I posted this on the Princess Board. Someone suggested I post it here as well. Sounded like a great idea:

Nope, not me - my sister-in-law just broke her ankle (8/1) and we leave for our Crown Princess cruise on 8/10. The break itself is not so bad in her ankle, but her heel is also "shattered." So, no walking or soft cast for her. She's casted from toe to knee.

My brother is taking a wheelchair with us - to avoid any problems with getting one from Princess and also so that we can have it off of the ship. She'll also have crutches. Anyone ever in this situation? Have any thoughts/ suggestions as far as making her life a little easier on the cruise? Anyone been on any excursions that might be "wheelchair friendly?" Anything that anyone can tell me that I might use to make her vacation just a little easier would be greatly appreciated!!!! She's pretty bummed about the break, but I keep promising her we'll do everything we can to be sure the cruise is still great!

Thanks -

If you want feedback about possible "wheelchair friendly" shore excursions, you should tell us what ports you are calling on. Most shore excursions require climbing in and out of busses - will her cast and crutches allow her to do that? If not, wherever you go you might want to consider using taxis and let her sit in the front seat - doubt that beach excursions are feasible with crutches and a wheelchair either.

SusieQusie,

I just wanted to offer some wheelchair notes (we used a manual wheelchair on our cruise last year for my husband):

Label the wheelchair in several places to avoid it "rolling" away with someone else!
Sometimes the foot rests in the front of the wheelchair get caught - bumps, uneven surfaces, etc.
To avoid launching your sister-in-law over bumps, go slowly and/or back the wheelchair over the questionable areas.
If possible, back into elevators.

Most people are very nice and helpful. Tell her not to be upset - it sounds like you are traveling with a good group, so she will have a lot of support.

Have a great time!
