I am on a cruise Oct 1. When can I expect to get my cabin assignment? I keep checking on the online immagration forms, but it still says "stateroom: GUAR"...

Our guarantee for Sept. 28 hasn't shown up yet either. I hear that the average is 3 weeks out, which would be tomorrow for ours.

I keep checking on the online immagration forms, but it still says "stateroom: GUAR"...Usually 3 to 2 weeks before sailing, so I'd say you've got 5 to 12 days more to wait. BUT sometimes the assignment doesn't happen until much later. The best upgrade we ever got wasn't set until 3 days before sailing. Some people don't learn their cabin until they reach the pier!

We're still GUAR for Sept. 21. It's been said that we may not know for 1-7 days before sailing. :(

Prepare to not know until you arrive at port. This way if it happens earlier, you will be thrilled.

As everyone has stated it can vary down to the last minute. But dont panic if you dont have it untill you arrive at the pier. The luggage people at the pier will have your cabin number and you can place it on your luggage tags at that time.

Those of you posting who are sailing in September, please post when you do get your assignment, and let us know if you got an upgrdade. We are waiting to hear, but not sailing until October 20th. We have GTY with VD category.

I have a guarantee for my November 10 sailing, and I am kind of hoping I don't get my cabin assignment until I check in :) . First of all, I love the suspense of not knowing until the last minute, and secondly, I have also heard that upgrades are frequently best for those who have to wait the longest :D

How do you get GTY rooms? Does the TA or line give you that rate? Also, is it better to book cheapest interior and hope for an upgrade or book at GTY? I would 'think' that the paid interiors would get upgraded and the GTY's would then get their rooms - Deal or No Deal??? Thanks for info!

It doesn't quite work that way as the "guarantee" cabin may have been for a higher category.
When you book a "guarantee" you book for a specific category. You can be assigned a cabin in that category, or any higher category---but not lower. The person who booked the inside can also get an upgrade, but not to make room for the guarantee if the person who booked the guarantee didn't book an inside.
I think I just used way too many words trying to make this clear, and in the process made it murky. Did it make any sense to you, star?

Okay--I looked at my docs again. The ticket still says NN guarantee but on the outside of the ticket book on the back are 2 windows. The window on the left has my travel agents name. The windo on the right has my name, party of 2 Statendam S732 16 Sep07 and then my booking number. Could I possible be so lucky that S732 means room 732 which would be an EE window cabin?

mustgo, the best way to determine your cabin assignment is to go to HAL's website and head straight to your Immigration Form (aka Check-in form). If your cabin is assigned it will show up there.
It's unlikely to be on your documents as they are printed too far in advance.
At 8-days out your cabin assignment should be showing any second now.
Good luck! (and have a great time ;) )

My guess is that this is the Statendam's 732nd cruise?? That's possible if they averaged 1 week each, since the ship was launched in early 1993.

Okay, I guess we wait some more. Last I heard we were still wait listed for early dinner. I am more concerned about that then which room we are in. Time to start packing anyway.

Hi Quenby,
This is Jody Cheek -- we were with you on the whale watching excursion in May. I'm so glad I found you.
We will be on the Veendam 10/21 and still don't have our cabin assignment. We booked a BB. Our docs are in but not our cabin. I guess we'll be surprised.
How have you been? What have you been doing? I hope you have a great time on your cruise.

I have a question hope someone has a good answer. I am sailing on the Volendam Nov 3 with a gty FF. I do not have a cabin assigment and wonder why since the ship is completely sold out. Does this mean I might get a visit from the upgrade fairy? Hope someone can give me an answer.
Thanks,

I booked a b2b cruise beginning on 9/26 on 9/11..........booked GTY......
got our cabin assignment 9/14, (or 9/13). I was prepared to get it at check-in since we purchased so late.
Booked an outside unobstructed for the five day and an inside for the ten day and the upgrade fairy blessed us.
We have unobstructed outside the entire way..........higher than anything purchased.
Now, if we can just get to Vancouver from Portland we shall be happy; our plane is grounded still.

