I just read the thread I just bought a horse, now what? I don't get it -- oh I get that this person bought some type of wooden horse & has to decorate it.

My questions are:

Why?
Does it benefit something / somebody?
What do you win if you have the best decorated or named horse?
Where / how can you purchase one of these horses?
Do all cruise lines do this or only certain ones? I've been on RCI & NCL but have never seen a horse.

It sounds like fun. Can somebody please clue me in. Thanks.

6 horses to a ship Small wooden horses on a stick- they are auctioned off. There are a few horse races so people can bet on the races while at sea.
YOu dont win anything for best dressed horse. You DO get recognition all week. And the last night there is an owners race--if your horse wins you split the pot with arnival. Depending on what each horse auctioned for is the pot. I have seen horses go for a few hundred bucks. so the pot must bemore then I could ever win at the casino.

So this is a Carnival thing? Would explain why I've never seen it; I've never sailed Carnival.

Thanks for the explanation.

The Diamond Princess does it as well. It sounds like fun.

Pretty well all cruise lines do it, it's a tradition that dates back to the Transats.

Let's say I wanted to do this on my next cruise, where would I look? How do I go about bidding on a horse?

Trish, the cruise director will have an auction of the horses, usually on the first day around the pool area. The whole thing provides some fun and a chance to win or loose some money.
Please look at the link below, it is to a thread with a similar question:
