On our last HAL cruise I had chilled strawberry soup for the very first time. I loved it more than words can describe. Had it at lunch one day and was thrilled to see it on the dinner menu a few days later.
It's like having dessert before the main course ... which can sometimes be a really good idea!!! :)

Above and beyond items that satisfy the 'sweet tooth' I recommend any of the broiled fish, lamb and venison dishes. I find the hot soups thickened with a tad too much cornstarch or arrowroot but the chilled blender fruit soups are great IMO.
'Hats off' to all the exec chefs, sous chefs and prep cooks aboard all the HAL ships! (My mouth is also watering while reading this list.)

Carol,
The chocolate croissants are always on a tray with other danish and breakfast rolls in the area where they put out the continental breakfast in Lido. Look for large trays of pastries and you will find mini chocolate croissants..... made with bitter sweet chocolate. Wonderful!

Carol, they do also have them in the Lido, but depending on when you go up there they can run out. So I make sure they send a few to my cabin before everyone descends on the Lido and devours them:D .

I'm drawing a blank because we do not visit the late night buffet. Can you describe them in more detail besides having "perfect heat"? Indonesian noodles are usually Bami Goreng but I do not recall ever seeing that offered on HAL

I will say we were disappointed in the cookies (dry, tasteless, no sweetness at all) this last cruise in April on Oosterdam...the time before that they were wonderful....hopefully it was just a bad week... anybody know???

Most of these have been listed, but they were my favorites:
* Warm raisin buns - perfect for breakfast with some fruit and we often took a couple up to the room for a late-night snack on the veranda.
* All the chilled fruit soups - as good as any I've ever had.
* Bread pudding - not quite as good as Mom's but it's close. And it's there everyday in Lido so it quickly becomes a yummy daily habit.
* Lemon Drop Martinis - OK, I can get these anywhere but they are still a favorite. I like to be sure to have one in every bar on board, but always end up back at the Ocean Bar. So comfy and so pretty. If you aren't a martini fan, then try a Mojito. Of course, you should sample the Wang Wang!
* Fresh fruit magically appearing in my room everyday.
* Almost any dish containing shrimp. At least on the Alaska cruise, the shrimp was large and well-prepared.
* Don't pass up the appetizers! Often, people at our table enjoyed the appetizers even more than the main courses. My nephew would order 3 appetizers and pass up the entre.

Copper........ You don't remember when Bami Goreng was a regular item on all HAL cruises? It always appeared at dinner at least one night and I LOVED that dish. They took it off the menu about 2 or so years ago and I sorely miss it. They now offer Nasi Goreng (rice instead of noodles) and that just doesn't do it for me. Once in a great while we get lucky and see Bami Goreng in Lido at lunchtime but it is rare. :( One of my all time favs......

We have an Indonesian restaurant here in Albany that is owned by a guy who was a Chef on HAL for many years. We had his Bami Goreng last night for dinner.
We had the Bami Goreng last year when one side of the Lido was serving an Indonesian lunch buffet. I remember years ago they would do that every cruise, so I was happy to see it back that day.

My husband had the Bami Goreng at lunchtime in the dining room. We were on an Alaskan cruise and it showed up on Friday (the last full day before departure) -- we were on a back-to-back, so he ate it twice. We never saw it at night or anywhere else.
My favourite drinks are the margarita and tropical cable car -- I make them both regularly.

I love chocolate. But the few times that I have had this dessert, there was barely a spoonful of mousse -- and the white chocolate hat -- too hard to break apart and eat. Which meant it was left behind - we saw many people leave the hat behind - waste of white choclate. JMO

Those are Dutch and called "poffertjes" They look like tiny pancakes. In contrast with pancakes, poffertjes are turned before one side is completely done, which results in a much softer core than pancakes have. Typically, poffertjes are served with "poedersuiker" (powdered sugar) and butter.
They are not hard to prepare but a special pan is needed. This is a special cast-iron or copper pan with several shallow indentations in the bottom. In large restaurants in Holland, special plates are often used to prepare them. Restaurant chefs are quite skilled in turning the almost baked poffertjes with a fork.

db777,
Oosterdam cookies this past year were up for discussion here. Everyone returning, at least cookie afficionados, would report back that they had not improved. I did speak to someone at our B2B luncheon about them. Sorry can't remember the name, but I know Lisa would. Anyway his comment was, "all this food and all they worry about is the cookies!" He did promise to do better.
The cookies on Ryndam this past summer were better, but still not up to their old recipe. I don't know what happened.

