so hard to lose their undying love. Good luck tomorrow as you begin your adventure with Ocho II!

Beth, what a fun diary of "Hershey's Happenings", she's such a super dog. Such a character! She really has filled your life with joy! And, now ours! ;)
In all the years that I've been with CCI I have NEVER seen a Chocolate Lab. I was told that there are some working out there, just not so many here in my area.
Again, thanks for sharing your great stories, I love them! :)

Marcntyme, Eden and Saki.
Welcome to our little world!! We are so glad things went well for your service dog. This site is amazing, I have learned so much here and it has made it easier to travel with our SD.

What a wonderful dog and friend you have. Just a note about those small dogs that you have seen on the ships. I have a small 10 pound dog who alerts me to medical problems and has saved me many times. She has been on 15 cruises. So far. You will see her riding in the basket of my scooter or in something that looks like a rollerboard suitcase but made for dogs. While most s service dogs are the wonderful labs as is your dog, there are many many small foo foo (as I call them) who also work very hard every day.
I absolutely loved your stories especially the squirl. I Can just see his proud little face and your embarrassed one.

Yep! Our Valentine is small but she's a mighty little girl. She's luckier than our dogs who are "dragged" around - from here to there and back again. She gets to ride!

Cindy, how's Wexy's "leaking" problem?
It's been very warm [unusually so] around here. Neither Brenda or Horton care much for the heat [they're both just like me!] Morey loves it warm. Horty's so tired and mopey acting this morning.....I had to really coax him off the bed and he didn't want to eat breakfast [this is very unusual] Uh! Oh! I told him to "shape-up" - No sick dogs allowed around here!!!!!! I'm going to keep my eyes on him.......You should have seen Miss Piggy [Brenda] going for his food when he just walked away from it [at least I know there's nothing wrong with the food!]
Any suggestions or opinions are welcome!

Wexy is still leaking, we are trying to take him out often. This morning he ate and then drank the whole bowl of water, atleast 3 cups or more. No wonder he leaks!! The vet doesn't seem to be to worried about it. They don't want to believe it could be incontinence because he is young and a male. I guess it is really rare, but the key word is "rare" not unheard of. I guess at some point (when John decides) we will do an ultrasound on him to check some things. I have been told it's around 300 buckaroos!!
Horty refused to eat????? WOW I would keep an eye on him. A lab refusing to eat, thats unusual. If he refuses dinner, I would call the vet.
Wexy hates the heat!!! He does not do good when it's hot. He just wants to lay under the a/c. We never keep him out to long when its really hot.
John has only 2 days left of school, I guess my vacation is over.:( I have been battling a SEVERE heartburn attack for over a week. Bad enough I had to go to the doctors. I am now on 2 medications and the "pressure" feeling is finally starting to subside. This is the worst one I have ever had. Usually a few over the counter pills clear it up, but not this time. The doctor asked me if I have been stressed. Stressed??? I live with a quadriplegic and a sick service dog!! You want to see stress!! UGH And now they will both be home all day every day! I hope I make it through the summer. Oh and in a few weeks we will be sitting for another service dog, for a week but might keep him the month if all goes well. He is related to Wexy somehow, either same mother of father. I'll have to find out.

It seems all CCI dogs have that 6 degrees of separation from being related in one way or another.
UPDATE: I took HORTY out and he had a huge poop! Sorry for the TMI! I then brought him in and introduced his food again and he "woofed" it down. Can you believe it, he was constipated!!!!! Geeezzz, who knew!!!! I'm so glad he seems to be feeling better. Now he's sleeping. He's a heavy sleeper and CCI Trainers warned me about this. That he needs a lot of encouragement and motivation [sometimes] to just "get going! Then again, don't we all sometimes!!!! :p
Cindy, I wish we were closer....I'd come right over, pick you up and we'd go for a foo-foo, fun something or other! The men are going to be invading your surroundings and space soon.....prepare yourself! I'm with you girl, hang in there! ;)
Cindy, maybe it's your gall bladder that's bothering you....I hate that feeling...go get some ginger ale-sip slowly. No spicey food/no aspirin without lining your stomach first, no eating right before bed and only decaf coffee [I'm your personal physician.] I like Tagamet [over the counter], it really helps the heartburn.
Feel good.

