So, what's the scoop on these? I keep seeing references and I'm clueless.

Thanks! :)

These "smilies" are gathered from various internet sites. The cheerleader bit developed as a come-back to some who posted in derision about the apparent "HAL cheerleaders" who sang the line's praises, seeing no fault in any regard. It was a lot of fun coming up with the individual avatars. Some folks found the cheerleader smilies to go along with it.

The Yum Yum man deal is in reference to a group cruise (the Yum Yum Man Cruise) planned for later this year. This is in reference to the HAL steward who dispenses after-dinner mints, candied ginger, and figs after dinner. He is dressed in an outfit reminiscent of the old hotel page boys ... also featured in Phillip Morris cigarette commercials on TV back in the fifties.

Thank you!

Does he refer to himself as the yum yum man? :D ;)

No. That's just a handle someone came up with ... since he dispenses the "yum-yums" to us after dinner.

He also strikes the chimes announcing the beginning of the dinner seating.

The Yum Yum man walks around to the various bars and rings his chimes to remind people to go to dinner.

You will find the Yum Yum man right outside the dining rooms doors near the end of dinner.

Jim, thanks for the photo. Now, it's all starting to make some sense. ;)

Don't worry they all know they are referred to as the Yum Yum man. On the old Noordam the same porter opened the door for you that leads out to the pool area from the Lido. Before auto tips I think the Yum Yum man made off like a bandit.

You know I never really thought about it until now. So many continue to tip the YumYum Man for being gracious and just so darn cute.

I am curious as to when the endearing Yum Yum Man tradition started.

Care for a fig?

They are always sweet young men with pleasant personalties, friendly, delightful guys. They all know we call them the Yum Yums and I think it makes them proud as they know we call them that with affection and appreciation. It's another fine tradition of HAL that we would all be very, very sorry to lose. The Yum Yum iGuy s a 'signature' on the ships.....

Well, I will have just gotten off the Westerdam on Feb 3, so I don't think my boss will go for it (or my wallet). Thanks though :) I look forward to the yum yum man on my upcoming cruises though. http://pic18.picturetrail.com/VOL940/4245453/10451190/277420560.jpg

The more I read about HAL traditions, the more excited I get about going. Jan 27 is a LONG way off!!!

At the end of the cruise, after the disembarkation talk, the cruise director gathers a big group of the staff on stage and acknowledges them by their job (ie. dining room servers, Lido staff, room stewards, bar staff, etc.), including the yum yum man, and refers to him as such.

JIm,
I recognize that Yum Yum man!!! Isn't that Sun? He was on the Statendam last summer I believe. He was so charming

Peggy, I don't know if you were addressing me or the other Jim. But I can't remember the name of the Y-Y man I posted. This was taken on the Zuiderdam in February, 2003. I zoomed in, but couldn't make out his name tag.

Yes, Jim, I was referring to you. I'm sure it's Sun. We kept running in to him over and over on the cruise. He always remembered and called us by name.

Great job explaining the Cheerleaders and the Yummers!!

So's how's Texas?

Now that I have become an official member of this forum (booking a cruise on the Noordam,) does this mean that I have to change my avatar? :)

I have yet another question...We will most likely have to take an upper dining room during the main seating because lower is full. Is there a direct entrance to the upper dining room (or do we have to use the stairs) and is the Yum Yum Man also on upper level?

Well, you won't need to change your avatar ... since you don't have one. But you could add one if you like.

The Yum Yum Man is only on the lower level. You'll need to go down to get your treats. There is an elevator nearby if you need it.

Yes, there is a direct upper dining room entrance.

Whoops! I forgot that I did away with my avatar. I'll have to get creative when I have a chance to breathe. :D

Thank you for the dining information. My dad cannot walk up and down the stairs too well.

I was going to post my photo of the Yum Yum Man earlier, and then my computer crashed. Had to restart, so here he is!

I have not read through this entire thread so sorry if someone has already made this comment but.......

Yum Yum Man is also on Upper Level. He is always in the doorway when we exit the dining room and always goes into the lounges gonging us to dinner.
