I understand they will swipe a card at check in and will hold an amount per day for onboard expenses. .....

Do they charge the card when the account reaches a certain amount, or sharge it all at the end? If I provide a card, can I also give them cash or Traveler's Checks to use first? Or can I go near the end of the vacation and give them Traveler's Checks to cover the amount?

Once they have the information from your credit card in their computers, their systems keeps track of all of your shipboard purchases and then bills your credit card in one bill at the end of the cruise. You will receive a statement under your door on the last day of the cruise that outlines all of the things you are being charged for. In the end you can decide to leave this bill on your credit card to pay when you get home or you can take care of it prior to leaving the ship with cash or travellers cheques.

It is my understanding, and I'm sure this is correct, but I think it is, that on HAL they will preapprove your card for $60 per day pp, then they charge to your account what you actually used but you can choose to pay in cash. I'm not sure if you tell them up front that you are using cash if you have to make a deposit or not. I'm sure you do but I'm not sure what it is. Sorry I can't help any more than that.

HAL will ask for a credit card at the begining of the cruise. $60 per person per day is "held" to cover HAL's charges.

You can use traveler's checks, cash, or leave everything on the charge card. You can use the cash or traveler's checks anytime in your cruise to pay off the account. Any new charges will continue to be added to your bill.

Don't forget that HAL is now automatically putting $10 per person per day for tips onto the accounts.

And if you have any shipboard credits, they can be used towards the tips since they will also appear on the same account.

We were not charged (our card) until 6 days after we were home. Unusual for HAL, but true this summer.

That is unusual Grannynurse. Wonder why it took them that long.

You can put a deposit against your account (in effect a prepaid deposit) at any stage during your cruise with cash or traveler's checks and then just have them charge what ever balance remains to your credit card. If you leave your credit card in place, you will not have to do anything at the last day of your cruise in terms of payment as any balance owed would automatically be billed to your credit card. That will save you having to go to the office and wait in what can be a long line.

If you expect your bill to be $400 and you put $350 down against it by cash or travelers checks, HAL will only bill your credit card $50. Or, once you get your preliminary bill, you could pay that off and then only have them charge whatever bills you incur during your last day on the cruise.