I'd be willing to hazard a guess that even though you have a foo foo dog you don't hold it in your arms while giving it samples at the buffet on a cruise and letting it constantly bark the whole week... I'm thinking that one wasn't a SD lol
Sounds like a gall bladder attack to me too... I get them if I eat too much rich food... I find the quickest way to relieve it is to chug a can of ginger ale and then let the gas free ;)
Hersh is an atypical lab... I currently have an open 44lb bag of dog food sitting in my kitchen... She'd starve before putting her nose in there?!?! Now the T R E A T box... Different story ;)

That's it Beth, we're associate physicians.......We better be careful, we'll have a mal-practice suit on our hands!!! :(
I've heard about Labs who can be "free-fed" but I've NEVER owned one!!! Brenda will eat everything like a vaccum cleaner and more. Horton is a slow, methodical eater but he usually always finishes it. If he were a person he'd be the one who makes sure that nothing touches and he'd examine and sniff everything first.

All of my labs were pigs. My chocolate, Rebel, was the worst. Not only did I have to get a trashcan with a lid but I had to put a weight on top. He was unbelieveable. And as soon as we would take him off the leash to run, he would take off. UGH he was awful, but I loved him to death! :D
Miss B was so good. She was a piggy girl. She would eat anything, like my rug, couch, table..... Labs gotta love them!
Our last service dog, Rangeley, was a picky eater. Every couple months we would have to change food cuz he would refuse to eat it! And he had to have something added, like spaghetti sauce or cheese. Sometimes he would eat the cheese and leave all the food. It was amazing how he could just pick out the cheese.
Wex, just a pig and a wacko. He actually grunts like a pig, very loudly. I have never seen a dog that makes as many noises as him. And he never barks. We have never had a normal SD. Our pet dogs have been pretty much just ....Dogs But there's something about the SD like they know they are different than other dogs. Wierd.

Before I got Hersh I was debating a Lab and a Golden... Decided on the Lab because of the short hair and less mess... Well we all know how the tumbleweed situation is in ALL our houses :(
Then after she was home I would read horror stories online about labs demolishing furniture, woodwork, decks etc... I was terrified... The only things she ever chewed as a puppy was a little of the edge of a footstool (well she was laying on the sofa with her head hanging off and it ~was~ right there) and the button on the emergency brake handle in my car... ummm both my cars... BOTH times I only ran into the store for milk! Luckily when I traded the dealer had 2 bloodhounds that ate ALL his window sills off in the house one day while he was at work so he had some compassion and let it slide... Needless to say the car got traded in for a SUV with a dog gate!

Beth you are right Valentine would never be fed in public and the only time she barks is if someone might step on her. Talk about instincts, all you have to do is act like it MIGHT happen. She also has a feeding habit. At exactly 4 pm if I am not cooking she will come to where I am sit in front of me and stare and moan. And she wont quit till she is fed. Then she smells it and walks away.
Cindy, I too am worried about your heartburn. I havn't heard of heartburn lasting that long. The pain from gallbladder comes when the stones get lodged in the bile ducts. Be sure to keep an eye on it cause it could be stress or something worse. We want to keep you around for a long time!!

Brenda's puppyraiser's told me they had to replace the siding on their garage because she had pulled it off as a pup......Oh! No! Thank goodness by the time we got her she was a perfect little lady. THANK YOU PUPPYRAISERS! :)
Brenda [the true love of my life] never chewed on ANYTHING [in our home], she's the most respectful dog I've ever known and, she's a pure English Lab. She loves her Virbac Chews, she's obsessed by any and all tennis balls but I could lay her near my favorite knick-knack or a fancy pillow and she wouldn't even lick them.
Tumbleweeds, indeed! We stopped having dinner parties in our home because I found myself always warning people to "blow" out their coffee cups lest they'll find a Lab hair in their drink. The hair is "everywhere!" And, I do mean EVERYWHERE!!!!
Then CCI gave me a huge Lab/Golden cross named "Horton" and my life changed. He has to examine everything....including but not limited to the drawers in the refrigerator, the dirty clothes hamper, the door of the car, every person's crotch [Brenda could never reach them....he reaches everyone's], it's so embarrassing. I went to the Doctor yesterday [Horton was laying down], she took out her stethoscope and Horton jumped up and wanted to examine and sniff it. Nothing gets by him without being sniffed or examined.

