Just for fun...

What music do you load in your ipod or what CDs do you bring with you on a cruise?

I bring my ipod loaded with lots of different things... I'll listen to Manilow, Sting, Dixie Chicks, Fleetwood Mac and  disco...just can't help myself.

I do know that at least once, I'll listen to Willie Nelson sing Stardust as I look out over the sea and smile.

I bring my iPod loaded with my entire music library. My musical tastes are rather eclectic.

I listen to classical music (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Brahmas, Handel, Telleman, etc), 60s, 70s, and 80s Rock, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, "trash" disco, club dance, gospel, big band, audiobooks and podcasts.

I especially enjoy the piano music of Beegie Adair.

I have an ipod loaded with approximately 320 cd’s. The music is all classical (Mozart through Copeland) and Broadway show tunes. I also bring a portable ipod player so we can have music in the stateroom without earphones.

Never travel anywhere without my iPod which is loaded with over 8000 songs mostly older stuff (traditional country and 60's) with a few other odds and ends thrown in. The highest % and most played are Randy Travis :) Always a great listen when trying to pass the time on airplanes and in airports. Actually I should probalby go make sure it's charged since I leave in a couple of hours for a business trip!

I need my Zen for the airplane and it's loaded with meditation, world music, classical, folk and hard rock. I rarely listen to it on the ship.

Next trip I plan on being more active so I might use it when walking distance on the Promenade or in the gym.

I have about 19GB of music on my iPod, mostly classical but also some folk music from the 60s--yes I know I'm dating myself--some jazz and even a little bit of new age and rock. But about the only time I listen to the iPod while on the cruise is when I'm walking laps on the Lower Promenade Deck as there's just too much going on the rest of the time.

P.S. I also love Manilows new remakes of the classics!!

My regular Ipod (20G) has my entire music collection on it, about 2000 songs (all genres--everything from opera to rap). My favorites, though, are the old standards (Tony Bennet, Ella Fitzgerald, and British 60s (earlier rather than later--Gerry & the Pacemakers, The Searchers). I also have about a dozen or so audio books on the Ipod, but when I listen to them I always fall asleep (whereas music keeps me awake).

I also have an Ipod shuffle that is just for walking, and it has rockin' tunes on it to inspire me to get moving--Dire Straits, The Who).

And Van Morrison and Gordon Lightfoot are my favorites of all time.

And a surprisingly (surprising to me, anyway) good version of the song it is, too! :)

Oldies? You folks don't know from oldies. I always bring my Al Jolson music. Don't leave home without it. Also Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, and for the gym---John Phillip Sousa. Now that will get you moving at a good clip! :D
Oh, and just for old time's sake I bring my Perry Grant music.

I've got quite a variety of music on my MP3 player -- lots of country (Toby Keith, Rascal Flatts, Tim, Faith, Alan Jackson, et al), plus some gold old rock & roll (Billy Joel, Journey) and oldies; Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Kenny G, Jimmy Buffett, Andrea Bocelli, Bob Marley ( ); love to listen to Kenny Chesny -- really makes you feel like you're in the Caribbean!

localady: I also really like Manilow's classic remakes, have a few on mine.

fcorey: yes, I have that Bobby Darin classic!!

The best thing about the MP3 player is when you're on the beach -- plug in those ear buds, put on the shades, open a book, and the beach vendors leave you alone! Even if the battery is dead!!:D

Betty,

Thanks John, have to investigate that...Usually walk the deck with DH early morning, but might be tempted to walk again in the afternoon if I had one..LOL

Have a couple of questions?

When I started working in the airline business in my 20's I never wore ear protectors even when we all ate lunch on the observation decks at JFK.. (We were all very stupid then!) If we worked out on the tarmac we would have been required to wear protectors but since we worked inside & only went out during lunches & breaks, no one thought anything of it.. Consequently lost a lot of my hearing in my early 50's (Mom, also lost it so it's partially inherited)...In any event now wearing very tiny in the ear Hearing aids..

