Any benefits for being a past passenger on Princess or Carnival?

Being a past-passenger on those lines---or any lines in the Carnival family---get you the reduced "Mariner Rate" available on some cruises. That's all.
Frequently you can get that rate---or even a lower one!---from a TA anyway.

Past cruises on those lines do not get you Mariner Status toward days sailed on HAL, or the invite to the Mariners' Party.
Big deal.

I have sailed HAL before, but my friend hasn't. Will I be able to take her as a guest to the Mariner's Reception (if we choose to go)?

No - your friend will not be invited to the Mariner reception nor should you take her along.

LOL, Ruth, on the 'Big Deal'. I think first time HAL cruisers greatly overrate an invitation to the Mariners' Party awaiting them on their 2nd cruise. It is very crowded, even with it split into 2 groups. You just sit there and hope to get a drink and we now just go to the Ocean Bar instead.

I don't think my friend will be too disappointed... and I know I won't be if I skip the reception. However, she is going to be so jealous when I get a tile and she doesn't! :D :D :D