John and I figure one day we will cough up the biggest hairball on earth!!!! I guess our systems are good for digesting hair. Wexy is a big sniffer. Wexy is also a crotch sniffer and it drives me nuts! I am curious if Horty sniffs your clothes when you put them on? Wexy does that and we think it's so he could find us during the day. One thing Wexler is obsessed with is plastic bags. We usually keep his cookies in a ziploc bag when we go out, so now any crinkley bag, he comes running.
I am glad to hear about Hortons "poop" situation and glad he is better. I hope he is back to eating.

That is so funny about coughing-up the fur ball......Come-on, furballs in the shower, in my bed, on my pillow, in my hair........best place of all in my underwear!!!!!! Boy! You really gotta love these dogs to put up with their furballs EVERYWHERE in your life.
And, yes, he's so busy sniffing my clothes that he'll walk into something and I have to give him a "correction" to stop........he's obssessed!!!!!
Horty is all better today; he's eating and pooping and being his "gotta-get-in-18 hours of sleep" guy!!!!!!........Thank you to the God who watches over our furparnters!!!!!! And, thank you Cindy for asking.

Yep, fur balls! We had a golden retriever, Jess, for 13 years - my, how she shed! Even after she died, I was still finding her hair in odd places for about 2 years! Now I have 2 cats, one semi long-haired. She sheds so much that I sometimes wonder why she isn't bald!
Goldens and labs have a prolonged adolescence. They tend to settle down once they are about 2 years old, but can be high-maintenance for those first years.
Our Jess was a pig for food (a stomach on four legs!) and would try to steal or beg, if allowed. But she was a very willing dog and we were able to train her not to eat anything unless we gave her the "OK". Then she'd scarf it down.
We always gave Jess a biscuit in the evening, when we fed the cats before putting them to bed for the night. One evening, I forgot to give her the "OK" and went away to do something else. When I came back, Jess was still sitting, looking at her biscuit, which had a big ring of drool all around it! :D
Bless her, she had waited at least 10 minutes to be told she could eat her biscuit.
Jess wasn't a service dog, but she was my protector. Although very gentle, she had a loud bark, when necessary. She always put herself between any stranger and me when I took her out, and she slept right beside my side of the bed when my DH was away. No one could have go to me without going past her.

I just wanted to post some info about Valentine. We just had to take her to the vet. She was having a hard time breathing. They xrayed her and said she had an enlarged heart (she always had a big heart), fluid around it and in her lungs. They kept her to treat her but they are hopeful they she can come home tonight. Needless to say Barb (ValentinesMom) isn't doing well right now. Please keep them both in your thoughts.

I'm sorry I haven't been back since I first posted. I have been having some computer issues and was "dogsitting" for a friend last week so couldn't leave to get them fixed. I keep Paco one week a month. He is a service dog, too. His owner works 5 days a month as a hairdresser and doesn't take Paco with her because of the hazards of the shop (and the long hours--she is gone for 12 hours a day.)
Paco's owner lives in the same apartments--just a few doors down. http://inlinethumb17.webshots.com/6160/2155260480067077547S500x500Q85.jpgLucy really looks forward to having Paco to play with--we take them to the dog park at our apartments when it is cooler in the evenings to play because they are so good together. When Paco is here, they share a bed, eat out of the same dish, share toys, etc. I even noticed that Paco would get a mouthfull of food--drop it on the floor and share with Lucy!
I am praying for all the pups with health problems. I hope they're quickly resolved.

The yellow & white pups really show the green, you don't see it so much on the black pups. When you visit CCI you can always tell when it's tatoo day....all the little yellow/white puppies are running around with their floppy, green ears.
I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to teach the pup anything, I'd be so busy cuddling him/her all day.

Horton was Puppyraised in North Carolina, sent to Florida and then shipped to Santa Rosa, CA. Talk about covering a lot of territory. He had been in so many states and with so many different people, I'm sure it didn't help with his insecurities.
When we take a road trip and I finally open the car door he's a bit relunctant to get out. I have to coax him to give-up his seat. I'm sure he's thinking "now where are they taking me?" It took Brenda a full year to really be comfortable and give-up her fears and distrust.
So, you never know what or where your puppy will finally wind-up. I think CCI looked at Horton's size and just naturally assumed he would become a wheelchair puller kind of guy. Boy, did he fool them.
Have fun with your new, little boy. Just think one day he'll be graduating with a new person. Amazing!!!! You're creating a miracle for someone else!

