I heard RCL banned pax from knocking on cabin doors disrupting guests for scavenger hunts. How does HAL handle these ???
Just wondering if this is a big deal on HAL ?????

Scavenger hunt on the Zaandam last year was held in the Mondriaan Lounge. The room was divided into 2 sections and it was a race between each section to see who could get the items first. We never left the Louinge. Items asked for were "black teeth" ( a comb), a $100 bill, a white bra, etc......

HAL doesn't do a scavenger hunt like RCI. But on some of the ships and depending upon itinerary, there is a "sea quest" held in the main show room. Sometimes it is divded into 3 sections if there are a lot of people there. Most of the time it is divided into 2 sections - Altantic and Pacific - names usually given to the groups. Most people stay right in the room. But if an item is asked for that no one seems to be coming up with, a couple of people will run out and try to find it. We have gone to several - they are a lot of fun.

On (rare) occasion I have participated in a true scavenger hunt (different from SeaQuest, which is a blast!) on HAL. They're not held often, and usually on a longer cruise.
I doubt very much, however, that it crossed anyone's mind to knock on doors to get the needed goodies. I did go down a well-attended bar trying to get a Platinum American Express Card. No one would give me their's.
Never understood why not?

We have been on several 21 day cruises and never had a scanvenger hunt.
Now that upsets me. I want one!

One time we saw a woman come into the lounge with 2 bags of items. She had been on the ship the previous week and had attended the sea quest. So she filled her bags with as many items as she could remember from the list from the previous week. She even had the nerve to sit down front. Some of the items were repeated and some were new. In a way she was spoiling it for everyone else who were sitting on her side of the lounge as she kept getting things out before anyone else could. You would have thought they were giving away prizes for the team that won and to the person who brought the most stuff. Since prizes aren't given out, she was just wasting her time (IMHO).

The teens on the 7/17 Zuiderdam had a scavenger hunt. I don't think they went door to door though. My son enjoyed it and won a prize.

KK - I agree with you. What you are saying about the people with "bags" for Quest happens on other lines too. I think it ruins the spirit of the game which is to scramble about to find the items while people cheer teams on. Last game I watched one team dominated with all their "goodies". It took the fun out of it :( . After that I stopped attending.

On our last HAL cruise, this past April, a 10-day Mexican Riviera trip, we had our first-ever true scavanger hunt - not Sea Quest - true scavenger hunt. It did NOT require knocking on anyone's door, but did require such things as getting the autograph of the CD and 3 other cruise staff; autograph from a cast or band member; the name of the sculptor on a sculpture in the Lido Buffet (never even noticed it before then-the sculpture, that is), cocktail toothpick with the little HAL flag, stuff like that. We had several teams of 4 and had 15 or 20 minutes to round up all the items-I think about 20 in all. It was a lot of fun.
I really enjoy Sea Quest as well, and they seem to change the lists of items each time. One time we played they asked for a Rolex watch----no one had one. The CD told me later that on one cruise, a woman threw down from the balcony to one of the asst CDs, her diamond Rolex!

I would really love to do a real scavenger hunt. The last time we did one like Bill S described, we were on an NCL ship.
We didn't have anything like that offered on our 10 Mexican/Sea of Cortez cruise on the Ryndam a couple of years ago.

KK, re the woman with 2 bags of stuff. That reminds me of all the pax in the trivia games who have been on so many cruises they keep all of the answers to the quizes then win every game. Most ships use the same questions for the quizzes, also the trivia games in the library where folks sit with the reference books out to get the answers. No fun at all in that......I quit doing the trivia games and quizzes......jean
Also the pax who bring a pre built boat on board for the ship building contest

We had a real scavenger hunt on our 16-day Noordam Holiday sailing. It was great fun, we had about 10 teams - had to get the autographs, a HAL flag (we used the appetizer toothpick flag), black shoe lace, bar of HAL soap, shoe horn, HAL keychain (my daughter bought one in the shop!), a piece of sheet music, and all kinds of other fun stuff.
It was great fun, no banging on anyone's door - but one of the pax did get upset about all the activity. He was trying to nap.

Jean - we are like you, we used to love to play trivia and pick up the daily questionaire in the library. But a couple of years ago, we watched one woman pick up the sheet, disappear for a couple of minutes, and then come back to the library and turn in her sheet - all completed.
That's when we quit going to the trivia games, etc.

jean-
The daily quiz on our last cruise, Maasdam had some of the hardest quizzes we've ever seen! They were so hard, many times people won with 5 or less correct answers. We saw alot of people using the internet and reference books too. Many of the questions were so obsure, even the internet wouldn't help. DH & I got so discouraged, we gave up ... :(

You mean they couldn't find the answers on the internet?

I was surprised too. I'm a pretty good online researcher... these questions were so obscure, we wondered if they were made up!

On one of our cruises, a scavenger hunt like the one Bill S described was held for the teens. Two very polite, teenaged girls asked me for my autograph, as they needed one from someone with red hair. I asked if it had to be natural, we all got a good laugh out of that, and I happily obliged. I later learned they had won the game. :)
