I just got these pictures from Christine aka MissWindyCity from her brother Richard aka trickiedick. This is another view of the aft of the Westerdam. Appears to me the the VA cabins on deck 5 will feel like tunnels out on the deck.

Thanks so much to Trickiedick, MissWindyCity, and Lisa for gertting us more picutres of the Westerdam's new aft. It is wonderful to actually see what everyone has been trying to describe to us.

Are my eyes playing tricks on me.... what is on deck 7 port, SB7142, my future cabin. Something is on the veranda and the wraparound that I cannot make out.

Karin...
I think what Lisa meant by more pictures is that she re-posted them a little bigger on the second post. If anyone wants me to email them full size as an email attachment...email me at MissWindyCity@aol.com and I will be happy to forward them to your email address.

Could it be the window washing equipment ?

Seems to me there is plenty of open area on the verandahs-I wouldn't say they ruined the Westerdam in my opinion.

Maybe... Just odd... I haven't ever seen anything there before in the past pictures that I've seen.

When Lisa was referring to "more" pix... she was talking about in addition to the picture that Teresa took and Lisa posted for her yesterday. You can find it in the thread Westerdam July 20th to Aug. 9th... She got a terrific angle to show the profile and the depths of each deck!!!

Thanks for the photos. I couldn't agree more. Yuck.

I really don't see how they can continue to charge the same for the corner aft cabins on deck 5 as they do for deck 4. Maybe they need to invent a new category for them - "SD" if they come with Neptune access, or "SX" if they don't. (Hey - if you're going to have VD, you might as well have SX too! :D Sorry - couldn't resist.) If I were getting that much square footage, inside and out, at a lower price, I wouldn't mind the lack of sun so much.

Similarly, I'm not sure those VAs shouldn't be reduced to VBs. Either that or they'll be the ones that everyone with VA-VC guarantees ends up with. We'll see. I can't imagine picking one of those cabins intentionally unless you absolutely cannot tolerate sun.

OK, thanks very much Teachergal; I did go to the other thread to see what Lisa had previously posted. I think the photos on both threads give us a good idea of the new "aft" configuration. Now I know never to pick a deck 5 aft cabin, unless I particularly want shade.:)

I think there will be some pros and cons to these cabins. I think in Alaska this will be ideal especially if it is raining. Then I can remember many posts about saying there was too much sun in those cabins and people that have to be careful of being in the sun too much. The good thing is that the size remained the same so it is still very large. You figure that all the side cabins are fully covered. I am not defending it because it still looks ugly but I doubt it will stop people from booking these cabins. In many ways it will feel like an additional room. In all honesty I am sure we will continue to book this cabin.:o

Lisa,
Richard told me that he went to take a look at the corner cabin before getting off the ship and he absolutely loved the layout. I think you are right...there are pros and cons but definitely in Alaska the covered balcony will be a plus. If we didnt have a covered balcony on our last Alaska cruise....we wouldnt have been able to use our balcony for several days because of rain!

I feel incredibly sorry for all the future Westerdumb passengers who aren't on CC.com and aren't aware that the Deck 5 aft staterooms that they specifically chose for open air and sun are now caves.

Sadly, it seems that this is the future for the first 2 Vistas too, and now Eurodam.
I specifically chose aft staterooms for my parents and myself on the inaugural for the open air and sun, but it looks like all aft verandahs aboard Eurodam will be totally covered too.

We were in 4181 in Alaska and enjoyed that the balcony was partially covered for the same reason. I liked that the aft cabin, dependent upon positioning, gave us the choice of sun or shade at the same time on the same balcony.

Thanks for the photos. I couldn't agree more. Yuck. ... I can't imagine picking one of those cabins intentionally unless you absolutely cannot tolerate sun.I can "tolerate" sun, but I think on a Caribbean or Mexican Riviera cruise I would prefer the deck 5 with more shade. On northern cruises (AK, Baltic, etc) the greater exposure of deck 4 would be better IMO. Maybe that's because we get plenty of sun at home!

I thought I would be the only one that liked the more covered deck 5 cabins.
I used to work in hot attics and on roofs in the middle of summer in AZ when I installed air conditioning. So you can understand why I wouldn't book an uncovered veranda just for the "pleasure" of baking in the sun!

I would love that corner aft in Alaska too...imagine enjoying the scenery and glaciers from there even in the rain.:)

Perhaps the VAs are more "tunnel-like", but then, since they are the same width as the cabin, couldn't you say the same thing about inside the cabin?

Sean, I was thinking the same thing, darn there I go thinking like Sean again...... Its really same as a side veranda, just deeper. I'd give it a try, as someone who doesnt tan but rather goes from pale to lobster in 60 seconds I could use the shade :)

Seems to me that too much is being made about the design of the new aft when many have never been on it yet before making judgments about whether it is good or bad. Isn't there enough sunshine on deck and around the pools to satisfy.

Crusing Bob, the point is that many on this board do enjoy the aft suites on the Vista Class ships, many of us do love the sunshine. There is nothiing better than to be enjoying breakfast out on the large verandah enjoying the morning sun as you come into port. There is also mothing better than to have a wonderful Sail Away Party in the open air out on these verandahs. While yes you are very correct we have not tried it yet and I am sure we will but we will miss how the verandah once was.. I am just one of the many that thinks they should just leave the Vistas they way they were orginally designed. If it ain't broke, why fix it???

