Considering a cruise on the Oosterdam - wondering how it differs (or is the same) as Ryndam & Maasdam. Like their smaller ship feel.
thanks!

We've sailed on Ryndam, Maasdam and STatendam-and, we are very fond of all S class ships, but we have been on the OOsterdam twice now. We like the availability of balconies (V OR S categories). I do not feel the ship's size is an issue, because you will still find it feels very familiar to you in terms of layout, art collections. location of public rooms. I feel the crew and staff are just as well-trained, no lapses in service for us yet. I like the spa facility better on the Vista class. Food service seems to be comparable. I have not felt "crowded-out" on Vista class while boarding, or waiting for shore excursions. Vista classes are bigger ships--so if walking down corridors is a problem that is the only one that comes to my mind. Anything of specific concern to you? We do like some terminals-San Diego, Seattle, better than Fort Lauderdale, for example, for travel to and from and for ease of boarding.

My first two HAL cruises were on the Maasdam and Veendam. My third and fourth on the Zuiderdam and Oosterdam. In fact, I loved the Vista Class so much after cruising on the Zuiderdam, I came home and booked the Oosterdam for just a few months later. I like the Vista Class. Also, cruising from San Diego is a BREEZE.

Have sailed on all the ships mentioned here.

One big draw back is getting to the dinning room on the Vista class ships -- both levels -- can only get there via the starboard side of the ship. It can get very crowded at times.

Be prepared for much more walking on the Vistas!

Do you mean, if you are forward on the Promenade deck on the Maasdam and you're trying to get to the dining room, you have to go up (or down) first, and then aft and then back down (or up) again?

What is in that space fore of the lower dining room? Kitchens? It says Galley on one side (on the deck plans) but there are no markings on the starboard side.

That's exactly what is meant. On both the S- and R-class ships you cannot go from forward Promenade Deck to aft directly without changing decks. The R-class has the advantage that when you find yourself at midship you can use a staircase/elevator there without doubling back.

We are usually in the Ocean Bar.

Vista - starboard side to enter ding room -- always hate it when we have been to the Ocean Bar and then have to plow through everyone looking at all the pictures.
