View Full Version : Which Cruise Lines Have you Cruised On?

RevNeal
August 4th, 2004, 11:50 PM
This is a difficult poll to post because there are more than 10 cruise lines that one might have cruised on. So, I chose 9 of the more popular ones and then added an "other."

If you've answered "other," please list it below. :) Among those "others" might be Crystal, Radisson, Seabourn, or Silversea ... just to name a few of the more expensive examples. :)

Cunard ,HAL, Princess, Big Red Boat, just about to try Orient Lines Marco Polo and MSC Lirica

I do like my first three in the list and feel a little trepidation trying the last two, especially the Lirica which I fear may be very different.

Any line which has freshly squeezed orange juice has got my support. I do hope HAL don't drop it! Its great seeing those oranges being juiced in front of me.

All except Disney. And a few that you didn't mention. Radisson, Oceania, American Hawaii, Explorer Starship (now the Song of Flower), Sitmar, Royal, Regency. Now I'm going to think all day of the ones I've forgotten. Oh, Emerald Seas, Commodore, Admiral, Delta Queen.

And after all of them I will still come back home to Holland America.

My "others" are lines that are no longer in business, including Dolphin and Premier.

Within a few weeks, I'll be able to add HAL to the list of lines we've cruised. :)

We have cruised on Carnival three times, RCI once, HAL once (another coming in Dec.!!), Dolphin three times, Epirotiki once, Regency once. I can't think of any other cruise lines we have tried.
All were wonderful cruises and we had some great times on them, with and without kids.
I love cruising!!

I sailed Carnival when I was young and single and gorgeous. Don't have that kind of energy anymore. I got about seven hours sleep (total) in the 3-night cruise.

My "other" lines were Royal Viking (excellent) and Chandris.
I suppose that last one could have been listed under Celebrity, but they're not at all the same.

I was really frustrated when I started putting this poll together; with just 10 slots I had to pick and choose ... plus leave one blank for "other." It wasn't ideal, but it seems to be working. :)

Our first 4 cruises were on Regency all of which we really enjoyed though we had nothing to compare them with(much older ships that needed some work but the service and food were great). We then tried Carnival once which almost put an end to our cruising it was so horrible. We decided to try again and found the Delta Queen a very different and wonderful experience, and then American Hawaii as it was the only way to do it in 7 days. We then tried HAL for the first time and fell in love with it. 4 of the last 5 have been with HAL. The other would have been but their dates didn't fit what we needed so we tried RCI. It was ok but we really prefer HAL. Next up we try the American Queen and then back to HAL in Jan. Would love to do more but there's just not enough vacation time!

Oh my, let's see now. First and foremost for 98 times, and still counting, The Delta Queen Steamboat Co. There is also Cunard (pre and post-Carnival), Carnival itself, Princess (pre-Carnival), Costa (pre-Carnival), NCL, American Hawaii, Dolphin, and Royal Caribbean.

I guess that it's pretty clear that with 98 cruises and cruise number 99,100,101 and 102 booked with The Delta Queen Steamboat Co., it is tops in my book! But as far as the blue water ships go, give me my fourth HAL trip anyday.

We have also cruised all of the mass market cruise lines. Our "other" cruise line was also Premiere -- the Big Red Boat. But how about a poll for which cruise line have you cruised the most? Our Thanksgiving cruise on the Zuiderdam will be the tie breaker in HAL's favor.

First one was Holland America -- Discovered I loved sailing.
Second cruise on Celebrity -- Really enjoyed that cruise line, had lots of fun. Third cruise on Renaissance which has left a bad taste in my mouth after being stranded by them in Istanbul.
Went back to HAL, which has now become our home, and is definitely our first favorite.

Besides the obvious (HAL), I also marked 'other' for 2 (now defunct) Lines - Royal Viking (wonderful) and Premier "The Big Red Boat" (shudder - the only cruise where the first thing I did upon arriving at the first port was to locate a TA to find out about airfares back to FL).

As a single person my first cruise was in the Greek Islands & Turkey on the "Orion" in 1970... It may have been the Helenic Cruise Line, but can't be sure..Had a fantastic time on that cruise..

I worked in (& retired from) the Airline Industry & had a difficult time trying to sell a cruise to my DH & our good friends, who also were Airline employees.. Finally after a hard sell, we all went on the "Southwind" a Norwegian-Caribbean Ship in 1983.. What a wonderful cruise that was..We had the best Waiter & Bus Boy in the industry..Our friends & DH were hooked on cruising after that..Since then have been on NCL three times & it will be 5 times on HAL after our trans-atlantic on the "Westerdam".. Hal is much more Chic than NCL..We enjoy having the same table-mates & waiters for the entire cruise, and do not care for Open Seating!

Other lines include: Royal Viking, Home Lines, Sitmar, Chandris, Premier, Dolphin, Italian Line, and Eastern Cruise Line. 57 cruises total. Favorite line is Silversea, and favorite ship current sailing is probably QM2. Our first experience was Premier (The Big Red Boat), and for all that can be said negatively about that ship, it did serve to get us hooked on cruising. Since that time, we've been on Regency, MSC, Carnival, Royal Olympic, NCL, Celebrity and HAL. As I've stated on another thread, variety seems to be the spice of life for us and we will probably continue to try different lines. That being said, however, we'd do another HAL or Celebrity in a New York minute. Can't say the same for the others.

