Remember the blender thread of a few days ago that ended up being 11 or more pages? Well for those of you who enjoyed that thread . . . are you ready to have some fun with this???
This is quoted directly from a recent post on the Celebrity Board . . .
Quote-- We are four people on the Summit with adjoining Veranda cabins and want to have our balcony partitions opened. Will the room steward (or other) open this if we request it? If not, does anyone know what tool and size (usually an allen wrench) can be used to open it? -- Unquote
I could not believe the audacity of someone to ask this question. Now, I've heard it all. Guess I need to start carrying my allen wrench along when I travel in case I need to dismantle anything!

Sure, no problem, the room steward will be glad to take care of that. and since the cabins are a bit crowded for parties, he'll remove the wall between the cabins too. Just remember to tip him a little extra.

This is a true story:
My husband and I were on the Rotterdam two years ago. We were in the Neptune Lounge and a man was complaining that he wanted a lamp moved. The lamp was bolted into the table, on the inside. The sofa and table are essentially one unit and the lamp is part of that unit. He had some pretty harsh words for the consierge and HAL because the furniture could not be rearranged to suit him.
Therefore, in the spirit of this thread, what sort of tools do you think we should bring to rearrange the furniture to suit our convience or aestetic needs on the ship? I know I'd be more comfortable with the furniture arranged my way. Feng Sheu (sp?) you know!

OMG, I had to go look and see what the self-proclaimed 'XSnobs' had to say about that idea. The OP isn't faring too well. Gee, here we would have told him/her about the trusty chain saw - and suggested a jackhammer for digging a pit for the roast pig.

We were on the Z back to back a couple of weeks ago.
While were waiting in Ft Lauderdale between BtoB's they opened all the partitions for cleaning. You could really get a good game of bowling or shuffle board going down the ship.
By the way our Balcony partition wasn't locked and banged pretty nicely during a storm one night. Maintenance guy came with a honking big Allen wrench and locked her up.
I'm sure the neighbouring cabins would be really thrilled to hear all four of their partitions banging through the am....;)

To be totally fair to the OP (well partially fair *LOL)
I know that on Carnival ships the balcony partitions can be removed if requested. For just that reason, people in the same party in adjoing cabins who want one long balcony. In that event, either the cabin steward or a maintainence man does this and he does use a very large allen wrench . like I said I know Carnival offers this , not sure if any other line does. Obviously X does not.
So I can understand why the Op would ask this.
NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *LOL*
If the partitions cannot be opened , which by the posts on X ,I am assumeing they cannot be, What the heck makes you think that it will be okay to bring your own tools and removes these things yourself .
If these people ever show up on a HAL cruise they are to be immediately brought to either REVNEAL or myself for bait and/ or skeet detail *LOL*

I like cruzlovers' idea of bowling or shuffleboard when all the partitions are removed. Guests who have a balcony cabin will have to check the activity schedule so that the times they are enjoying breakfast or cocktails does not interfere with the games.

Well, with all the list of stuff that can be found on this here boat, I'm a gonna get me the cheapest room, then my honey and little Bubba can knock down some of the walls around us and on the outside and build me one of those uppity rooms with the balcony!

Actually I just read about this on this very board regarding a HAL ship - I believe it was the Zuiderdam, maybe another HAL ship but it was definitely on this board. The post was a little over a week ago - maybe I can look it up? Someone did have the partitions opened - they are on hinges and have a locking mechanism so it's not like moving a wall - they're meant to be opened but probably only for emergencies is my guess., or so I've read on a few posts. Supposedly they were opened and secured together against the wall with small bungee type cord things (I know, real technical:p ) so they didn't flap in the wind. By romoving the partition not only did they have one large balcony but interconnecting suites (SS) which I believe are otherwise not available:eek: .

As someone above mentioned. yes they do open on the Zaandam as we had the same problem with it banging around, so we put the chair against it to keep it closed. it would be a nice feature to have it opened when families or friends have adjoining cabins. it would give you a place to gather. We were there alone on that cruise, however so did not care to have it opened.

He's bringing his own wrench? Ummm, isn't that how important parts of the ship are connected. Maybe he is planning on treating the ship like his private sleep number bed.....a little too stable, "let's open up this water chamber and fill it up. That should do nicely."
Maybe he decides he wants the suite across the hall, so he pulls out his handy wrench and removes the locking mechanism of the neighbor's door.
Maybe it has parts with it he can hide in his pudding on the Lido. "Oh help me. I've been injured, I am suffering psychological damage right here as I'm screaming. Someone put a tool in my food and I could have died! I deserve a free cruise for this one."
Maybe he is a peepking Tom and plans on going along and opening verandah partitions all the way down the side of the ship 'til he finds a  naked lady.
Or maybe, he is just worried the blender he has in his checked luggage will break and need a repair so he can sell his half price drinks on the pool deck.

