Holland America Line enabled its Signature Preferred Online Check-in process to collect credit information, eliminating what the company said is the most time-consuming part of check-in at the pier.
Customers completing and submitting required information online can print out a boarding pass and proceed to a special line at the pier where their information is verified, identification is checked and a photograph is taken for ship security.

Credit cards are authorized when information is transferred to the ship just before departure.

That's nice ... but I don't see where it saves time. Our check-in has been fast with the boarding pass. They swipe the passports to verify numbers and check the credit card and I.D.

But since you often don't go straight from the check-in desk to the gangway without an additional wait, what difference does it make overall?

On our last HAL cruise the paper-form check-in line was about 1/2 the length of the on-line one, so we just took the short line. Then we waited another 1/2 hour before they started boarding. :)

My guess is that the move to accept and get authorization helps HAL the most, by ensuring that any credit card problems are dealt with before embarkation.
I never found the amount of time it took to swipe our credit card to be a delay in boarding.

I agree. It takes more time to take your photograph for the boarding pass/room key than it does to swipe the credit card. For me, the less I post my credit card information over the internet, the better.

Technically it won't save us any time as we always book suites and have a different check-in line.

As far as the credit card goes - doesn't take long to swipe that.
