usually only when leaving Port Canaveral and upon arrival into a port. Special occassions I guess would account for more, but in the 5 cruises we have been on with DCL it was just leaving Port Canaveral and arriving in each port :)

we had sort of a horn war with a Costa ship leaving St. Thomas. They kept blowing theirs over ours so Capt. Tom just kept going until you could hear it clearly. Lots of yelling and hooting from the Costa ship during and after it.

We were on the Wonder in 2002 and we absolutely loved it that the ship played "when you wish upon a star". They played it quite frequently on our cruise. Always before leaving a port or passing a ship. They also play a little chiming noise thats supposed to be "magic pixie dust" sound before the captain makes his announcements. Its a nice special touch...Disney magic as usual. :)

Yes, the horn was quite interesting. The other thing I want to post is, we were on another cruise ship, and we had docked. It was early a.m., and we had an aft cabin. Well, I got up and flew out onto our balcony, only to be greated by the passengers from the Disney ship, and Goofy painting the front of the ship. The Disney ship was docked immediately behind us. I promptly slipped back into the cabin and put my bathrobe on.

I guess it varies. I heard it quite often on my first cruise, and rarely on my second.
I love it so much, I have my PC rigged at work to play it every time I get an email from Cruise Critic.

We were in Port Everglades in Ft Lauderdale aboard HAL's Zuiderdam immediately following Hurricane Jeanne and saw both the Wonder and the Magic in port as Port Canaveral was still closed. One was tied up along the pier and the other was just entering the port from the channel when dueling "Wish upon a Star" started. The one inbound played it, followed by the one at the pier replying with its own horn. Then it was repeated, and repeated once more. It was to say the least quite a sight (err...sound). I have a picture of them on my other computer to capture the moment as it does not occur very often.

I had the pleasure of pointing out to the Master that the horn on both MAGIC and WONDER does not meet SOLAS recommentations or US federal regulations.
However, since he invited my daughter to press the button to sound the horn while leaving port, I decided not to pursue the issue!

Look carefully up the fore mast. The "real" whistles are up there and are seldom used.

LOL Capt BJ!! A few years back I, too, had the pleasure (and excitement, yes, I am a geek) of sounding the horn with my friend and business partner, Ella2. We would have fought over which one got to do it so the Captain suggested we both do it. :D

Assuming that you have Windows XP:
Open the Control Panel, open Sounds and Audio Devices.
Click the Sounds Tab.
The bottom box shows all of your event sounds. Scroll down to find the mail sound that you want either Windows or AOL usually. When it's highlighted, click the right arrow button below it to make sure that it's the sound that you want. If it is, then browse to your new ship's whistle sound and select it to add it.
Other versions of Windows will be similar. Macs? I have no idea.
Warning: as fun as the whistle sound is, it's gets old after the first 200 plays. I know that from experience.

Michael
When QM2 came out on her maiden from Southampton I was living 50ft from the Solent just outside Cowes on the Isle of Wight. She let rip with her horn as she pulled away from the quayside. I kid you not, the ground I stood on vibrated and I heard her. Just as I used to hear QM when she left Southampton when I was a child.
Its incredibly loud. The horn on QM was always the loudest and it still is now that its on the QM2. Personally I dread to think what it sounds/feels like when aboard the ship when she lets rip with it. I was over 10 miles from her and it literally vibrated everything!!

Thank you SO much for posting the link! My sister and I sailed on the Wonder in January, and the horn was one of the highlights of the trip! When they would announce that the horn was about to go, we ran up on deck in order to hear it more clearly! :D
And I should mention....we are two adults in our late '30s/early 40's who got so excited at the sound of the Disney horn. I just emailed the file to her and I know she will freak out when she hears it.
Now I just have to figure out how to set up my computer so it plays when I get an email. :p

When you check your hotmail acount do you check it through Outlook Express? If not that is the reason I believe. If you do and it doesn't work, I'm stumped.
One other thing I thought of. After you clciked browse and picked where the file was saved did you clcik apply or OK? You need to click apply.

