View Full Version : Rotten Cabin!

Well we had a really rooten cabin! 5002....the only 2 front cabins on the floor. Directly behind the wall I was sleeping was where the anchor was!
The first time they anchored it was like world war 2! It started at 3.45am and contined until 6.30am in which our son woke screaming! He thought he was going to die! It was awful.....
Well if that wasnt enough it happened everyday therafter as we stopped each day. So finally on the on the Thurs night we went to bed at 8.30pm so we could sleep in as we were stuffed!
Went to the pursers desk to complain as our son (4 yrs) was having nightmares and wouldnt sleep. He would sleep in Turtle Cove but awaken as we got in the cabin. Seeing as were were full (400 kids onboard) there were not free cabins.
We had to put up with it! Basically they said "if its any consolation we sleep in the same area!" We told them " well your getting paid to sleep in it, we ARE NOT!" she was than quiet.
Anyway again yesterday we anchored in Willis Island all for 20 mins to be woken up again at 6am....This anchor noise is in 30 min incruements and continuiing grinding noises and banging. We went to bed at 11pm last night to be woken again with the same noise at 2.45am onwards till we got up at 5am....
So we are very tired....Going to be making a formal complaint about putting anyone with young people in such a cabin!
I will say though apart from this our cruising experience on the Pacific Star was AWESOME....in many other ways..
Just thought I would share with you NOT to have this cabin unless you dont want any sleep..

I would have been fuming too!! Did you know that this where the anchor was? Did the other neigbours complain about the noise?
It was lucky in a way, that it wasn't a longer cruise. You would have been sleeping virtually through the day and missing out on a lot of the ports due to tiredness.
Maybe we can start a 'Cabins to Avoid list' at the top as a sticky to warn others about such cabins.:)

Anissa, if you heard the noise this morning it must have been something other than the anchor, as they don't lower the anchor in Brisbane, the ship ties up. I guess there's lots of mechanical stuff in that area, so it could have been anything.

Anissa, did you book this category specifically, or was it an inside guarantee? Looking at the deckplans, it would be one I would want to avoid even before your recommendation.
Thanks for the warning

Hi Anissa, I'm sorry you had a bad experience in the cabin.
and feel for your small boy.
I have been in the outside cabin to you...04.... it was a cheap deal, (but I don't care where I am as long as I'm on the ship.)
there were chains rattling whenever we anchored, but the times you are quoting ..2.45 - 5am, could not be the anchor.
the problem is.. a ship does make noise when things are working...
even noise from the kitchen and laundry if you are near them.
I hope you let them know in your comment sheet.
kind regards, Lorraine:) :)

You can hear the anchor from many places... we were not in a cheap cabin nor a cheap deck and we still heard the ancho every morning simply because we were near the front of the ship. we were also directly underneath atlantis lounge so we heard every show twice plus BANG BANG at 4am every morning for their rehersals

Its horses for courses really.
You get what you pay for.
I know some will see this as hard but anybody who does not check in advance what their money is buying them gets little sympathy from me.
And that goes for everything in life - not just cruising.
Pay for a "budget" cabin - expect "budget" results. Save up a bit more and pay that little extra for a good cabin - expect better results.

I have to agree with you, we have paid for a "Cheap" cabin and could be anywhere on the ship, worst scenario is T grade, but I know that:)
For Tahiti I paid top dollar, no discounts and chose the category and cabin, if i dont get it then Iwill complain :D
Ships do make all sorts of creaking and groaning, its the sound of cruising, the old Fairstar was a noisy bugger:p

Absoluetely.
While I am sorry that Anissa had a bad experience, if somebody wants their experience to be good in respect to the standards experienced in their cabin, then they have to do a bit of research regarding where they want to be on their proposed vessel, and maybe pay extra money to ensure that.
If you don't get what you pay for - then you have cause for complaint.
What I do is similar to your Tahiti experience. I check out the deck plan, book the cabin that I want, and am willing to pay for it.
A little research goes a long way. Even in the best cabins, those near lifts sometimes get a bit noisy.
Moral here is take the time to check out the deck plans and possible problem areas near your choice, and then book "off the plan"