Do they have larger head sets to listen to these I-Pod's?...They would have to cover my ears..Sometimes use a single headset with one of my phones at home & it works very well..

Do you use your IPod only for music or can it be used for other things too?..

Also what kind/brand is good for listening to music?..Don't want anything too fancy or expensive..

I'm really dumb about them..;) Thanks..:) Betty

Yikes!!! I hope no one ever mistakes my iPod for theirs, lol!!!

DH & I have TWO distinct iPod colors because if I had to listen to his 27/7, I'd not... well, anyway -

I like a bunch of stuff - most no one here has ever heard of. I do like classical music, lots of contemporary alternative stuff that my kids also listen to - my DH likes "classic rock", lots of Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Rush - but I must say "been there, done that" in the 70's - so I'm over a lot of it.

I DO like a lot of old school stuff that never got a huge amount of air play (and never will) very old Eagles, Jackson Browne, etc. Love some of the obscure stuff from the 80's - The Mission, Jesus/Mary Chain, Echo & the Bunnymen etc. I like a bunch of "different" music - that's for sure.

Right now in my car CD player - Snow Patrol, Keene, Tupac, Martina McBride, The Killers, William Toppley, Deniece Williams.

When we entertain we always play classical music or Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc., depending on the mood.

The concierge on the Oosterdam gave us a bunch of different big band CD's for our party and they were really pretty good, considering.

We try and respect our neighbors and never play anything on the balcony or too loudly - in fact, the only time we play music out loud in the cabin is when we're entertaining.

I have audio books on mine. Like I said, I have about 2000 songs and about ten audio books (some abridged, some not), and I still have about half the memory on it! HAL has audio tours you can download (or use their Ipod from the Explorer's) to tour the art work on each ship.

And then there's the video--both my Ipods are just audio---so far.

I'll try and answer this for you - our teens both have iPods that also play video clips, movies etc. - my DH & I still have the iPod Mini which is no longer manufactured/sold (there are comparable alternatives) but holds PLENTY of music (but only music) for us. Our kids have 80GB iPods and still have room (thankfully) for videos, movies, etc.

For an MP3 player, Apple is the best out there, imo. You can use it with a Windows PC, so no worries there - it's super user friendly - my DH managed to put all his favorite CD's on his iPod with just a little help from our daughter and he is computer illiterate, lol.

You can use most types of newer headphones with newer iPods. It took me a long time to get used to the ear "bud" but my son has larger "over the ear" type headphones too. Our local mall has an Apple store that has everything you need - don't feel bad, it takes a bit of getting used to, but we all take our iPods when we travel - I never thought I'd like it so well, but I do. :)

It's especially relaxing on long flights - I put my iPod on "shuffle" close my eyes and let her go - before you know it, we've arrived.

Another reason to use an I-Pod...As an avid reader, would love to have a few audio books..Can you erase ones you don't want to keep anymore, & replace them with new ones? Audio only is fine, have enough video at home! Don't have or want a laptop & will probably never use the ship's PC's..Only thing would love to have on a ship is a good book & some nice soft music...Thanks..:) Betty

We subscribe to audible.com which downloads "books" to our PDA's and iPods. I bring my PDA which seems to "sync" better for tours - but my kids have the newest iPods and they have no problems - DH & I have the iPod Mini's which are about 2 -3 years old - my Dell PDA is 2 years old but has no problem with audible.com or HAL audio tours...

 ….LOL…Ummmm, Betty I hope you weren’t addressing these questions to me because I am the last one in the world that could answer them:o …lol.

You can ask my Daughter to help you. My experience with her when I asked how can I download my CD’s to my I-Pod was:
She gave me this look and facial expression like… “Are you really that dense?” and then shows/tells me everything I need to know in about 4 seconds. Then I give her a facial expression like “A deer staring into headlights”….lol:rolleyes: .

