my wife and i are thinking about booking a stern cabin, perhaps 5184 0n the westerdam. and we are wondering if anyone has any experience with one of these cabins. i would think the drawbacks might be noise and lack of privacy from the above decks. thanks for any advice.

The aft cabins are sought after by many. Enjoying the view of the wake is wonderful, and being back there allows you to see port and starboard views. You will still have enough verandah cover to provide ample privacy. I don't think noise is any greater there than anywhere else.

Haven't been on Westerdam....but we did have a stern cabin on the Statendam with a balcony. We loved the size of the balcony (it was extra long) and everything about the room. Would do a stern cabin again. The only noise we heard was when we were coming into port they put the stern thruster (sp?) on to manuever into place and there was also some vibration then, but we considered that our morning wake-up call and knew it was time to get up! After awhile, I got so used to the thrusters coming on, I hardle noticed it.

As far as privacy, people above could look down on a small portion of our veranda, but not all.

There has been much discussion on this topic concerning the Westerdam's aft end . The ship has undergone a renovation of the aft cabins. I believe deck 5 has been just about totally covered by deck 6 being brought over the top of deck 5. Do a search on this topic. CC member Teresa Price has some excellent pictures of the new aft end of the Westerdam as well as a CC member named trickiedick. Good luck.

5184 and 5185 are eversoslightly narrower than the 4 adjacent cabins. We were in similar cabins on Zuidy and it was uncomfortable to navigate the bath/closet area. Other than that, the wake cabins are primo for their views... just staring at the wake is mesmerizing.

You will enjoy complete privacy from above as the deck 5 verandahs on Westerdam are completely covered by those above.

However, if you'd like some sunlight , you'd be better off on another deck.

the S and M crowd. They have all those chains, slings and restraints. Aft cabins just look where you have been.
