I just discovered that I can play all my music that's on the ipod through my computer. While my new computer is a mess, and I have yet to figure out all the programs(and no, I don't have vista) just programs that have been updated from 7 years ago)the quality of the sound is fabulous and I love it. Peggy(Cruznon) Thanks again for all the help you gave me this summer.

P.S. I'm supposed to be packing for an overnight to Phili but can't decide what to take. I need a packing thread for one night.

Congratulations - I know what you mean.

Two laptops - one with Windows XP and the other with Vista.

I still have no idea of what is going on at times.

Yikes, glad to hear someone else is as confused as I am. I have word perfect from corel and it opens in blue with white background and in spite of a ton of advice, I can't change it to white background. I can't open any of my documents in word. And my business program, Quickbooks has become so sophisticated that I can't figure out how to get a profit and loss statement because there are so many options. Thankfully, the man who copied it all over for me is coming back friday and he can have the fun of fixing it all and then teaching me.Otherwise, I'll have to retire.

However, most important, no trouble getting cruise critic boards. Grateful for small things.

Is it possible to still buy a new laptop with Windows and not Vista or must one get Vista now? Talking new computers......not used.

DH just got a new laptop with Vista, but you can get it without. Take a look on the Dell site and see what they have. Good luck. I know people who dislike Vista which is why I didn't get it. I'll be ok as soon as I learn my new programs which have nothing to do with the operating system.

Better yet buy a mac, and enjoy a simple to use virus free life.

I second the advice for a MAC--we have both at home; DH uses a PC, and I have a MAC. I like mine much better! Very user friendly, little chance of viruses, and almost no spam in my email.

FYI- no home desktops or laptops will be sold with XP after Jan 2008. Business desktops/laptops will continue to have XP until 2009. Once Vista releases service pack 1 it should be ok (XP had issues too until the first service pack patched most of the problems).

Sail -

Having both XP and Windows Vista (business) I HIGHLY recommend XP over Vista! You can still get it too - email me if you want specifics, we usually always buy Dell products, but I'm seriously leaning towards an Apple.

I do not like Vista - it uses too much memory and always has "stuff" running in the background. I also have MS Office 2007 (at work), which is so different from Office 2003...

Carol -

We load all our CD's (ones where we like most all tracks) to PC and download them to the ipod. I can also download tracks directly from CD to ipod.

I also subsrcibe to a "different" software (other than itunes) for my kids that allows unlimited downloads for $39.99 per year - a great money saver. You have to download to itunes and then to the ipod, but I figure they have plenty of time on their hands, lol!!!!

I actually prefer Vista. Besides Cruise Critic is just as good with Vista as with XP. However, my XP laptop will be cruising with us while Vista stays home. Two ducks and a rat will also be with us, but they just sit in the window and don't use the laptop.

I second (or third) the Mac idea. We just got a Mac a few weeks ago after having PCs forever. Just switching users takes 1 second instead of 30. Everything is in the monitor - the drives, the speakaers, the USB ports (there's one in the keyboard too), just pop a CD/DVD into the side of it...really cool! Plus, no more crawling around and trying to reach behind the cpu to plug something in, cause there is no separate cpu. I love this MAC, the monitor quality is excellent, it has pretty decent built in speakers, no needing special software to watch a DVD, etc. And things download so much faster.

Since you are getting to be more familiar with your ipod, may I suggest that you download the Ipod Art Tour for your February sailing aboard the Noordam? The tours are self-guided, ship specific, and can be done at your own pace. It is fun to get some of the background on the art that we enjoy on the Holland America ships. Each ship's tour can be downloaded from I-tunes or from this link on the Holland America site:

http://www.hollandamerica.com/onboard/podcast.do

I've heard that some ships now have the ipod tours available onboard, but, to be safe, it is best to download before leaving home.

Happy Sailing

Yes ... buy a MacBook or MacBookPro ... they come with OS X.4 -- tomorrow night they'll start coming with OS X.5. :D

If you buy a Windows laptop you'll have to downgrade to XP ... which means buying another copy of XP (and, of course, giving Microsoft 2 licensees for 1 purchaser ... which artificially further inflates their market share).