Will Santa Rosa ever give-up being the main training facility for Hearing Dogs?
CCI Oceanside is ALWAYS reminding us that we should get our re-certification's through them [because we live in Southern Calif.] but, I just love Santa Rosa so much, it's like going home!
We finally got a Dorm [in Oceanside] reserved for our re-cert in December [do you believe it, it's time to start planning for Horton's re-cert already.] We were never able to get a Dorm room there because they were always full! At last we've been confirmed in Dorm Room #1.......The hotels down in Oceanside and it's environ's are so expensive. It's located right in the middle of the most popular tourist destinations in So. Calif. Really lovely. But, it doesn't matter I'll always have a "soft-spot" in my heart for Santa Rosa.

First of all...I know that puppy is cute, but give Disney Dad some sympathy. He is suffereing from "PFS" or puppy fatigue syndrome! Since I have not suffered such syndrom for about 9 months I can tell him that this too will pass.....
Having some rough days lately. Rich and I are adjusting to life with oxygen and an overall slowing down. Still looking forward to our cruise in September with all those sea days!!!! I went up for some puppy therapy today and worked with two "doodles".s So cute...one a pup and our outing was to walmart...The other a mature adult dog of 14 months....first time out with him and what a charmer. Another walmart outing and then a relaxing lunch. I even got to read a book during lunch since my companion slept under the table and no one in the restaurant knew he was there.
Have Mackey home. He is doing great in his training. On another note ....Cooler has torn her ACL...she is recovering from her surgery and I am sending her all my cyber love....

Sunshine, quite an adjustment that you and Rich are going through. My very best wishes to both of you. Can he fly with his oxygen? If so, how's it done. We have a gal in our office who's DH has just had a bout with congestive heart failure and he's now using oxygen but is afraid he'll NEVER be able to fly again.
Poor Cooler.....that's got to be very painful for dogs. Poor puppy!

We are done cruising for the foreseeable future, so our Oct cruise is canceled. Our problem now is that she doesn't want to eat. She is down about 2 lb from before she started having problems. She eats a little but not much, and you can't bribe her. We will keep you updated in the future. Thanks for all your caring.

It's all a matter of what you can do. Flying with oxygen is not a problem. You just need to obtain a portable oxygen concentrater that meets FAA standards. Also needed are enough batteries for 150% of your flight time. Our insurance actually covers this.
Mackey is being a love right now. The fun part of puppy raising is when you can let them just be a dog. Mackey loves to snuggle up to whoever is sitting on the floor.

Cari, we had a regular cabin [with veranda.] They put the potty box on the veranda and there was a couch in the cabin [which was perfect for Brenda to sleep on.]
I actually liked the Splendor a lot and wouldn't hesitate to go on her again.
There is definitely room in this the cabin for a crate.
I know that Princess no longer allows the pottybox to be put on the Veranda and I believe HAL has stopped that as well. But, since I prefer the stairwell to anyplace else, that's not a problem for me!
Tell us about your Successor. How's handsome Denver doing?

Hi all. Catching up on a lot of posts. Things have been really busy since my kids got out of school 3 weeks ago.
I'm wondering if any of you watched the new TLC show called "On The Fly". We watched because we saw camera crews at BWI several months ago. We are watching for ourselves in background shots. Last week there was a guy who was traveling (I think it was from Baltimore) to Denver with a service dog who was training. The dog was not officially "certified" as a service dog as its training was going to be completed in Denver. The airline was giving him a hard time about flying with the dog. The finally did let them on the plane. Since we were watching it from the DVR, I paused it to ask my attorney husband if the could deny them boarding. I didn't think they could. My husband said federal law trumps airline policy.
I also watched After the Catch/Deadliest Catch this afternoon on the DVR. They showed avalance rescue dogs. Pretty cool to watch that too.

I have not seen the show but I love anything about Service/Working Dogs or just dog shows in general.
Dogs **"IN TRAINING" [**key words] do NOT have the same rights as a dog that has completed all it's training. They are NOT protected by Federal Law. And, therefore can be denied public acces into ANYWHERE that the public goes. On a case-by-case basis the public carrier or public business may deny the "dog in training" access, if they choose.