We love cookies, more than most other desserts... on other cruises we would have them bring us cookies and milk at bedtime and sit out on the balcony eating them...true comfort food....but we did not have that on the Oosterdam as they were not tasty... JUST back from 15 days on the sea and I have to say the cookies are NOT at all what they used to be.............am I sounding like and "old" person..............I really DO mean it, though. The cookies used to call to me. Luckily, this time they didn't even LOOK good............flat and always chocolate chip until the last two days when they had those nut ones. Only one type out ever..........
All of the things mentioned............yum!
Be sure you don't miss the stir fry at lunch in Lido........twice we had Szechuan Shrimp and they were HUGE.
No one has mentioned Cappaccino (sp?) Bombe for dessert......cap. ice cream with little crunchies in it, dipped in dark, dark chocolate and frozen. It's a big, round ball and the chocolate is thick. A couple of years ago we all went so gaa-gaa about it that our waiter said we could have it any time we wanted. In 14 days, I think we had it five or six times.
The club sandwich on the Room Service menu is delicious........really, really good.
Any Indonesian choice on the menu............go for it. Sometimes they have them in the DR at lunch; I try to check the DR menu just in case.
You can order a baked potato with any dinner; it's just not mentioned much. They are good.
The veggies were ALWAYS PERFECT. I don't know how they can steam veggies for so many people and not have them too well done; they were always sort of crispy........and delicious. Summer squash, asparagus, broccoli, pea pods. Often at lunch I'd have fruit and veggies.
On this cruise, the beef was amazingly wonderful. I'm not a beef eater but DH is and most at our table ordered it often.
You can pick up the raisin bread if they're out of the buns and have it toasted near the end of the line where they are making eggs, etc. Their raisin buns and bread are DELICIOUS. One time they had raisin bread French Toast. I got a piece with NO berry sauce just so I could savor the raisin bread..........oh, was it good.
Be sure to try breakfast and lunch at least once in the D.R.
We DID have those tropical sundaes on the Mexican Riviera part of our back-to-back.
They always had sugar free coffee ice cream in Lido but you had to ask for it if it wasn't listed; it's delicious and creamy.
People rave about the hamburgers at the outside grill (by the pool)....
there's just not enough time to try it all!! The fries, the nachos, the guacamole, the pizzas there always looked delicious.
And, be sure to read to the bottom of the dessert menu. You can add a cappaccino (or decaf one) to your dessert; no additional charge as in the Explorations Cafe.:)
HAVE A GRAND TIME.

I would love to try the stir fry which everyone raves about, but I can't have soy sauce and that's the only way they make it. I asked if they could do it without, but the answer was no can do. Oh well. There's so much else to eat and eat and eat.:)

I will say, though, that the cookies on the Prinsendam in July were better than what I've had on other ships in the last couple of years.
Don't know if it had something to do with the pastry chef on that ship, or if all the recipes have been changed throughout the line.

It seems to me that they did change when they did away with the Java Cafe. They cookies were moist, chocolaty, chewy and delicious. They now are dry, hard, few chips and yucky. JMHO

I guess we're fortunate that we're new to HAL...so we don't have great expectations for the cookies.

Kakalina, JMHO too....they used to have those macadamia nut cookies in the Java cafe. I used to get one before a movie, but dont see them any more. (Not that I am complaining about a lack of food...)

This summer, on Maasdam, I noticed for the first time they had a notice in the daily program stating HAL avoids trans-fats. I don't remember the exact verbage but it definitely gave the impression it referred to frying in trans-fat free oils. I think Ruth may be right the difference in the cookies could be the use of ingredients that do not contain trans-fats. They add flavor and shelf life....while taking away our arteries lives. :(
I really do find them tasty and enjoy the treat of someone baking fresh cookies for me daily. :)

The cookies we had on the Prinsendam last December were delicious. I would pop into the Java Cafe from time to time and grab one. They sure disappeared fast!!!:) I wonder if they vary ship to ship because I really consider myself pretty particular about chocolate chip cookies:D .

I'm drawing a blank because we do not visit the late night buffet. Can you describe them in more detail besides having "perfect heat"? Indonesian noodles are usually Bami Goreng but I do not recall ever seeing that offered on HAL
Bami Goreng is a regular on the late night buffet, usually at the end of the cruise & often on the last night (on our cruises anyway). It is served with chicken & pork sate & is usually very good. It is far spicier than most North Americans would like. I often wondered if it was the cooks' revenge at the end of the cruise or if the crew were hoping the passengers would not eat it so that they could!
Last month on the Ryndam, I stood & looked at it on the last night. I wanted it, but after late dinner I just could not quite manage it. For those that like Asian or spicy food, it is worth looking out for.
ENAK SEKALI / delicious.

I LOVE Bami Goreng and have missed it on the dining room menu. We never go to the late night buffet and this is the first I heard they serve Bami. I will be checking daily to find out when they are going to serve it and go very light on my dinner so I'll have an appetite for a dish of Bami Goreng. Thank you so much for posting this.
Can't wait for our return to Maasdam and here's still another reason to be eager!!

I have looked for "wang wang" in the book placed on the tables in the various lounges and have never seen it listed. Why??
They used to be in those books but were taken out about a year and a half to two years ago. Don't know the reason why. Ask your bar waiter or bar tender for one. They will know

I love chocolate. But the few times that I have had this dessert, there was barely a spoonful of mousse -- and the white chocolate hat -- too hard to break apart and eat. Which meant it was left behind - we saw many people leave the hat behind - waste of white choclate. JMO
Maybe they didn't think it was edible. I ate mine. This is the underside of one of them.

