Wife & I have about 2 glasses of wine each night at dinner. Is a wine card a good deal for us on a 10 day cruise?

I can't remember what it costs, but I thought it was a good deal. We bought one for 20 glasses for our 10 day cruise, and had a couple glasses left at the end! I think we saved a little doing it that way.

Our wine card was for 20 glasses - cost about $77. We really liked the convenience of this card. DH could order red with his beef, and I could get white for my fish. No more having to compromise and decide on which bottle to order. The wines are house variety, and were adequate with dinner. It is a great idea, and I hope that HAL continues to offer them.

Ahoy!
The first day aboard (embarkation) they will have a 'spread' (on the Lido Deck) of the various package deals on wines and the 'house wines' will be available for a tasting (only if you ask-they prefer to push / sell you a package instead) . You can sample and decide if a particular type of 'house wine' is something you'd like to sip nightly, i.e. a Merlot, Chard, etc. at dinner. If you find the wine acceptable by all means purchase a card good for either 10 / 20 glasses of wine. Beware of purchasing on the internet since the shipboard credit in regard to the 15% tip doesn't seem down to trickle down to them at this point in time (according to the wine stewards and servers I've talked with since they initiated the wine and cocktail cards) and, the price is the same anyhow whether purchased on the internet or aboard. I might add you can purchase another one anytime during your cruise. The savings? It's kinda like buying nine glasses and getting one free (I remember the breakdown to be $3.88/glass versus the standard $4.50/glass: no biggie really, just a matter of convience perhaps).
In any event, HAVE A GREAT CRUISE!
Bon Voyage and Good Health!
Bob:)

Does the wine card has house cabernet? I doubt the have Hess Collection or Robert Mondavi on the house wine list.

The 20 glass card is $67.50+15% service charge = $77.63 (10 glass card is $36 x 1.15 = $41.40)
Buy it where you'll use it most, the dining room, so that server gets the credit for the service charge.
Our favorite is the Pinot Grigiot. :)
Does the wine card has house cabernet?
Yes - Cabernet Sauvignon

Thanks for the tip on waiting to buy a wine package on the ship. I would much prefer to know that the service charge has a higher chance of getting to the staff on board then.

If I buy the wine card through Ships Services, where does the service charge go? I am one who likes to buy things ahead and get them paid for before I go. What is best to do if I decide to buy a wine card?

What is best to do if I decide to buy a wine card?My guess is that it goes into "the pool" along with the $3/person/day of the auto tip not allocated to your room or dining room stewards ... and "everyone" shares it, not just your wine server(s). If it ever gets to the ship at all, that is. That's why I suggested buying it from your dining room wine steward. :)

If you ask they will tell you "No", but people have been doing it with no problem. It may get you a "knowing look" if you show up on the first day with 15 out of 20 punches used, though. :)

I found the wine card to be a good deal. However, I was not allowed to use it when I first got onboard at noon, and I was told that it would be in my stateroom and it was not. I had to go to the front desk to request it. (I had purchased it directly from HA) and at Half Moon Cay they would not accept it. In the diningroom, the wine steward did not think too highly of having to punch the card. Oh well, I had a good time anyway!:)
