We are having a perfectly wonderful cruise to Alaska on HAL Volendam. This is a beautiful ship, in great shape. With only 1400 pax, it is a bit more comfy and cozy than the Vista class ships. It has pretty much everything they do, but only on a smaller scale. About the only thing missing is the hydropool and the glass elevators. The food is wonderful, the service is great. The new fun show for the Master Chef’s dinner, featuring the showgirls as “waiters”, was fabulous!

The ports have been fun. Ketchikan was -- guess what -- not raining! The ship’s excursion to Saxman Native Village was very interesting and left Renee plenty of time to shop!

We had a lovely day at Icy Strait Point, bright sunshine and very warm. We toured with Keith of Teckk Outfitters and he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. He said that the only problem was that the bears like to lie in the shade on warm days, but we did manage to sight one black bear fishing its way upstream, along with lots of beautiful scenery, eagles, interesting plants and lots of salmon in the streams.

Today we are in Juneau. Renee’s dogsledding on the glaciers was cancelled but she did manage to substitute a glacier landing trip so she was very excited by that.

All in all we are having a GREAT cruise and I will certainly plan to post our report and pics shortly after we return.

Hello Mike!

Yes, the Volendam is a wonderful ship and you are so blessed to be on her in Alaska! My family and I would love ot be there with you! We were on the Volendam in March on the Sunfarer Panama Canal cruise and absolutely loved the ship! We want to get to Alaska sometime soon. I hope that you and Renee have an absolutely fanatstic cruise! We would love to hear more about your cruise when you can. Thanks for posting from Alaska! Have a great night!