What I meant to say is that a public establishment may ALLOW ACCESS to the Dog In Training, if they choose to but they are not mandated to do so by Federal Law until the dog is fully trained.
All the above information was given to me by IAADP and CCI.

Cari, what's going on with Denver? What's wrong? I hope it's nothing serious, other than "old age!" I know he's around Brenda's age and, on a daily basis, I check her as she sleeps because she's sleeping longer and more deeply.
I'm concerned and although I don't see you often enough, my memories of being with you and Denver run very deep, he's such a handsome and dutiful Service Dog!

I did find out the other day from one of the CCI trainers that only Hearing Dogs are being trained to use an escalator.
I love having the freedom to use an escalator. At first I was really scared but Horton didn't think anything of it and to watch all the dogs during testing go up and down the escalator's with ease was great to watch. To think how restricted my life was with Brenda always having to look for the elevators, when my blind friends were going right up the escalator, it sure didn't make sense to me!!!!

Me either! I wonder how it happened. I'm always afraid when Horton stands too close to the edge......thank goodness I only get faced with this when we're in the mall [I'm too busy saving money for cruising to spend it in the mall] and, when we go to the pier in San Pedro that has an escalator, I always have my "Granny Cart" with me filled with Horton's "stuff" so I can't take advantage of it!
To think of all the Seeing Eye Dogs that use the escalators and I've never heard of any accidents, this one sounds very frightening. Anything can happen......poor dog, he must have been so scared and the owner too! I'd be pretty hysterical myself!

I'm having some pretty extensive dental work done.......I have the worst dental-phobia, dentists make me crazy and I need to be pretty medicated to begin the work.
It was Horton's first time at the dentist with me....I layed him down, with a "down-stay" in the corner [as far away from the instruments and the movement as I could.] The dental assistist was applying some cement with a "gun" looking device......Horton immediately stood-up, came over to me and starting licking my hand. It was so sweet, yet so menacing-looking to the assistant. He asked that I give Horton a direction to lay-down again. My mouth was filled with gauze and I'm sure I didn't sound like me. Horton immediately went back to his spot and layed down. Obviously, he doesn't sleep or even close his eyes......he's intent on watching me! Very interesting, huh!
I have to have more work done on July 6th, I think I'll leave Horton at home with Brenda & Morey because that visit looks like it's going to be pretty extensive too.

Barbara & David, my deepest sympathies, I hope that you are both sustained by the memories & good times that you shared with your beautiful little girl.
We all loved Valentine and I'll miss the fabulous stories about her adventures.
She was a wonderful little worker and fulfilled her job like a true little pro. She surely has a front row seat in heaven. Our dear, beloved fur-partners just don't live the long lives that we wished they could......but that's because they don't need to.....they fulfill us and do what they need to do with a purity of soul and heart.
Rest-in-peace dear little Valentine you were a friend to all of us.

First, I love the picture of your Beagle. We had a Beagle when my kids were little and he was such a wonderful boy. We called him "Big-Tough-Guy" or "Guy" for short.
When I was going through the training process, with Horton on escalator's, it was up to me to begin the assent and up to me to descend properly; always being mindful of the END of the process [where the stairs disappear into the floor.] I had to leave enough room between a person in front of me so I could start decending by walking each step and then a short hop off! This would also "que" the dog to "hop" off! Avoiding the chance of a paw or fur getting caught.
This poor little dog had absolutely had no training as to how to get off quickly. So sad, he suffered so unecessarily!!!!!

Thanks! The bigger dog is my Katrina-rescue foxhound I got when volunteering at a Mississippi shelter after the storm. She was an unbelievably mangy puppy and they were going to put her down but I said I would take her. I thought she was a beagle and then she somehow became a foxhound! :)
The puppy is a beagle who came to the shelter where I was working; he had a leg deformity. The minute I put him on the floor to watch him walk the foxhound started gnawing gently on his head. She's actually resting her head on the base of an IV pole in the picture! They've been inseparable ever since (5 1/2 years).

