View Full Version : Question about Monte Carlo Casinos

I have a question... I read a post by S7S on another thread and asked this question - but I'm not sure if she got a chance to see it, so here goes.

We heard the casinos in Monte Carlo are quite formal and on our upcoming Med cruise, we wanted to get dressed up, DH in his tux and I in an evening gown - would we be over dressed?

Sail mentioned that sneakers were not allowed in the casinos, but I thought all casinos were a bit more formal - jacket & tie for men and evening wear for ladies...

Can anyone help?

Thanks :)

:)

In the evenings the customers do tend to dress up a little more than in the day time. We have ben there both in the evening and day time. In the afternoon we wore slacks.

We did have to show our passports in order to gamble the last time we were there which was about 5 years ago.

We didn't get to Grand Casino (went to American one) but from what we heard tux isn't required but no shorts, bathing suites etc. I also believe there is a charge ($10 Eu per person)

I'm still not sure if we'd be overdressed... do you know if many people go into town to the casinos in the evening? We are there til 11:00pm

I don't think that many will be "dressed" quite as elegantly in the "public" casino areas. I think there may be private areas where the jet setters have private parties or it is admittance for only ......some.

If you wish to dress, why not!!! But I don't think you will find many others have done so.

Have a fabulous time. We loved Monte Carlo....it's great there.

Thanks Sail!

I wasn't sure what to expect - DH thinks it will be right out of James Bond :D , but I had no idea what the dress is really like!

We are getting pretty excited, I didn't think the day would come, but the time is quickly approaching!

I hope to be able to buy some new formal wear thanks to SBD (which I love!), DH won't be thrilled about the cost, but what the heck - that is one of the benefits to losing weight.

Even DH will need new clothes, he tried on a pair of slacks this past weekend for a golf tourney and he was shocked to find they were so loose, they almost fell down!

erkerr......HOW FABULOUS FOR BOTH OF YOU....CONGRATULATIONS!!! I really like SBD and think it an easy "way to live". I'm on maintenance and had no problem at all the whole time we were on Maasdam getting everything I wanted in order to stick to SB. Sure I had some treats; ate some things I don't have at home. But, when I got home and did the dreaded "weigh in".......it was great to have not gained. (I did go to the gym many mornings to "tread the mill". We also walked Promendade alot and certainly walked miles while in port.

I found more veggies than ever before in Lido. One day they were serving primavera pasta and were more than happy to give me a big bowl of sauteed veggies. ...without the pasta or the sauce. They were great!

Your cruise will be here before you know it!

I'm glad to hear about the sauteed veggies, that's a nice bonus! I always found HAL's salad bar to be adequate, nothing over the top - but good enough, and the veggies seemed to be really lacking on some voyages.

Congratulations on not gaining - that is great! I too, walk the treadmill (even at home) and don't usually gain... but it gets harder and harder every year :D It's nice to hear SBD was pretty easy onboard - I'm a little worried about it, we try and stay pretty active on board, but I do love my desserts!

I have a treadmill in my house, as well and try to get on it daily. Five days out of seven is my average. We also walk most nights after dinner....if we're home.

I agree some salad bars on HAL ships have been less than great. I don't know if it is just Maasdam but that ship's salad bar was GREAT. The best we have ever seen on any ship. Hopefully, all of the ships have stepped up what they put out. EVERY day there was loads of cauliflower, broccoli, mushroom, zucchini strips, tomatoes, onions, calamata olives, sprouts, garbanzos, and red leaf lettuce or romaine in addition to iceberg. They also had the mayonaise type salads for those who wanted to add that to their salads. There were at least five or six other bins that had different offerings daily.

I loved that salad bar. Hope yours is as good.

How fun! I hope we will be as lucky! DH is very lucky in casinos - I'm only somewhat - sounds like you did good!

When we were there a few years ago, gentlemen were required to wear a jacket in the evening. The American casino across the street didn`t require this. We had lunch in the Cafe de Paris..next to the American casino and sat three tables away from the 2nd James Bond...Roger Moore. He was sipping a beer and smoking a foot long cigar. He was accompanied by a pretty young thing sipping a cocktail. We couldn`t believe our eyes when we saw him, the waiter told us he`s often there as he has a home nearby.....jean

Ps, for those going to MC, try and make the trip to Eze, a mediaeval town that sits right above Monte.its delightful.....jean

In Monoco, there is a charge to enter the casino. Formal attire is not required during the day, but suit at a minimum during the evening.

You may not enter the l'hotel de Paris unless you appear you belong there...and that means no sneakers, no jeans, no T-shirts, and no cameras hanging from your neck. During the day, if you wear country club causal you usually will not be stopped...but that's the door man's call. During the evening, suit or formal is required. If you sneak in using the side employees entrance [as more than one American has done], you will not be served.

The Cafe de Paris is less stringent, but 'freedom of choice' will not receive a table.

Have a wonderful time

I have always wanted to go to Monaco. I am so jealous *LOL*

Definately on my list of places I have to see. Just from the pictures I have seen of it, It looks so beautiful. I rememeber years ago there was a special on TV and Princess Grace was hosting this tour of Monaco and the palaces, and the casinos, and it just looked like something from a fairy tale.

Have a great time and "break the bank" in Monte Carlo :)

My, my. What an elegant atmosphere that must make. DH and I were recently at the "other" Paris casino (Las Vegas) and observed that most of the crowd was dressed like they were going to the laundromat, even on Saturday night. (Yes, it was 110 degrees out, but for some reason heavy old dungarees were far more in evidence than light flowing comfortable silks.)

Thanks for the information about the South Beach Diet. I just did not recognize it by the initials. DFD1