Hi everyone, I booked a vc guarantee for our Nordam cruise in Jan. First time booking a guarantee and I understand how it works and won't expect to hear anything about which cabin right up until the cruise, BUT I was wondering if when you do get your assignment is that is it or if the cruise line can change it again. Say you get assigned a cabin 3 weeks before your cruise, is it a done deal or is there a possibility it may be different when you get on board?

You don't have a cabin assignment because it's too soon to have one; pure and simple. Assignments are generally made about 10 days- 2 weeks out---sometimes more/sometimes less.
Yes, you might get a visit from the upgrade fairy, but there's no "guarantee" of it. There's always a chance, and when you book "guarantee" there's a better chance of getting upgraded.

It can be changed again, but would be unusual. Once assignments are made they are usually over and done with.

Every cruise line handles guarantees differently and even with the same cruise line there is no standard policy. I booked a guarantee for a 16 day Antarctica cruise on Princess departing on Feb. 19, 2008 and I got a confirmed cabin last week with a nice upgrade even though the ship is almost sold out. I've never heard of HAL specifing a cabin for a guarantee that far in advance.

We had a guarantee for an HH fully obstructed on the Promenade Deck. I had read on these boards that those were really great cabins, with easy access to the verandah that runs the length of the ship. When I called, I could choose a guarantee. I remembered what someone had posted about only taking a guarantee if your would be happy with the category you already had. I was.
Then About three days ago I checked my immigration status, and we have been upgraded to an E category outside. We are tickled pink. I would have been very happy with the HH, but the upgrade was great. We have never had one before.
We sail on 10/17 on the Volendam. I have already started packing. I am so excited.
No one can answer questions about the Java Cafe. Does it still exist?

The Java Cafe does not exist anymore. They used to offer free specialty coffees and cookies. Now they have the explorer's cafe which serves coffee drinks for a fee.

Except on the Prinsendam. Presumably that, too, will disappear when that ship goes to drydock in November. Until then, though, they serve the most delicious coffees, with little yummies, and all you need to do is ask! :)

Mike & I are on the 10/24 Volendam Canal cruise & booked BB Guarantee -- 1st time we've gone "guarantee" in 16 cruises -- as one would expect, we have no cabin assignment yet -- I'm hoping to find out during next couple weeks where we'll be!!! Sure would be nice to get upgraded, but not counting on it!!!
Noticed that AmberTeka got her cabin assigned already & she is on 10/17 Volendam (week before us) -- maybe that's a sign that they will work on 10/24 V next week!!!

Moondance75, I can't answer your question, but I believe the longer you wait for cabin assignment, the better your chances of a good upgrade. Please let us know if this is true when you do get your assignment, and good luck :D

Even if you get a stateroom assigned beforehand, they have the right to change it at the last minute and give you a different stateroom at the pier.

Maybe you're booked in a different guarantee category from the other guarantees who have assignments?
Maybe they are still making offers to folks for paid upgrades?
Maybe there weren't enough cancellations and they're looking for someone to bump from the cruise?
Maybe your TA has failed to contact you with info?
Maybe something else completely?
Nobody here can say - but if this is something that is a major concern for you, you're probably better off booking a specific stateroom next time you cruise.

I am hoping for a visit from the upgrade fairy. My TA is aware that if an upsell is offered that I will take it as long as its for a balcony.
I have always gotten an assigned cabin. This is my first guarentee. This is why I am curious about the process.

I finally got our cabin assignments!
We booked 2 H guarentees on the Zaandam for Oct 1 and got C3365 and C3367. So I guess we were "upgraded". Not bad. C3367 has a "partial sea view" but my infant daughter and mother in law are in there.. so it doesn't matter too much!

When I posted on this thread 5 days ago (see above) I also didn't have a balcony cabin assigned although we had booked BB Balcony Guarantee -- TODAY (this afternoon) checked HAL website under our booking number & happily found we had a specific cabin assigned -- an AA balcony on Navigation Deck!!
Today just happens to be exactly 1 month from our sailing (Volendam 10/24).