Most hotel-type places don't allow animals to be left unattended in the rooms in case housekeeping/room steward or a maintenance person needs to enter. They are not going to risk their employees' safety no matter how well-trained you say your dog is. (Sadly, some service dogs have bitten others.) If the dog is your service dog, the dog isn't likely going to be left unattended in your room anyway, as you need him to help you.
The paperwork is for the countries you will be going to (including coming back to the U.S.). No country accepts such a new rabies vaccination. Some only accept rabies done within one year while others also accept it done within three years. Vaccinations are not immediate; the body takes time to build up the immunity to the disease. This is why rabies titer tests (blood tests to make sure the vaccination is valid) cannot be done less than a month after the vaccination. Since your cruise has already passed, I'd be interested in knowing if the Bahamas decided to accept you for the short time you'd be there or not.
Next time, though, you need to follow the regulations each country sets forth, especially if you go on a cruise to the Eastern or Southern Caribbean, where several countries have strict rules. Some countries just don't accept dogs on cruises period, such as Jamaica and Barbados.
Yes, the Bahamas requires an import permit (free for service dogs) and health certificate (does not need to be endorsed by your area USDA office, but needs to be from a USDA-certified vet).
I am VERY concerned for your dog's health, though, since you are vaccinating him FAR TOO OFTEN!!! This can make him sick and shorten his life! Please do not do this! Sadly, law requires us to vaccinate with rabies every three years, so you have to do it that often, but do not do it every year! The one-year and three-year vaccines are the same exact vaccines with different labels on the vials. You do not have to vaccinate the other things, like Distemper, every year, either. I do titers on those every year and they still show as well above the accepted level when she has not been vaccinated with those in I think seven years. I titer every year so I have proof for international travel, since I travel internationally at least once a year, but if you don't need the proof, you don't need to titer every year.

At Port Canaveral we presented ourselves at the Special Services Desk. Turned our paperwork for Saki in, had our pictures taken and our Sea Pass(es) were Issued. They had pre-applied dog footprints on each card.
That's cute about the dog pawprints on the sea passes! I went on Royal Caribbean back in 2008 and they didn't have those then. It makes me want to go on them again just for the card, LOL!! Well, that wouldn't be the only reason, of course, and I do want to go on Oasis or Allure someday. My next cruise will likely be the same one I did in 2011, but won't be until 2014.
You misunderstood the information for the Bahamas, but I'm glad they let you off the ship anyway. The import permit (which is free for service dogs) is valid for one year (but only for one entry, so you can't use it on multiple trips during that year). It is the health certificate that needs to be no more than 48 hours old (for cruises, countries give leeway on this for obvious reasons, so you usually just need it done within 48 hours of your leaving for the cruise).
That's interesting about the different chime about the dog being cleared, as I've not heard that on my cruises. Something new? I didn't cruise this year.
Sounds like you had a wonderful trip! :D

If it is incontinence, try giving him fennel seed (you can get it at some Whole Foods stores via the fill-your-own-bag-of-spices thing) with each meal. It can help tighten up the muscles ... at least in female dogs, but hopefully males, too.
I'd stop him from drinking that much at once, as that can lead to bloat. Accomplish this by offering only a little water at a time several times throughout the day. He shouldn't need the amount of water that he is currently drinking (unless something is really wrong - has he always done this?).
I have been battling a SEVERE heartburn attack for over a week. Bad enough I had to go to the doctors.
Have you tried taking omeprezole on a daily basis as a preventive? It used to be a prescription, but is now available over the counter. I have a family member with acid reflux and his doctor put him on that and it is the only thing that has ever worked for him (I don't count having to pop a bunch of Pepcid every day as working). I hope you are feeling better now!

They could deny him, as the law does not cover trainers or dogs in training. Remember, the law is for people with disabilities, not the dogs. That was nice of the airline to let him on, but it was his/the training program's fault for not asking the airline if he could fly with the dog in the cabin. Only people with disabilities can bring fully-trained service dogs in the cabin, plus people with mental disabilities can (with a doctor's letter) bring emotional support animals in the cabin (people with psychiatric service dogs also need said letter). So, had the man been the person with the disability and had the dog been fully trained, the airline would not have been allowed to refuse them on the flight. (I'm thinking the dog probably was fully trained [fully-trained and certified are not the same thing; a service dog is required by law to be fully trained, but certification is not required] and the guy was bringing it to the disabled person for team training - perhaps the person was unable to fly to the trainer/program.)

For airlines that is true, but for businesses it may or may not be true. See, some states have state laws that give access to service dogs in training. So, in those states, dogs fitting the state's definition of a service dog in training (some states allow all of them, some only allow those from particular programs) must be allowed in businesses. In states without such state laws, they are allowed to refuse service dogs in training - but never fully-trained service dogs accompanying their disabled human, of course! (Fully-trained service dogs cannot go somewhere with a non-disabled person or a disabled person who does not need the tasks that dog is trained to do. Access is given to the person, not the dog.)