Things I liked on the last HAL cruise (which was a long one)
We had most of our meals in the main dining room rather than the buffet. They often had breakfast specials such as:
Grilled Brockwurst, hominy grits and two eggs
Chocolate Chip French Toast
Cranberry Pancakes
I worked my way through the breakfast menu - one morning I had the Belguim waffles

Your photo of the creme brulee starts me salivating!
I was trying to explain to someone on our cruise last week just WHY they needed to order it. I drew the special dish on the tablecloth with my finger and explained what was in each section, even.:p For some reason, that dish, made just for three flavors, was exciting to me
BUT
the flavor of the desserts..........you just can't explain it.

The white chocolate hat used to be so hard that attempts at cutting it resulted in one half shooting off across the dining room at high velocity, to the detriment of any unsuspecting passers-by. The other half would hit you on the chest & leave chocolate stains down the front of your formal clothes.
Now they make the chocolate much thinner, hence easier & safer to eat.

I also recall that Bami Goreng was offered at the Indonesian Buffet on our Noordam cruise. They set the buffet out near the Lido pool and it had all my Indonesian favorites!!

:D Seems to me that a 'Brit' table setting, fork and spoon for dessert, is definitely required for many desserts......Brits use the fork to 'anchor' (hold in place) the dessert and the spoon to eat it with!:)
I confess (after 40+ years in Canada) to having a problem with the North American 'fork only for dessert' service!.......that the chocolate (or whatever) shell splinters and shoots off my plate is embarrassing!:( With a fork and spoon, I'm in control! ......I hope!:) Anyone agree?

Thanks for all those delicious pictures grandma Rosalie!! It's great to see how things are presented (like the crab legs are split for you!) and the portion sizes.
Have you - or anyone - tried the no sugar added desserts? I saw a few in the pics but not sure if they were yours or not. If they're good, I'll have them once in a while cause there's no way I'm not having dessert every night!!:D
Thanks!

I think one of the best things was the portions that were not too large.
Yes we did try the sugar free desserts. I thought they were good. Basically if the dessert was one that I wanted, I ordered it regardless of whether it was sugar free or not. One of our table mates was diabetic, but I don't recall that he ate any of them. Or at least he didn't make a big point of eating them.

Thank you for all your photos, GrandmaR! As they say, "a picture is worth 1000 words!" I tried some of the sugar free desserts last time, and they were very good.

We are just off the Volendam. The food was generally very good especially the beef. Hilights were prime rib, sirloin and lamb shanks. Generally the seafood was overcooked and tough.
What I love about breakfast in the Lido is the smoked salmon and capers. I had that almost every day. Probably too much sodium for me but what a treat! And they have plain yogurt not the sugary nasty stuff!

GrandmaR, the pictures are absolutely amazing. I've sometimes taken pictures of my dishes onboard, but they never come out so beautifully!
Were the Lobster Medallions in the Pinnacle or the main dining room? I don't remember those on the menu and they look amazing!

Thank you - I've been practicing taking pictures of my food for a couple of years. It's not hard, but you have to have enough light to focus.
The lobsters were in the main dining room on Christmas. I wrote:
At dinner, I had Lobster Medallion Parisenne for an appetizer - the lobster was in chunks on a half lobster shell (lengthwise). Bob had Hazelnut Crusted Camembert which I didn't think he would like. [and I was right, because he doesn't really like cheese] We had to have turkey for dinner of course. Bob had the Santa Sundae, and I had the "Happy Holiday" Chocolate Box for dessert.
We went to the Pinnacle Grill the following night.
Then they served us with a tiny plate of appetizers before the regular appetizers - one shrimp, a tiny little quiche and something in a spoon that I'm not sure what it was. I had the Dungeness Crab Cakes for the regular appetizer. There were two of them - each about the size of a tater tot.
Bob had the King Salmon as his entree and I had the smallest cut of beef they had which was a Filet Mignon Petite Cut. It was about 3" thick and about 3" in diameter. We both ordered asparagus as a side, but I also ordered spinach which was something of a mistake because it was too much to eat. It came with a cheese crisp - it was as if they had grated some cheese on a grill and then scraped it off and cooled it so that it was a potato chip consistency, but was all cheese. It was very good.
Before dessert, they brought a tiny tray with 6 chocolates on it. I had the creme brulee, which was in three sections - one was chocolate, one was coffee and one was regular vanilla. I had so much dinner that I couldn't eat it all even as much as I love creme brulee.

We were on the Maasdam, and I totally hated the way the buffet was set up and never ate there by choice - only if the main dining room wasn't open. The food was fine, it just required too much standing in line to get to it. We ate breakfast and lunch in the main dining room most of the time.
Of course if we WERE there for lunch, we had bread pudding regardless of what else was there.
