View Full Version : HAL Ringtones

ClevelandOhio

I was just listening to a utube video of an HAL cruise and I heard the amazingly distinctive tone that is played throughout the ship before a general announcement is made. All of a sudden the memories just opened up all the pleasant times I've spent cruising.

Imagine that tone and that reaction -- EVERYTIME your cell phone rings. It sounds great. Has anyone ever run across that ringtone?

I swear, I had the same thought when viewing the same ( goofy) video.

I am not one for fancy rings, but this would be so cool and only those who sail HAL would know the source/meaning.

I Just made one from the Amsterdam's ship horn and now use it as my message alert. It scared me the first few times but now I love it. We hit a bit of fog in Alaska and it was blowing every two minutes and I went to 3 places to record it. The first place I was too close and cussing during it as my ears were almost blown out. The second I got it just right in a carpeted hallway outside the crows nest lounge when they were cleaning the deck outside and the automatic doors were always open. The 3rd was too quite.

This is the 2nd one and my favorite.

That is fabulous. What a great idea.

I'd love to have the we're making an announcement 'pings' for a ringtone.

Or Maasdam/Noordam's horn blasting HAL's usual toots.

Oh me too!!! I always say when I first hear that "they are playing my song" :D I know some people have been able to record their own ring tones but I have not checked into it. But I would definitely love to have that as mine:)

Okay, clever techno folks......

Prize goes to the first one to tell us how to have those as ring tones.

"Your assignment, should you choose to accept it"..... :D is to get all who seek it HAL's toots we can use for our ringtones.

[For those who are too young to remember......'Your assignment' etc, goes back to TV's Mission Impossible!!]

I'd also like to have the ping, ping, ping before announcements are made for a ring tone. What we need is a techno-savvy CC poster (Derf, where are you?) who can get those sounds and convert them to ring tones that we could download. Anybody else out there who can figure out how to do it???

Smooth Sailing! :) :) :)

... only those who sail HAL would know the source/meaning. I think it would be more well-known than that. IIRC it's the same tone on Princess, and I remember hearing it on the Travel Channel's shows they've had on one of the Behemoths of the Seas.

But I'd sure like to have it.

I'd also like the chimes to dinner.

I remember chimes in London's Heathrow. It always sounded to me like the rythmn for "Your dog has fleas!!!" :D

This idea is SO exciting! I've been watching all day for one of our tech-saavy people to pop in and magically place a link for the downloads. I'd love to have the world's coolest ringtone! :D

There is a program available for many Nokia models which will allow you to generate your own ring tones from MIDI (musicial information files). It appears that transferring from other audio formats to MIDI can be done, but I don't have a program to do it. I also don't know if these ringtones would then be specific to Nokia, or be available to any cell phone.

 What do you think of the "Dinner Chimes" the Yum Yum Guy plays (to call all of us to the feed trouth)sp? I love that great sound! I think if it was on my phone, every time my phone rings I'd be looking for a dinning room. We have one of those chime playing thingies in a closet.:D It's the same thing Mr. Yum Yum has. I will have to pay attention to the order of the notes next time they are sounding......steve

Getting it onto your phone might be a problem.
There's an easy way of doing it for an iPhone. I should be able to get it on mine tomorrow. :D

Thanks for the horn and the ringtone! Like many others, when watching that asinine video about the "expired" beverages, my heart leapt at the sound of the announcement ringtones. That's the best part of my seasonal walks to visit the Seattle Damships: even from my side of the chain-link fence, I can hear the ringtones before the announcement that the staterooms are ready. That's why I love this board and visit it every day. It feeds my obsession. I'm so glad I'm not alone!!

It should be possible to do it with iToner ... I understand there's been another update to it.

However, it should also be possible to do it with the itunes feature. Just drop a custom sound in and use it. I'll have to check that out first, before I buy iToner. I will definitely let you know ... but it won't be soon. I've got a busy day today.

Can you make a .mid format of this? I can easily get the tones on my phone with bluetooth, the phone just isn't nice enough to accept those formats.

Still counting the days until I get that iPhone.

OK for those that do not an iphone here is how I just placed the chimes as my ring tone. I am with Verizon and have a mrotorola razor. Go to your menu, then go to Get It Now, go to option 1 Get Tunes and Tones, click that, then option 4 is Record New. I then played what Greg gave us full volume placing the phone next to the speaker clicked OK to start then played the tones that I downloaded from Greg. Then hit stop when it is ended, the clikc options and you can set as a ring tone. It worked perfectly :)

I'm going to use one for phone calls and one for Alerts. :D
You can guess which will be which.

And, yes, if you want I'll see what I can do about combining them and also making a stand alone that whistles 3 times (for ship departure).

Sadly, I'm not sure how I'm going to get this into my iPhone. iTuner doesn't work with the new update ... AmbrosiaSW needs to fix that.

I'm just imagining all of you on the Eurodam and everyone's phone ringing with the same tone. Chuckle!

I haven't had a chance to try this yet since my speakers have been unplugged. Was supposed to get my new computer last week but the man was out with the flu and is coming wednesday. Then I'll turn Greg's message up loud and try what Lisa did. Hope I can do it. I love it when the ship's horn goes and i know we are leaving.

Carol....... We'll all call eachother on Eurodam and drive everyone around us nuts. Can you imagine 100 or more cellphones all ringing with the ship's horn ring tone? Maybe we'll make it into Ripley's Believe It or Not. :D

Most people on a cruise ship having the same ring tone on their cell phone all ringing at the same time.

Okay......it's late. Sorry. Guess that might not be a record any of us REally want to be a part of. ;)

Absolutely. Happy to be of help.
After doing a lot of research, it appears that I won't be able to get this ringtone into my iPhone until Ambrosia Software updates their utility that enables it. That, or Apple allows third-party / home-made sounds to be loaded onto the iPhone for use as ringtones.

Apple doesn't allow for unique ringtones, like this, on the iPhone. You can either use one of their stock ringtones or you can make one with iTunes ... but only from a rather large number of musical pieces/songs that you can buy on the iTunes music store. Unfortunately, I don't like musical ringtones ... I prefer tonal sounds, like the audio-alert sound on ship! :) Up until just recently there was a software patch that allowed one to make one's own ringtones/sounds and load them onto the iPhone for use. But, with a recent update to the iPhone software, that software patch broke and no longer works. :( I'll have to wait for Apple to either upgrade the software to allow user-created ringtones/sounds, or I'll have to wait for the software company that made the patch to fix it so that it will work again.

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, RevNeal, you are the best. Well, you and my son are the best - you provided the .wav file, and my son created an MP3 out of it and now my new Motorola Krzr (red, of course) sounds like we're about to have an announcement from the bridge!!!!! I love it, I love it, I love it. Of course, DH is just rolling hs eyes as I'm wandering around the house saying "Oh come on, phone me just one more time!"

Thanks Greg for recording and transferring the file for our use on these boards. You made my day.