Next on the agenda, ..., GCT's Vienna to Amsterdam on the River Adagio in October, 2004.

Candy asked about the old Seawind Crown. We had a great cruise on her several years ago from Aruba thru the southern Caribbean. I believe she was the old Vasco DiGama, originally built to run from Lisbon and Spain around Africa to India and back. We had a really good time on that old ship. The new ones are marvelous, but the old ones were fun too. It's a bit sad when a ship that you have enjoyed goes to the breakers or just fades away.

She had been put up for auction a few years back and Doug recently posted that, sadly, she ended up being sold for scrap.

Sad news for me, because one of our favorite Southern Caribbean cruises was on the old girl.

Welcome back, Teencruiser. Hope you had a wonderful time.

I remember before your cruise you asked about formal wear for your brothers. How did it go?

Would you do us the favor of posting some comments about your cruise. It is so often we comment about teens on ships but very rare when we have the chance to hear from a teen about their perspective.

It would be great IMO if you would tell us a little of your impression of your cruise.

Thanks if you think you will do that.

10 out of 12 cruises on Carnival (don't hit me with sticks :D )

First cruise on a Pacquet ship (don't remember the name), similar to S7S's Destiny cruise. TOTAL DISASTER. A transition cruise from LA to Vancouver. arrived at port, L A Sheriff's Dept had the ship locked down, arrested the entire band, left port hours late and everything went downhill from there. Incredible food, however. In Vancouver I told my wife I'd never ever get on a cruise ship again.

Carnival Tropicale - 3
Carnival Jubilee - 3
NCL Seaward - 1
Carnival Elation - 2
Carnival Glory - 1
Carnival Pride - 1

Considering either the Carnival Spirit or one of the Vista-class HAL ships (same hull) for my next cruise either this fall or early Spring. :D

I can go more expensive than that. My "other" was a tiny line consisting of one 24-foot Pacific Seacraft cruising sailboat named Saturday Clothes. Besides the payments, insurance and maintenance, it cost over $200 a month just for the hole in the water to put it in. Had lots of fine cruising experiences, including dog going overboard, propeller fouled by kelp, waking up to an inch of ice on the deck, boarding by the Coast Guard, and being broadsided by a canoe full of Boy Scouts. My last cruise featured torrential rain while going through the Crittenden Locks in Seattle on the first of August. The line is no longer in operation. The boat was sold to a nice couple in Japan who had it shipped home on a freighter.

Sailed on Dolphin, NCL and Royal Caribbean. Didn't care too much for Royal Caribbean but I think it was because I wasn't too impressed with Bermuda and we were both seasick most of the time. Cruised on the SS Norway (NCL). I broke down and cried when it was time to leave the ship (best vacation of my life). Since I couldn't find a Caribbean cruise on NCL, my TA recommended HAL. She said with my tastes I would probably prefer HAL over NCL. I have 8 long months to daydream about it (which is half the fun).

We've been on Chandris (renamed as "Celebrity"), HAL and Windjammer Barefoot Cruises. The old Chandris boat was the Galileo which was the sister ship to the Achille Lauro. The Galileo was an old tub of a boat, but they had really nice service. Every morning there was a white tablecloth buffet out on the main deck, ice sculptures and all. No cafeteria lines on that ship.

The Windjammer Fantome was a great old sailing ship. Every time they raised the sails, they would play "Amazing Grace" and slip out of port. Accomodations were horrible, so we slept on deck under the stars. Fortunately, what they lacked in cabin amenities they made up for in rum drinks.

But funny thing, those cruises cost as much as a trip on HAL...

Very nice....very nice indeed! Thanks.

PS: I wonder what the members would say is the most beautiful ship they have ever sailed....for me, the most beautiful contemporary ship I have ever seen is the SS Norway. At l,038 feet long with that sweeping hull design, she was a sight to behold.

The Dolphin, Premier's Majestic, Carnival's Mardi Gras, Crown Cruise Line's Crown Jewel and Crown Monarch, OdessaAmerica's Gruziya, Regency's Regent Rainbow, Carnival's Fantasy, Royal Caribbean's Nordic Empress, and the Zaandam (#two trip on her is booked).

How I have wished over the years that Crown Cruise Lines still existed (it ceased operating in the mid to late nineties). For me, the Jewel, Monarch and Dynasty were the most beautiful ships sailing. However, I'm happy again: now I have HAL!

