If the hotel across the street from the Garden is the one I am thinking of, it's really not very nice (provide me with the name and I'll confirm if it's the one I am thinking of, just having a senior moment and can't remember!). I actually stayed there once overnight with a friend and the rooms were tiny, and could have desperately used some updating. I don't know much about hotels in Manhattan even though I am a native NYer--but there are definitely nicer places, have you looked on the hotels board? It would be easy to get to the Garden from almost anyplace; a number of subway lines and buses will take you door to door.
Go Knicks!:D

We've stayed at the Hotel New Yorker (Ramada chain) which is very near the garden (which is also Penn Station location) because we've had 6:00 am trains to catch. It's an old hotel and the rooms are not like the new ones, but it was fine for one night and very convenient. We go to the city by bus and could walk from the Port Authority to hotel (about 7 blocks).

I would advise looking on the following site for a hotel in NY...
www.tripadvisor.com (http://www.tripadvisor.com)
They have a great rating system and reviews. One thing to remember about a hotel in NYC, the rooms are very small for the price you are paying. Anything around Times Square/MSG will be more expensive than a hotel about a block away from these places. Remember everything in NYC is just a cab ride away:D

Happy hotel hunting.

Hi. There is a Holiday Inn on 32nd St and 6th Ave. (MSG is 33rd St and 7th Ave). I've never stayed there so I can't tell you about the rooms. The hotel you are talking about is really old and tired. I wouldn't pay $200 for one night. Sounds like they saw an easy mark when you called. There's a Comfort Inn on 35th St, between 5th and 6th Aveunes, but the rooms are small (i've stayed there overnight to catch a 6 am Metroliner). Good luck.

This is a very nice hotel. You should be comfortable there & it is conveneint to the game, plus not too far from the pier.
When whatever dog show is at Madison Sq. Garden is in town, they all stay there.

Problem with NYC Hotels:
Pay $90/night and get a tiny hotel room in an old building with 1 queeen bed and no facilities to speak of.
Pay $250/night and get a tiny hotel room in an old building with 1 queeen bed and no facilities to speak of...and nicer shampoo.
For economical but decent hotels try www.applecorehotels.com, they have the best selection of decent, economy hotels in NYC IMHO. I stayed at their La Quinta last trip to NYC for $89/night weekend (1/2 block from the Holiday Inn mentioned above) It was 1/2 a block from Macy's, 3-4 block walk to Penn Station (which incidentally is built underneith Madison Sq Gardens) Room was tiny (but will get you ready for the cruise) but pretty clean for NYC. MAKE SURE YOU GET A NON-SMOKING ROOM IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE SMELL OF SMOKE! On the edge of Little Korea, 3 blocks to Manhatten Mall, there's a Kmart by Penn Station for your last minute supplies. It's your basic 2* economy hotel room, but NYC has some definite 0* rooms too. One elevator was out but I was on 3rd floor so I just ran up the stairs most of the time. Roof bar was a bit of a dive with a $1,000,000 view of the Empire State Building. Oh and the elevator ride with the Transvesites was a definite NYC moment ;-)
I'd skip all the hotels right by Penn Station (The Pennsylvania in particular, as well as the HoJo's there) They are way overpriced for what you get, old and in desparate need of a reno.

I wouldn't stay in this hotel. I am very familiar with this hotel as I work in NYC and this hotel has quite a few conferences that I have attended. It is rather old and well worn. I don't think it is worth the money.

Go to price line.com, place a price for 100.00 and # of stars (hotel) you wish to stay so you dont end up with a dump....
They usually do pretty good.
Have fun....

Keep in mind that most NYC hotel rooms are in very old buildings and are usually small. Also, keep in mind that most hotels will charge you between $25 and $40 for parking...yes parking is not free. :(
There are a handful of hotels that offer free parking. One of them is the "Travel Inn" somewhere around 42nd street. Rooms are small but nice...and parking is free. Room charge is around $125 - $175 per night, depending on the time of year and day of week.