Looks like there might be a few people here at CC that can help you with answers.
Good luck,

I have two iPods. A 6 gig mini (no longer produced) with a lot of music on it. My favorites are YoYo Ma, Enya, a pianist named Jon Schmidt, and a bunch of classical stuff. I also have myriad 60s-70s stuff and soundtracks. I'm currently listening to "Wicked" and hope to see it soon.

I also usually have an audiobook on it. "1776" by David McClain is my current one. I import audiobooks on CD into iTunes so I can listen to them. Although the ones you buy through audible.com are superior. They remember where you were when you stop while the home-imported ones do not. But Saturday morning will find me at CostCo to get the new Harry Potter on CD. (Audible won't have it.) I have to drive to my sister's house on Sunday and know that if I don't read it or listen to it, someone will spoil it for me!

I also have a shuffle--one of the 'new' matchbook size ones. I wear it when I exercise. It has a very eclectic mix of music. Since I have teenagers, I even have a few songs by All American Rejects and Linkin Park. (Only ones that sound like actual music and have lyrics I understand. Heh.)

I love my iPod nearly as much as my TiVo but not quite as much as my cell phone. I don't know how I lived without it. It's so great to be able to just take a tiny thing like that along and not all the CDs and stuff. I use it every day.

Betty,
My daugther got me started with her ipod. They are amazing! I got a one (30gb) for my birthday. At the moment I have 1100+ songs , music video and a movie, "Queen." (My model will hold around 7000-8000 songs.)
I also just downloaded the HAL tour of Ryndam art so I can walk around the ship and fully appreciate the art!
You can also download any of your photos into your ipod.
You can download games, movies and music from itunes site. ipods contain calenders, muti-time zone clocks, etc--depending on the model
I love setting up different playlists to suit my mood, etc. I have a great workout playlist and recent one I entitled "Sitting on the Deck!"
The sound is incredible. Yes, you can use different types of ear plugs.
I even use it in my classroom. I bought a small external speaker unit, then pug in my ipod. (I teach art and there's always music going as kids sketch, paint, etc.)
I am not a very tech-savvy person, but they are ipods are VERY easy to use!!! Hope this helps.

Betty,

You must get an ipod. Like others, I thought they were only for youngsters. About two years ago I got a 20 gb ipod on Ebay and wish I had gotten it much sooner. I have an extensive music collection, over 600 cd’s, mainly classical. On trips I was always lugging boxes of cd’s along if we were driving and many fewer if we were cruising. Therefore, most of my collection was left at home.

On my 20 gb ipod I have loaded over half of the collection, about 320 cd’s. Now my favorites are truly mobile. Obviously, I could get the entire collection on a 60 gb ipod! I’ve also got a portable i-Home player that the ipod fits into. It has two small but rather good speakers so I can listen to the music without earphones. I can’t make the earbuds that come standard with the ipod stay in my ears. However, I have found inexpensive ($7.95) earbud headphones with hooks that go over the ears like glasses that are just fine. They fit close enough into the ear that airplane engine noise is not a problem.

In addition to audio books and music, you can download free podcasts of various programs from the internet. Also, HAL has podcasts for each of their ships which give a guided tour of the art onboard!:)

I can’t make the earbuds that come standard with the ipod stay in my ears. However, I have found inexpensive ($7.95) earbud headphones with hooks that go over the ears like glasses that are just fine. They fit close enough into the ear that airplane engine noise is not a problem.

I should have mentioned that because my husband's former job required so much traveling, he has a pair of Bose noise-cancelling headphones and always uses them with his iPod on airplanes. (I bribe him to 'borrow' them when we're flying together.)

I believe iPods can take any standard headphones. I ditched the ones that came with the iPod and use a Sony pair that fit in my ears better.

I guess I'm going to get an ipod this weekend. I went to the doctor this week for a five hour procedure and they told me to bring music to listen to and a book. So, am I the only one with only a bulky old tape recorder?