It seems that you've been misinformed.
When Disney created DCL they realized that they could not fill the ships year-round with families with small kids. They would have to attract adults with older kids, grandparents and adults without kids to fill the ships.
In order to do so, they set-up a large area for the kids clubs to keep many of them busy, they also designated adults only areas in the entertainment district, around a pool, a restaurant and an entire beach on their island. How many other lines have done that? The result is that ionically, on a ship where you expect to have a lot of kids, there are places to go to be without kids.
In addition, while the shows in the WD theater are all very family-oriented, they can get rather adult themed in the Rockin Bar-D after dinner when kids are not allowed. It's not Eddie Murphy Raw, but a lot of the jokes would have to be explained to most kids.
Boy, are we off-topic here. Happy birthday to this thread.

I guess that there's an excepption to the rule. "Fog Whistle" just doesn't sound right. Who ever heard of Fogwhistle Leghorn? The last ship that I was on had a big box on the back of the bridge labeled "Fog Signal Control". Perhaps someone couldn't make up their mind.

They are refered to as AIR HORNS. ;)
Others are steam whistles.
Since the modern ships use air, not steam, then I woudl say they are horns. ;)

Since the modern ships use air, not steam, then I woudl say they are horns. ;)
Are you SURE that they are air??? Many modern ships are still built with steam systems. Slow-speed diesel ships use an uptake boiler to make steam for a turbo generator so that they can shut-down the diesel generators when underway.
The Disney Cruise Line ships use five generators to power two electric motors that drive the ship so they probably don't have a steam system aboard. The "horns" are probably air. I've seen them go off and there was a little vapor coming out from the compressed air, not a whole cloud of steam as with a proper ship's whistle. I'm still stuck in the past when most ships had steam. I'll have to reconsider the cows analogy.:(
BTW, did anyone ever hear the ship's fancy hornwhistlesignaldevice on the first few voyages? It was AWFUL. It took a while for them to get the notes tuned. I was on Magic voyage 8 and we were on deck 10 during departure. When the fancy "when you wish upon a star" thingy went off a bunch of us looked at each other and said "What the heck was that?"

when you get to the page where the link for the horn is don't "left click" and open the link. "Right click" it and pick "save target as" if you are using IE.
If using Firefox "right click" and pick "save link as".

Oh, THAT adult entertainment. Nope, no casino. There's bingo but it's just not the same. Perhaps a game of craps up on deck 10 or Liar's Dice in the Promenade Lounge is about as close as you're going to get. Then there is a casino in the Atlantis in Nassau if you need a quick fix.

BYW, bulls have horns, ships have whistles.
There is a lot of confusion surrounding this point. The reason you still hear people say "ship's whistle" is not because ships still have whistles, but rather because it's traditional nautical terminology for the ship's primary noisemaker, whether it's actually a whistle or not. The same is true for locomotives. Steam-powered ships and trains usually had steam whistles as their primary signalling device, but modern diesel vehicles do not.
None of what we call "cruise ships" have true whistles. Cruise ships all have either diaphragm air horns of the SuperTyfon design, or electric piston horns (a device where an electric motor reciprocates a piston at the end of a horn-shaped resonator). The Queen Mary II has horns of the older Tyfon design, which were originally designed for steam, and were often referred to as "whistles" for the above mentioned reasons. In much of Kockums and Leslie's own literature, the steam Tyfons are designated as horns, which they are (because they use a diaphragm and have a horn-shaped resonator).
The bottom line is this: you can call it "the whistle", but if you want to be the expert, you should know why you're calling a horn a whistle. And it's not wrong to call it the ship's horn(s), because they do have horns (resonators so-called for their geometrical resemblence to the animal protrusions of the same name).

This is a fun one when you're in port and a Disney ship comes in:

Hi..we where on the Carnival Elation July 18,04 and we docked next to the Disney Magic in Cozumel..we they docked there horn or what ever they call it played "When you wish upon a star"..i was wondering how often do they honk the horn??
Thanks
They blew the horn when we were leaving each port and during the sea day (they usually make an annoucement before doing it). In fact I was sitting by the hot tub and couldn't hear what they were saying over the loud speaker...suddenly the horn sounded and I almost fell off the side. If you are on deck it is very loud!