If you've got the extra $$$ and time, sit down and work out where you'd like to be. I know for some, it doesn't really matter, but I'd like to choose where I'll be.
For us it is important to be near the lifts for my mum. We also try and get Midships, even though it costs a little bit more.
We ring and ask what is available with our 'want' list, and choose from that.
The earlier you get in, the higher chance of securing your desired cabin.:)

I actually checked what cabins were available for our sun princess cruise and asked for those cabins.
While it is at the front of the ship(hope it is not near the anchor!!)it was the best at the time we could get. most had sold out.
I used the search feature on here and found out people who had stayed there who said these cabin were a little larger than most inside , there was a door leading outside a few steps from the cabin and wasnt nosiy although there are crew areas nearby.
it does pay to research, so maybe yes we could do a cabins to avoid thing.
sorry anissa your son had nightmares i hope it doesnt have any lasting effect

I do realise that we DONT anchor in Brisbane. We had a machinery room or whatever it is in the door next to us. I was very tired when I wrote this morning. Post seasickness. I get it each time. Hubby said I should think about not cruising..lol
As for I get what I pay for...Yes, to some extent but we booked 5 months ago and we paid full fare for our son when all the other children were travelling free (most of the 400) and we didnt pay a really cheap fare in comparison to others. We didnt find out the cabin till the week before or something and we couldnt change it! So we did get burnt but like I said apart from that we had a brilliant time!
Thought I would mention it as a warning to other NEW cruisers who dont know anything about the cabins etc...
As for the anchor........it really was noisy on the days we had a shore day and YES I checked with the right people and it was the noise of the anchor we could hear.
Thanks for your comments everyone! We are on the Pacific Sun in March (2 nights) and I have already emailed the travel agent re: cabins ahead of time this morning as we have 2 cabins together.
My son will be fine. I know he wants to cruise again! The whole experience of the Turtle Cove kids club made it worth it and we have learnt alot about cabins and cruising! Always a bonus

Will be able to let you know about the cabins up front on the Pacific Sun in a month, will probably be there unless the upgrade fairy comes:D
Last cruise on the Sun we were towards the back on upper, no problems there.

We had cabin P.170 (Plaza deck - forward of Purser/atrium) on RP..second from bow, outside, very noisy with big waves hitting the bow and noise from bow thrusters and anchor. Never again forward cabins for us.
Anissa..you also probably copped noise from the bow thrusters which are used to move the ship sideways.
So stay away from very forward cabins on PD as well.

Yes Jarrod, being forward was a nightmare the last few days on RP..massive thumps and bangs with the seas hitting the bow, Plaza Deck is deck 5 and was like being in a car wash that weekend 29/30 Sept. Decks were awash up to deck 7 Promenade deck and spray hitting lido deck up the top..smashed swim up bar windows and shower screens on lido deck.
All will be fixed for PD..!! 40 million $ later.!!
Cheers..Les..happy to back on terra firma. Glory to Australia

Hi,one cabin to definitely avoid on the Pac sun is U2-quite a spacious T grade cabin ,but V NOISY! directly under the anchor and also right next to a large metal door used by crew 24hrs a day-it slammed constantly making the walls shudder.also a long walk from the lifts especially during rough seas.Having said that,I didnt feel we could complain too much as we got a very cheap fare.wouldnt do it again though-would rather pay a bit extra and be closer to lifts in the centre

I pay extra to get the cabin I want midships outside cabin. I only book if that area is available. Too many horror stories about noises etc. plus movement of the ship. Hope you get some sleep and enjoy the rest of your experience.

1) Upgrade fairy
2) Upgrade fairy's godmother
3) Neptune (for smooth sailing)

Flatron..my mistake..typo..yes, had P.107 on Plaza Deck (5) forward, starboard side. Those couple of forward cabins have permanent queensize bed. Big space between window and cabin wall due to bow curvature, all too noisy with anchors, bow thrusters and seas hammering the bow..BANG, BANG she went.
Like all ships bow cabins are ok in calm seas but not in rough seas. Next time middle cabin for us.