Imagine this:
You and your loving companion book a 14 day second honeymoon. You sip champagne on your verandah and watch the sunset, thinking maybe you will just skip dinner afterall......
The next morning you ask room service to set your breakfast on the verandah. You pour your first cup of coffee and hear what can only be a toddler screaming for "mommy". Over the next 15 minutes, you hear six different little person voices. Later in the day you find out that the four suites next to you are inhabited by three families and two nannys. Guess where the nannys suite is? You got it. Right next door to you.
The verandah next to you and the three next to it are the day care center for this group. Yes, the partitions were open.
Every day from 8:00 until 8:00 PM the screaming and yelling continued.
SO much for romance. The second honeymoon couple were practically in tears when discussing this situation with the Guest Relations Manager. Nothing could be done.
DH and I had plenty of fantasies for those 14 days. Most included the parents, nannys and six little darlings. DH travels with his "leather man" tool set. He really came up with some amazing ideas of what he could do with these people.

Oh Jazzsea, how awful!!!! I can't imagine ANY cruise being enjoyable in that situation - let alone a second honeymoon. We sure wouldn't want to be next to a bait/skeet shop (warehouse?). We'll have to come up with some ideas on how to 'remedy' the situation if it should happen to any of us.

If the nanny's cabin was right next door, leaving the partition shut would not have mattered at all. Sure, it made passage easier ... but it would not have prevented the kiddoes from being with the nanny in her cabin. What a stroke of bad luck for the honeymooning couple!

Well, I always have my Leatherman (http://www.leatherman.com/) with me, so removing a partition isn't that big a task. :)
It did come in handy a few years ago when I somehow forgot the combination to the lock (yes, in those days we could lock 'em) on my suitcase.

...I read somewhere that on Rotterdam V one morning, a lady traveling alone was tired of a screw in the wall of her stateroom always snagging her nightgown so she proceeded to use her nail file to remove it...
At that very moment as the ship retracted its stabilizers to pull into port, a rogue wave slammed into the side of the ship causing a severe roll: pianos, roulette tables and anything else not bolted down sliding across the ship...
When the lady pulled herself off the floor of her stateroom, she quickly put the screw back into the wall thinking that by removing it SHE had caused the ship to roll!!!

Why is opening the partition so distastefull to some of you? I hope it is only the part about bringing tools on board to open it themselves - an over the top idea. As we are in two side by side VC's on the Westerdam (it was cheaper to pay the single supplement for a second cabin than for three in an SS), having the ability to move from one cabin to the other is an advantage. We do not expect to create one big balcony, just have passage between them. If the cruise lines (read HAL) want to attract a younger crowd and families, and are building new ships, why not design the partions so they can be opened and secured to create a pass through from one cabin to the other - that is, creating connecting cabins via the balcony. Are HAL board regulars too old to remember the fun of traveling and spending quality time with your children? And where better to do it than on a cruise?

I don't think opening the partition is distastefull to anyone. The jesting is not about opening the partition but bringing the tools on board to do it.:D

I don't about the rest of you. Bowling and the such seems boring. Now, when someone is really good with a bow and arrow, the end of the balcony is a short, but fun target.
Also a very thin strong string tied to the end of an arrow makes fishing a blast.
Fresh fish anyone??

I'm not against opening the partitions. I know that Holland America would prefer that you didn't do it, however. They believe that it presents a security risk.
I have been told that the request to open the partitions must go through the Guest Relations Manager and then the Hotel Manager. Once approved the Cabin Steward can (and might) take care of it.
It is wonderful for families in adjoining cabins.

mcduck - opening the partition is not distasteful at all - it is the fact that the OP thought of going to the extreme of bringing along his/her own tool so that he/she could open the partition whether it was meant to be opened or not. It was written with the tone that "if we want our partition opened by gosh, we are going to have it opened no matter what" -- at least that's how I read it.

This sort of "holier and more sophisticated than thou" sniping is why I've weened myself from these boards.
To the - Oh so sophisticated crowd - there are ships where the partitions are on hinges and moveable...
There are no dumb questions - just dumb responses...

Jazzsea,
I just disembarked from the Zuiderdam yesterday, Aug. 7th, and all we did was ask our cabin stewart at 3:30 p.m. to open the partition between our two SS balconies on the eighth deck. He had it completed by 5:00 p.m. (after the muster drill). He secured it at the top with the attached bolt, so our balcony partition did not swing back and forth, did not make any noise, and was a wonderful passage way to our daughter's cabin next door all week long.
Your cabin stewart has the tools to separate the balcony partitions; he does not need to ask anyone if he can do it. He told us he would have it done right away, and he did.
Before we left yesterday, we noticed that they open all of the balcony partitions and hose down the balconies before the next cruise passengers board.
I will write a review on our cruise tomorrow. It was great!:) ;) :) ;)