I loved the ipod art tour on the Zuiderdam and highly recommend this great addition to your cruise.

If any of you ipod people also like to listen to books, check out Audible.com. For a monthly fee you can download two full length novels each month. The selection of books is amazing no matter what you like to read. I can plug mine into my car stereo as well as my computer and the books make commuting to work a great part of every day. And listening to a great book while sitting on my HAL balcony lets me watch the scenery and listen at the same time. Life is good.

Yes you can. Here is some info:

Though I agree with the others about buying a Mac. Hoping my copy of Leopard arrives tomorrow! I am proud to use an OS that never crashes.

Sail I know if you order from Dell, used the small business/home business option and it allows you to chose Windows Xp or Vista. If you use home it makes you get Vista. I just bought my mother and stepfather a computer that way, and my dad's computer a couple months ago.

Greg, last laptop I got to share with DW was a Dell, and its not bad, but i got it with XP, didnt want to chance Vista because of my Nikon photo software and photoshop. Next laptop is going to be a macbook...I love my mini, but I need something more portable :)

Not sure what you guys are talking about. Is it the fact that usually the last post of the previous page appears at the top of the next page and it hasn't been doing that lately?

Not sure what you guys are talking about.
Carol, sometimes I see that the last poster's reply doesn't appear so I can read it. Other times when I refresh the screen, after reading several posts, one of the ones I've read remains in bold. When I look, I'll see that the reply count is off, and it's always a post that starts a page that's missing. Sometimes it's the first two on the page!

I'll click on the last posters name and check out their recent posts.
Then I can read the first line of whatever they attempted to add to the thread.
Then I (or whoever got there first) posts another reply and it seems to clear out the logjam.

Anybody have any issues when trying to download the HAL art podcasts? I have a MAC and I couldn't do it. When I clicked on the download link (Zuiderdam), a new window opened up with tons of gibberish text, but theaddress bar said it was downloading. After about 3 minutes, I got the spinning color wheel and all my internet windows forze and I had to force quit. Opened Safari/internet again, tried it again, same result and had to force quit.

You may also try to do it from Itunes, I downloaded the Oosterdam tour today from there with no problems.

That worked - thanks! I just searched Holland America art and it came up (along with a kid's praise and worship album, which I thought was pretty funny considering the search terms!)

Looking forward to checking out the ship via the art.:)

Hey OldCodger73,

Open iTunes on your computer, click on the Itunes Store (on the menu down the left side), then search 'Holland America'. The result should be under 'podcasts' on the top section of the screen (you'll have to scroll down). Click on the picture of the Holland America ship and then all of the ship's individual podcasts should be listed on the bottom section of the screen. They can be downloaded into your Itunes library for free from there.

I hope this works for you! :)

jjb, thanks for the information. I'll try it later today. It should work. I previously had a 2Gen 20GB iPod that was totally full of music so didn't bother to deal with podcasts. Now that I have an 80GB iPod Classic I thought to give it a try.

Carol, regarding post 14 I did try that and got the gobbly-gook page with weird symbols.

if you don't want to take a laptop with you on the cruise to upload the pictures from your digital camera every day, you can do the same thing with an iPod. Just buy the connector from Apple for $29.99 and you can use the iPod to store all your pictures until you get home. More information from Apple is at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301059

However, from what I've read on several camera boards, the process is very slow and battery intensive, both for the iPod and your camera. It does work, though.

Does it save the photos at the same size as the original (i.e. is it a true copy, without compression or resizing)?

I'm ready to purchase the connector for my Ipod to store digital photos for our next two week cruise. What has been your experience with the photo quality? How slow is the process? Is is feasible to just download overnight? Then recharge & "good to go"?

Thank you as I am very interested in using my Ipod instead of taking my MacBook. We have been fans of Apple/Mac since the 80"s. PC's just OK for work but much prefer Mac for home use.