So, I obviously decided to pop on in here today. ;) I'm glad to see that Horton is working well for Roz and getting along well with Brenda. Sorry to see some of you struggling with different things with their family and/or their dogs, though. I wish you all the best!
Things are pretty crazy here, too, and I'll mention one of the things since it has to do with service dogs, since service dogs are for our disabilities. Well, for at least seventeen years, I have had a certain diagnosis that was one of my disabilities. Long story short, I was recently diagnosed with what I now believe is the correct diagnosis (I had never heard of this diagnosis before). I am now on meds and use a medical device to treat it and they are both helping - I haven't felt this well in forever, if ever! (I progressively got worse over the last seventeen or more years - probably over my whole lifetime really.) I still have my other disabilities and still need my service dog, but thankfully I am not as sick as I had been, especially since it got pretty bad just before my actual diagnosis. Thankfully, I was able to amazingly get a quick appointment at a top hospital with their best neurologist for my diagnosis, so was able to get on the meds not too long after my condition got worse (though I was already using the medical device and that was helping a good amount). This should mean that I won't be having to miss as many events and things anymore!
As for cruises, I am thinking of doing the same Southern Caribbean on Carnival out of Puerto Rico one that I did in 2011, but that wouldn't be until 2014. I was looking for something closer, like this year or early next year, but didn't find anything I wanted to do that my friends would be able to afford (like Hawaii or like Alaska out of California). When I do plan it, I'll make sure at least one other friend will be going, but will also open it up to any and all of my friends who want to come, so I hope a good number of them will be able to come, especially if I start planning it over a year in advance.
All right, I need to get off the board now. Take care, everyone! I'll come back to visit again at some point, LOL!

I'm having some insomnia....don't mind it on the weekends so much...I get up at 7:00am, feed the dogs and then go right back to bed with Horton [who loves to sleep in in the mornings anyway], perfect for me! We close the bedroom door and cacoon ourselves until at least 11:00am. Great for the weekends, not so good for the work days!!!
Quam, it's so good to hear from you with all your great information and insights. Thanks for your good wishes for Horton and Brenda. They're great buds and really like each other. It's so cute to watch them greet each other at the end of our work day!!!!! It's a Laurel & Hardy routine!!
I'm glad to hear that you doing good now. Stay well and keep those cruising aspirations in your head.....it's definitely what keeps me going!!!
Please pop-in every once in a while to let us know how your plans are going and to add to our conversations.

Hi,
I just saw on tonight's news that NZ is going to train dogs to alert diabetics to low blood sugar levels.
The first dog to be trained is a German shepherd. He is being taught to detect hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar levels). A lady who is a diabetic is taking part in this training. She supplies clothes that she has been wearing when having a hypoglycaemic episode.
Apparently, there are different substances in the perspiration during a hypoglycaemic episode. The dog is learning (with his super sense of smell) to detect these substances, and he is being taught to then alert the diabetic.
I don't know how many dogs will be trained, or when, but this is a start.

Amazing! I'd love to see this in action. When I demonstrate to people just how Brenda or Horton do their jobs, they're always so impressed. Our dogs are true miracle workers.

We're off for a week of camping in the wilds of Northwest Washington--no running water, no electricity and no computer. So I wanted to pop in to wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July! Will be back on Friday in time to celebrate our board's fifth anniversary!

What is wrong with you woman? Are there no more hotels in Washington? You're going to sweat, get dirty, get bug bitten and have withdrawls with no electronic devices to entertain you.....Oh! Well! I guess someone's got to be our "naturalist"....we've nominated you! Have fun! I think!
Please come back and tell us all about it. Happy "natural" 4th to you and your's.
Yes, we ALL need to write in on the 7th to celebrate our 5th year! Hear from you then! :)

Thanks, Roz!
That's very interesting about the hypoglycemia-alert dogs. People in diabetic ketoacidotic (DKA) states often have a fruity/acetone odor on their breaths, although not everyone can smell it, and the diabetic person is usually showing other signs by then.
I wonder what exactly the dogs smell in the perspiration? Did a few searches and couldn't find anything. Does anyone know?
