We are on the 9/09/07 msNoordam to Alaska. Do the cooking classes, (paid and free), wine tasting and martini classes fill up fast on the ship? Do we need to reserve the first couple of days on board? Thanks.

WE TOOK ONE OF THE CULINARY CLASSES ON THE OOSTERDAM AND SIGNED UP FOR IT IMMEDIATELY AFTER WE BOARDED THE FIRST DAY. THE CULINARY CLASSES THAT YOU PARTICIPATE IN ARE VERY LIMITED...I THINK THERE WAS ONLY A DOZEN OR LESS PARTICIPANTS IN EACH CLASS.

THE FREE CULINARY DEMONSTRATION I BELIEVE YOU CAN JUST SHOW UP FOR TO WATCH. PEOPLE WERE FREE TO COME IN AND WATCH OUR CLASS IN THE QUEENS LOUNGE.

I AM NOT SURE HOW LIMITED THE MARTINI CLASSES OR WINE TASTING ARE. I WOULD SUGGEST ANY OF THESE SHOULD BE SIGNED UP FOR SOONER THAN LATER!

We have attended wine classes, but are martini classes done the same way? I guess my question is...What are martini classes????

Is there any way we can find out what pay-type cooking classes are offered before we board? Is there a list somewhere on HAL's website or do you just go to the reception desk and ask?

I think the martini thing isn't so much of a class as a demo and tasting of different types of martinis.

The ships offer different cooking classes. I have never seen a list of the classes on HAL's website. Most people just go to the front desk and inguire there.

The Martini classes are usually held in the Crow's Nest on the R and S class ships. You learn how to make a martini of your choice and since you are paying for the class, you get to drink that martini.

Martini classes are held in the Atrium Bar on Main Deck. Last week they were Monday, Friday and Saturday. Just get down there 10 minutes early for a seat at the bar. Bong and Carlos are fun to listen to. Cost is $17.25 per session, IIRC.

Big Al, I just went to HAL's website. Under featured links, click on the culinary arts center. Then click on culinary guest schedule. A list comes up of upcoming guest chefs. Hope the helps.

Hi fcorey!

Sorry I missed your post with this question. We signed up for our culinary class first thing when we boarded thru the Concierge in the Neptune Lounge. If you don't have a Suite offering this service...I believe you have to book it thru the front desk.

Big Al B,
We took the culinary class on our recent Oosterdam Cruise. The HAL website lists certain chef guests on particular cruises. But there is no information ahead of time about what your class will actually be making. I am not sure if they are all the same but its a small group of 12 or less people. They broke us down into groups of 3-4 people and each group worked on a different portion of a meal while the chef supervised....and we all drank wine while cooking! :D We made a salad, entree and dessert- and we sampled it all when we were finished! We got a copy of the recipes and a HAL Culinary Arts Apron to keep. It was fun!

Christine - that culinary class sounds like a lot of fun! How much do they cost?

It was fun! My brother and I took the class together and were charged $58....so I guess it's $29 per person. Pretty reasonable in my opinion!

It's also a nice way to meet a few other people early in the cruise since we did the class on our first day at sea. Thru-out the cruise we would run into people from our class and it gave us something to talk about. I always enjoy social opportunities!

Enjoy your cruise...I am sure you will love it!! I am ready to go again! :)
