The VA cabins on the wake would be my chioce, the verandas are larger, partially covered, and the views are the best on the ship. We had SC5190 aft port corner on Westerdam (previously 5186 before refit) and had glaciers in our back yard.
Breakfast on the veranda in the south Caribbean would be spectacular. The VBs are a little shorter (cabin proper) than the VAs but the verandas are the same size.
I'd do the aft VA or VB and pass up the SY if I were you. I love the aft cabins.
You can hear the rumble of the azipods and it lulls you to sleep. We had very little motion back there but it's a looong walk to anywhere but the dining room.

Hi! Again, thanks for the info. I just looked at the deck plan and I'm wondering if the balc. are the same size on deck 4 as on deck 5 (where you had such a lovely cabin). The deck plan describes the distance to the stern from the aft cabins on deck 4 as 9 feet; from deck 5 it is 23 feet. Quite a difference! Is this an accurate portrayl of the actual size of the balc, or just a ship measurement that has nothing to do with the size of the verandah? Anyone know?

Since the refit the dimensions could be different. My cruise book say 9 ft from stern on deck 4 and 17 feet on deck 5. Before refit the ship's aft section was more cantilevered. I think deck 4 remained the same and has more overhead coverage from deck 5 than it did before. When we looked down we saw the uncovered ront part of the deck 4 verandas. There is probably no view of the deck 4 verandas from deck 5 now.
as you stated it is a ship's measurement and not a veranda size.
If you want to see for yourself I'll post a link to the pictures of the cabin and veranda we took in Alaska.

Anybody know how cabin 5065 (VF) on the Westerdam is? We will be staying there for our cruise departing July 30th!

Hi,
VF5065 is starboard side a few cabins aft of the forward elevators. That means that although you are not exactly midship you are not too far from any public area except the formal dining room. It's a rectagular cabin about 254 sq ft with the veranda. It has a bathtub/shower combo. If you need more drawer space look under the foot of the bed and under the couch. The night tables have locking drawers and there is a safe in the closet. Best of all (for me anyway) would be that the bed faces toward the front of the ship so you DON"T get that traveling backward feeling.
Good location and nice cabin. Have a great cruise, we'll be back on her in October to sail back to the US.

Decks 5 through 8 are more covered than 4.
Apparently deck 4 is the deck to be on if you want sun.
Decks 6 - 8 were extended and now have smaller veranda's.
Deck 5 balconies are as large as before, but are now almost totally covered, while deck 4 balconies remain unchanged (as deck 5 was not extended)
Hope this helps!
(this link explains it better than I do!)

I know some people LOVE aft cabins because the balconies are significantly larger than others, but I wouldn't want one. Aft balconies are exposed, meaning anyone on the upper decks can view your balcony. Some people don't mind this, but for me I like privacy and if it rains an enclosed balcony is still usable.

I don't care for aft cabins at all. The wake is not the only view I want to see and we much prefer being mid-ship along the side of the ship.
Just personal preference.

I guess it is personal preference. My last two cruises on the Zuiderdam, I had a midship cabin, but found myself on the Lido deck or Promenade deck just staring at the wake. I figured, what could be nicer than looking out on the wake with my morning coffee, so I booked an aft on my Thanksgiving Westerdam cruise.

After 20+ cruises, with cabins all over the ship, now if we can't get an aft cabin I am extremely disappointed. In my opinion, there is nothing to compare. You get views of both sides of the ship and the sound of the wake is the best "white noise" ever.
There is nothing nicer than the sight of the sea over the wake from the balcony......I have pictures above my desk both at home and at work.

If you want my advise, take a VA on Deck 7. We just got off. I figure if I choose a cabin on the same deck with the PH's, I'm likely to get the most experianced Cabin Stewards. Ours was the best we have ever had.

I don't go for Aft cabins at all (and we have had one before). We loved our forward cabin and picked one for next year as well. I looked over from the Lido deck on the Westerdam and kept thinking if I was missing something and would want an Aft, but I could see all the exposed verandah's below - no privacy.
It was nice and quite in the front of the ship, we rarely saw anyone else but our cabin steward. We could look over our balcony and see straight ahead - we like to see where we are going, especially when docking in the morning. Also, the Captain told us at the Meet & Greet that the retrofit filled in those Aft "spaces" as the capacity has gone up to over 2,200 passengers, so they can make more $$$.

We just booked on the Westerdam. Have never been on HAL so we are looking forward to it. We booked on the Web, VF 4021. Anyone know if we will hear much noise from the theatre below and how large the balcony is? Any other comments appreciated. We got a great deal on the web and are looking forward to our Jan. trip. Thanks

Not all of them are exposed, though some are partially. We book on Deck 8 on the Vistas for the privacy factor.
Afts are my very favorite cabins:).