Just Got back from a 10 day cruise on Princess Dawn.(Oct.14th)
Got a great deal on the price.
First time with Princess, 7 with HAL, 4 with RCCL, 3 with Carvinal, 5 with Windjammer, and a few other lines.
I really enjoyed the Princess Dawn. Very nice ship and the service was super.
BUT. I think I will stay with HAL.
I missed the little things HAL has that Princess did not have.
Like free popcorn at the movies.
Appitiers before dinner in the bars.
Better selection of food in the buffet.
Fresh flowers everywhere.
Bigger state rooms on HAL.
Dont get me wrong If I can find another super deal with Princess like this past cruise I will jump at it.
A cruise is what YOU make it to be.(I always have fun)
But there is something to be said about HAL that will keep me coming back.

Holland America, Statendam, last week! Wonderful overall, one or two things could have been better but there was a definite language barrier with our room steward.

Princess, Pacific Princess, 1997.....NEVER again on Princess. Too many problems to list and they flat out TOLD us to our faces, WE DO NOT CARE.

Queen Odyssey, dear departed Royal Cruise Lines...perfection on the seas.

Next time....I think HAL again. It fits what I'm looking for in a cruise line at an affordable price point. I don't go for Freestyle, Partayboat, or Family-friendly cruising at all.

The others are: the ship Brittanis (Chandris) and the Olympia Voyager (Royal Olympic Cruises) and we did a cruise on a wooden sail boat (with diesel engine) along the Turkish a Greek Mediterian. That cruise was wonderfull, but the boat was terrible.
We had to sleep on deck, because the "cabins"were to small and there was a terrible diesel smell.
So everone took a sunbading matras and sheet and slept on deck.
We also took a (sald water) shower on deck, because it was to small in the "bathroom. To only thing we tried to do, was going to your own "toilet".
The cruise was realy wonderfull but again the ship was awfull and unsave.

Pearl Cruise Lines
Ocean Cruise Line
Royal Cruise Line
Bermuda Star Line (back in the 50's)
American President Line (back in the 50's)
Canadian Pacific Cruises (back in the 50's)
Matson Lines (back in the 50's)

This is probably dating myself (and my pocket-book), but oh well.... here goes......

Regency (4)
Commodore (1)
Dolphin (2)
NCL (4)
Carnival (1)
Celebrity (1)

Planning first trip on HAL Zuiderdam for Easter of 2005.

I hope I'm not a jinx...... 50% of the lines I've traveled on have gone bankrupt! ;)

First the bankrupts: 7 days each aboard Regent Sun,and Dolphin's Oceanbreeze, 14 on Premier's Rembrandt.
76 days with Holland America
49 days on Princess
14 days on Royal Caribbean
7 days with Celebrity
Next cruise: 11 days on MSC's Opera.
We've never been on a cruise we did not thoroughly enjoy, however we prefer the newer mid-size ships.

Georgic: White Star Line 1951
Started in 1989 with Rotterdam, since then:
HAL 150 days (trying them again after 3 years)
Celebrity 153 days (can't get enough)
Princess 109 days (20 days I would rather have spent elsewhere)
RCCL 24 ok but no reason to go back yet
NCL 12 (more than enough but the Eastern Med was was worth it)

Coming up: Celebrity 15 day to Hawaii (Dec), Veendam 14 day Tampa (Jan), Zenith 14 day JAX (Feb), Galaxy 25 days (May), Constellation, 15 days (Sept)...
I guess I'm addicted.... Frequency and choice indicates what we believe to be the best cruise line but have not tried Carnival (rumours) and $$$$$ lines.

OTHER:

Admiral - Stardancer in the late 80s
Renaissance - R4 2000
Radisson - can't remember the ship's name; was only a short 3-day teaser
The Stardancer was my first cruise and I was hooked. There should be a buyer's beware statement about your first cruise leading to a serious addiction. :D :D :D

In addition to all but a few that we checked, the "others" are Regency and Admiral. We have 39-cruises behind us and are now booked on the Westerdam's Mediterranean Cruise for May 22, 2005. Come on May!

And the changes are not necessarily for the better. What happened to those wonderful days when we could sit out on a padded deck chair as the steward wrapped us up in a cosy blanket and served us delicious hot bouillon?

What happened to the wonderful afternoon teas when the tuxedoes and white gloved stewards served us delicious scones and clotted cream along with other goodies?

What happened to the entertaining pre dinner concerts, the string quartets, the instrumental soloists and the trained operatic singers?

Oh, for the good old days.

I checked the other box because I was a passenger on a cruise ship called the S.S. Lurline. I think it belonged to the Matson Line.
Joan,
I wonder if we cruised at the same time. I cruised in October 1962 from Hawaii to California.

I sailed on the Lurline from San Francisco to Honolulu in July of 1953. The return trip on the Lurline was to Los Angeles in August of 1953.

Does anyone remember the Prudential Grace Line ? My first cruise was a 15 day out of NYC in Jan. 1969. I believe the ship was the Santa Rosa. It was the last American flagged passenger to sail on the East coast and that trip was the last one she sailed. I was hooked totally. Next was the Rotterdam in 1973 and some 50 cruises since. 16 on NCL until our last one in May 1998. So bad, we never went back. Cruise mostly on HAL and Cunard. I 'm going on the Seven Seas Mariner in Feb. as my Navigator cruise was cancelled this week due to a fire on board. Can't wait !!!!!!!
