I don't know if there are any rules regarding knitting needles but I have certainly seen people knitting on board...using kniting needles.

If you are arriving by air, they should probably be packed in the luggage. After that they should be okay.

Had an experience with knitting needles at the pier a couple of years ago in Fort Lauderdale when boarding an HAL ship -- I was traveling with friends and one in our party had knitting needles in her carry on bags (we had flown in the day before and she figured that she could use her knitting to help with any waiting time while boarding the ship) -- security found the knitting .... their first response was to try to remove the knitting from the needles to let her keep the garment in progress and to impound the needles .... when my friend complained they took the needles and the knitting and then she was subjected to a VERY careful security screening -- once on board we went right to the front desk to inquire as to the fate of her knitting and were told that we could have it back when we returned to Fort Lauderdale.
In actual practice as soon as the ship was out to sea past the international limit the knitting was politely returned to our cabin and its owner.
I would suggest keeping the knitting nicely hidden in your checked baggage until after you have cleared security at the pier and are safely on board.

I was in the Seattle airport on Tuesday, and there was a woman knitting while waiting for the flight to board. I have to assume it was in her handbag or carry-on luggage. There didn't seem to be any problem at all about taking it on the airplane. Therefore I assume that it is permitted on the ship.

You might want to consider plastic or wooden needles for your vacation and make sure the piece is started and already on the needles - maybe if you are using one pack the patten close by so that they can see what you are doing...

I think it's hit and miss depending on the airport security team...Safest way to go is put it inside your check in baggage..

I don't think they will allow you to knit an "Afgan"

I am a knitter and I have never had anyone even question my needles. I have flown with the needles and taken them on several ships with no problems. I will continue to do so. I do use wooden needles and usually round ones. Maybe that is why.