Yes, but it still has the Largest by far verandah and from what I have seen of deck 4 and deck 6 corner aft cabins, deck 5 is definitely the largest with the best cabin lay out. No we will more than likely always stay with deck 5 corner aft. Hmmmm..... that might be a good question for the Eurodam Blog about the cabins sizes of the corner afts.

Thanks Much Dear, but I'd be more inclined to downgrade to my usual SS.
I'd thought that I was paying a bit more to get full sun - which would be worthwhile to me as early July is cold and foggy here in SF - but I made the error of expecting the stern section to be the same as Noordam...
...I guess I was so excited about booking that I didn't spend enough time comparing the deckplans.

Brian - thanks for that response on 8147. I wasn't even aware of the changes to the Westerdam when we booked - first cruise with HAL (after Princess and Carnival).
We just hope that there is somewhere covered to sit and maybe somewhere for some sunshine as well. We always try to spend a lot of time on our balcony so seemed like a good cabin to book and we got a good price on the SB. I will make sure we take some detailed photos of the cabin and verandah so I can post them in early November. It may assist some people for later on.

Hi,
RSVP is a cruise where the ship is 'hired out' as it were [these senior moments I can't think of the proper term] to a company or organisation. This particular cruise was a gay cruise. They had a great itinerary including Venice overnight.

Booked 5190 on Westerdam for May. Don't mind complete shade(I'm the one on the beach with a long sleeve shirt and a hat under the umbrella) My mom, sister and I wanted the biggest stateroom with the biggest balcony. With the rain in Alaska we want to make sure we can sit out on the balcony in Glacier Bay. I just got back from the Crown Princess and we had an aft suite on Carribe , the 10th floor. We did'nt know ahead of time(nothing on the Princess boards) there was a slight overhang from floor 11. We still had sun part of the day but when it was raining I was still able to be out there. Esp. in the Carribean a little cover was a good thing!

Thanks, for the clarification about RSVP. Several others were so nice to explain it.. I was a little confused by you saying "pay attention to the back deck". What was I suppose to pay attention to????

I'm very glad to have the pictures now to know the changes that were made. No, I'm not all that happy with the smaller deck on my 7th deck corner seeing that was exactly WHY we booked that cabin . But how bad could any of this be??? We'll all be a wonderful cruise and a gorgeous ship. How could it be anything but fantastic!!!!:D

Christopher and I are giving thought to one of those, ourselves. We're almost certainly going to move to someplace else, but are waiting for our booking to finish transfer to our new TA. (I wish this would get finished ... it's taken months).

We're either going for a T or, otherwise, to a G category outside on the upper prom deck. If I could get Christopher back into an inside J on maindeck, I'd do it ... but he's whining about wanting sunlight.

When you're deciding, don't forget where we're going, Brian. We can have some nice, bright, sunny days in Norway and the British Isles. But we can get some cold, rainy, drizzly ones, too. Being able to sit outside with shelter from the elements---and the wind!---might be an advantage.

Remember, too, it's Mom and Dad's first cruise. It's going to be special to them no matter where their cabin is.
(not to mention the very special people they'll be meeting ;).)

Hi Teachergal,
it was 'pay attention at the back' as in at the back of the class but you are right we hadn't mentioned charters before. See it is easy to remember the word charter now [this morning I just could not lay my brain cells on it].
Yep, I think they will have had a great time, nice to be able to choose your ports of call and no children [tee hee!] Don't come down on me those with children, it's a teacher thing.

Besides the point but it reminds me. I went on lots of cruises but always wondered who Bill W was and how come his friends are on each cruise! Did I feel silly when someone explained to me.

No tsd1, I don't remember there being a stage on the Lido deck.

Does the photo show a stage on the aft Westerdam Lido deck?

Covered this before:
Yes, for the charter's outdoor disco - it's not a regular feature of the ship.

Ruth--

Thanks for the advice - I hadn't considered the rain, but then I like weather in general - rain or sun doesn't matter to me as long as it isn't dull and grey...

...I guess I'm just cranky - especially after going through a particularly dismal/grey/foggy summer here at home - but the sun finally came out today and I got to enjoy the mid-70's sun for a bit during lunch today.

Teresa, OK, the light finally goes off in my head. Kids in the back of the class. Sorry Now it makes perfict sense. I have been retired for about 5 years now so it is hard to remember. But do I really want to???

I am going to enjoy this cruise no matter how the aft end is laid out, I know. But I have read so many of Laffnvegas's post about the beautiful views you see from the veranda, I was so looking forward to having our friends out there for cocktails before dinner, spending time out in the sun on the back veranda just with my sweetie and not trying to fight the lounge savers for a spot together. I still think there will be plenty of room even with the new changes.
But, just for curiosity sake.... we booked a B2B in April,'08 on the Oosterdam(7 days to Mexico, 4/19, in SC5186 and 4 days repo,4/26 to Vancouver, BC, SB7132) to see what the back deck was like on the Westerdam before her retrofit.:D :D
