We are booked in a VC cabin on the Noordam (on the verandah deck) for an Alaskan cruise in August. I noticed that we are quite near the bow of the ship. I have always been mid-ship on previous cruises. Am I going to notice a lot more movement in this area? I personally don't seem to suffer from sea sickness but others I'm traveling with haven't been so lucky.:( Any thoughts? Is it better to take Bonine as a precaution or wait to see how you feel?

We had 8010, both forward and high, on the Westerdam on the Baltic, and we only had enough motion to bother me for a few hours out of 10 days. My wife wasn't bothered at all.

I had some meclizine available but didn't take it. Some people have reported adverse reactions to it, and my philosophy is if you don't need it, don't take it. Others on this forum subscribe to the idea that if you wait until you need it, it's too late. Ask your doctor! :)

I sailed in a VC cabin on the Noordam out of New York Last January. The motion is definitely worse near the bow of the ship. I avoided the Crow's Nest which is at the front of the ship all the way on top where the motion is even more pronounced when the ship was travelling fast. I am prone to sea sickness so I always take at least one bonine a day and when the seas are moderate or more-over 7 feet I generally take 2. That usually does the trick. The sick bay has a big bowl of meclizine (generic bonine) available for free if you find you need more than you brought.

This year I booked a cabin more aft in the ship where the motion is slightly better. If you can change your cabin location that would be a good idea- otherwise don't worry about it too much. The meclizine really does work.

Hi,

there is at least one day, possibly 2, where you have the potential for motion aboard Noordam on this itinerary. I had a group on this schedule a few years ago (and another one sailing 8/12).

While i don't know specifically which motion remedy to recommend, I will advise that you should plan ahead for that particular day (first day at sea out of Seattle, and the morning before entering Glacier Bay where the ship is exposed to swells from the Pacific. Other than those times, I have found it to be a smooth ride.

Granted cabins toward the bow, high in the ship will give more motion than those located in a lower center the vessel.

Have a great cruise. Hopefully you are spending time in Seattle as well.

Thank you for all of your responses. I will plan accordingly and bring the Bonine. I actually live near Seattle so we just have a quick hop over to the ship! (actually we take the ferry over, which will seem so small after we have been on the ship for a week!).
Thanks again