I don't even have a CD player although DH has one of those and an ipod. This week, I'm joining the real world.

I can't wait to load my pictures on there, not to mention my music and some books. Let the good times roll!:D

Not to dampen anyone's enthusiam but to load 320 cd's first to the computer and then to the ipod took the better part of a week (I know, get a life!:D ). Transfering from the computer to the ipod is the easy part, about 2 minutes. Puting each cd on the compter into itunes took about 5 minutes. And you've got to carefully catalogue the music on th ipod.

I bring a CD player and my picks are Pink Floyd, Beach Boys, Bob Seger, ZZ Topp, Eagles, Queen, Heart, Jackson Brown, Janis Joplin, CCR, REO Speedwagon, Connie Francis, Patti Page, Patsy Cline. Those are some of my faves

All Bollywood soundtracks. I'm a huge fan of Indian films.

I splurged and purchased a Sennheiser noise sanceling headset a couple of years ago. Best investment ever. I can barely hear the airplane's engines, children... I use these on the bus everyday. Expensive but worth every dollar.

I don't have an IPod ... but even if I did I wouldn't bring it on our cruise. I love to listen to music in my home from time to time. But I've come to a time in my life when I love the sound of silence.

And more than anything, I love the sound of the sea, the birds, even the rain.

To download photos, music, games, books, movies you will need an ipod with lots of space. I have a 30 gb --which has lots of space and a nice video screen. (7000-8000 songs)
You can download any of your CDs or you can buy songs for 99 cents each on itunes.
You can check out ipods out on line at different electronic stores. Good luck in your quest--I know you'll love it!

I bought a reburbished iPod directly from Apple on their website. It was packaged like brand new, it looked brand new, and it had the same warranty as brand new, but it was less than the brand new price. A good deal for those on a budget, especially since they never go on sale in the retail stores. Free delivery and I had it within a few days.

Eventually I loaded every CD I own onto it - Beatles, Rod Stewart, Neil Diamond, Bobby Darin, Simon & Garfunkel, Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Elton John, Jimmy Buffet, Bob Marley, movie scores and soundtracks, classical piano, Canadian Brass, Aaron Copeland, ballet scores and much much more. And I buy individual songs from iTunes - a single song I hear in a movie, oldies that I once had on vinyl, new releases I sample and like. I find it amazing that I can fit my entire music collection in my pocket - and it is so easy to use.

The real surprise was podcasts. I love them and most are free. Rick Steves' travel podcasts are my favorites. Tried an audio book but had trouble focusing on it for any length of time. Don't think that's for me.

Love, love, love my iPod. Haven't been on a cruise since I got it, but it will go along for sure on every future cruise.

Thanks for the info, Peggy. I ordered mine today and feel like a kid in a candy store. I can't wait to get it. Ordered the 30 GB as you suggested.

It took me about 2 weeks to get my 700+ CDs transferred but I originally expected it to take much longer. I'd take a stack of 40 or so and load them in 1 at a time while I answered work emails (which I generally do for several hours a night anyway). It would eject one when it was done and I'd put the next one in. But I did almost 4 years ago and it won't need to be done again even when I get a newer IPod.

It seems that the subject has morphed from what’s on our music player to which music player we use.
I have an old iPod (Series I), which contained my music, podcasts, radio plays and audio books. A couple of years ago I pared it down to classical music only, older than about 100 years. For DW and me to listen to our music we need two more items: a TV set with audio input and a bottle of sherry. (We carry two different sets of cables). When those two conditions are met, we can listen together – softly, softly. See picture.

Ipods are great for bringing music. For our last Caribbean cruise, we brought Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffet, Jimmy Cliff, Beach Boys and any other music that made us "think island." We also put my son's prayers and Torah portion on his Ipod so he could study for his bar mitzvah. No excuses for not practicing!
