Don't forget to register for an absentee ballot! My husband and I just realized we would be in the middle of our cruise during the election. As we are both strongly pulling for one certain person this election is really important to us! But regardless of who your voting for...don't forget to do it...even if you have a vacation planned!

Good reminder! It also holds true if you're away during local/municipal or state elections. Thanks.

:) We already have a reminder on our TO-DO list before we leave on the Statendam in October to send in our absentee ballots.

We had to do the same thing last year.

On the other hand, that might be the best time to go if, like here, the entire county board of supervisors is running unopposed. ZZZZZZZZZ

Thanks for the reminder Jan & Jeremy. We're on the same Maasdam cruise as you. Hope to meet you then.

EXCELLENT advice. While I have my own political POV, nevertheless I believe that everyone who CAN vote SHOULD vote. Period. Otherwise ... you shouldn't get to complain! :D

Indeed, if one is cruising anytime near the election I suggest giving thought to either Voting Early or Absentee ballot. If there happens to be some kind of terrorist attack and you're stuck on a ship in the Caribbean, you might not be able to get back home in time.

We aren't so worried about a terrorist attack, but a couple of weeks ago most of the TV stations around here were talking about maybe changing the date of the elections.

That's why we want to make certain that our absentee ballots are sent in before we leave home.

We have been on cruises on weeks of National Election and were sure to vote by Absentee Ballot before we left.

It was great that the ship played coverage of the election on the tv's at the Casino Bar so anyone who wanted to breeze on by to get an update was able to do so without returning to their cabin to check CNN.

This is one time that I wish the Neptune Lounge would stay open longer in the evening.

...a couple of weeks ago most of the TV stations around here were talking about maybe changing the date of the elections.

The thinking was that if there was some kind of a major terrorist attack that made it difficult for a significant percentage of the electorate to vote on November 2nd, it might be advantageous to the nation to move the election a week or two. While some have objected to this idea, correctly pointing out that we didn't reschedule the elections during WWII, I can think of several scenarios which might occasion a need to reschedule the elections a week or two. What happened on 91101 was horrible, but it could have been much worse ... and if similar, or even worse, were to happen again, is it reasonable to assume that we could hold a national election at the same time? Could we have held a national election on 91201? We could have in Texas (maybe), but New York was paralyzed; and a lot of people would have been barred from voting by being grounded on the opposite side of the country from home, or even outside the country, due to security concerns.

I pray nothing happens. I pray that, if something is tried, that we manage to stop it. I pray for peace, and for joy to all those who are cruising.

Can't speak for other states, but in California you can sign up for permanent absentee ballots, and never have to visit a polling place again.

We took advantage of that law sometime ago, and vote in the comfort of our home, rather than someone's garage or basement, or church hall.

In Massachusetts, in order to vote by absentee ballot, you must be homebound/hospital bound; traveling; in the Military; incapable for one reason or another to get to your assigned voting location. They do not simply hand out absentee ballots because someone doesn't want to go to the local school or church or whereever they are supposed to vote.

Druke,

I have used the absentee ballot numerous times here in GA. Nice law your state has. When it was passed I remember wishing Ga would go to it.

Jan and Jeremy,

Thanks for posting the reminder.

S7S we have exactly the same law in Ohio. Since I became a US citizen I have been adamant at utilizing my right to vote. I have never missed voting in either local, State or National elections. I am inclined to think about people in countries where they have no power in the vote.....jean

Absolutely, Jean.

I always feel as though Americans so under-appreciate our privileges and responsibilities. If a person does not bother to vote, IMO, they lose all right to crab about whoever gets elected. Elections are won and lost on One Vote. Each Vote really does count.

(seems the Democratic National Convention here in Boston right now has been mentioning an election where every vote was crucial)

All the Democrats will be in Florida this year fighting over the elections so we should have peace and quiet on the ships.........

In 2000, we spent the two weeks after the election barging in France, hoping to escape the "what's gona happen next" psuedo-news. Even adding a week in Paris to the boat trip didn't keep us away from all of it. Maybe we'll go for a month this time....

EXCELLENT advice. While I have my own political POV, nevertheless I believe that everyone who CAN vote SHOULD vote. Period. Otherwise ... you shouldn't get to complain! :D This is important. With past confusion on ballot counts, difficulty in obtaining absentee ballots in some states, now is the time to make sure you are registered and have made arrangements for your ballots before departing on summer vacation!
