If you go to the HAL website looking at deckplans you'll notice that they have changed their viewing format for all ships (deckplans are viewed in Adobe Acrobat) and that the "Deluxe Verandah Outside" Staterooms have been relabeled:

A becomes VA
AA becomes VB
B becomes VC
BA becomes VD
BB becomes VE
BC becomes VF

Is it me or did life just get a little more confusing?

It may take some getting used to ... but it seems to me it's a more logical progression of stateroom categories. Actually harder to figure out the other way. (I just wonder who will be inclined to book a "VD" stateroom? ;) )

Prior I had to ask is an A higher or lower category than an AA. What about B vs. BA vs. BB? It also wasn't obvious that it was a verandah. You had to know that when you got above a C category, you were into verandahs.

Now the verandah rooms begin with V for obvious reasons and the categories go from A through F. Seems to be much simpler to understand.JMHO

They haven't gotten all the pages updated yet. The new designations are noted on the Westerdam pages, but not Zuiderdam as of right now. I'm glad they're listing both the old and new handles. That will make the transition easier.

Uhhhh, I assumed the "V" was for Vista, to keep us the CC boards from confusing these staterooms with those of the same name on other ship classes.

I keep imagining a verandah as something attached to a stately Southern mansion, which is an odd image when you're talking about a ship.

Of course they still leave the suites as S and SS, even though they have verandahs. And why do they call SS a suite if it gets none of the suite amenities.

Well, it's all clear to me now.

I just went to the HAL web site, clicked fleet, then Westerdam. If I clicked on the picture by the word "deck plan" the deck plan came up in the old easy to read format. If I clicked the word "deck Plan" I got the Adobe format.

I have noticed the "V-" designations for verandas in the past when I looked at prices on the HAL site. It was usually for cruises that were far in the future. For the same ship the designation would be the A, AA, B etc. for cruises that weren't far out. Maybe it is a gradual change on a cruise by cruise basis. Stay tuned for HAL's latest

:)

Think this HAL idea is great. People who look at a category labeled VA know that it is the top category for the verandah suites (not counting SS, S and PS), and that VF is the lowest price category having a verandah. In the past people have been so confused about that A, AA, B, BB, etc.

But you have to remember that not all ships have categories that go from VA down to VF. The older "S" and "R" class ships don't have as many verandah categories as the Vista class ships.

However, Princess ships have VS and PS ... Vista Suite and Penthouse Suite. The only difference (on the Coral Princess, at least) is location. Since HAL has referred to their staterooms as veranda this and veranda that, I would tend to assume the V stood for veranda.
Let the debate begin!

I don't know what the V means anymore. Before Vista Class ships, you would sometimes see a V listed. This was a guarantee B.

If I had to guess, I would say it now means verandah on the Vista ships.