Next time mid ships for us. ####SORRY FOR ALMOST DUPLICATE POSTS, CC PLAYING UP ?####
HEY..PHYSIEMUM, I notice you were on P & O Iberia in 1970, maybe same cruise as I was on as a 22 yr old, mid 1970, Sydney - Rabaul-Honiara-Suva-Sydney..met my wife on that cruise, true story. No ensuite bathrooms those days, think I was in a cabin of 4 on F deck, communal bathroom down the corridor.

Good luck with the upgrade. But if you don't get it, you will sure to have a wonderful time anyway.
Any one of us would rather be in one of the cheaper cabins - than be at home and going to work.
Enjoy the run up to your cruise, the anticipation and planning is nearly as much fun as the cruise itself. Nearly..... :)
I know we are totally ecstatic to see only 26 days left on our countdown. It is all such fun.
Have a great time.

Brenda, I have left a message for the travel agent as I also wanted to know why our son paid full fare and all the children onbaord did not! So I will be able to answer that one tomorrow.
We also had an email about the our cabins in March from the agent (we used a different one from Brisbane...much better service) and he said that we had been upgraded on the March one for the 2 nights. We have 2 cabins next door so apparently you can only have this not so midship but not so bad as to where we were last week. I know dif ship but as in location. U56 and 60.
He did tell me that we wouldnt have the sounds of the anchors and thrusters there like we did this time round. I am going to stick with this mob I think as they are very accomodating and I like there service.
As for the others travelling I would take earplugs...... BOY was it V noisy! Slept for almost 11 hours last night my husband and I did not look like we came home from a cruise! lol...we looked worst for ware although felt great for the fun and relaxation if you know what I mean????

Apparently, in some of the cabins at the back, there is a slight vibration. Maybe someone who has stayed in the rear can explain more.:)
I've stayed at the rear once, and it was fine. Though that was on a much larger ship and higher up.

We sailed on the Pacific Sun last year and were in E193 and it was fine. We didn't notice that much difference from our cruise in May when we were in E89.
The front of the ship sounds like a totally different story.
We wouldn't consider a front cabin as we both felt a bit seasick in the Atlantis lounge and also the duty free shop. We could only manage one show, and that was only for 10 - 15 minutes. :( We had to leave. We were fine as soon as we were up on deck.
Weird. :p
Phil was pleased that I felt queasy in the duty free shop. :D

Hi everyone - this is my very first post on CC...
I have been on the Star twice this year and was in the very back cabin each time (I travel on a VERY cheap fare and take what I can get - sometimes I'm surprised that I even get a cabin at all...)
In January I was in 5157 (the last cabin on Caribe deck). I found it to be a bit noisy but I was just happy to be onboard. One night I awoke to really loud noises and looked out the window to find that I was almost eyeball to eyeball with a tug boat captain.
In April I was in 6171 (the last cabin on Baja deck) and I found it to be pretty noisy too because a lot of "mechanical" action seemed to go on behind our cabin wall. That was the open area directly below the kids pool. And when it was a bit rough the water sloshed under the door at the end of the corridor so when we would walk out of the cabin door the floor was wet. It even had a patch of that outdoor type carpet that hurts your feet when you walk on it. My sister's cabin was 2 doors up and it was a lot less noisy.
I had a few sleepless nights on both cruises due to noise but when I look back on both the cruises now, I don't recall that bit - I only remember the good stuff... :)
My 7 year old son travelled with me on both cruises and he didn't even wake up from the noise once.
I'm travelling on the Dawn in January (again on a VERY cheap fare) and have no idea where I'll end up... but I don't really care...

Hi Les,yes my first cruise was on the Iberia in 1970,but I think it was early in the year.I also met my husband on this cruise,he was a crew member at the time and later emigrated out here. The accommodation in those days was certainly "no frills".I also had a 4 berth cabin on F deck(below the waterline!),with a long hike down the corridor to the bathrooms.Times have certainly changed-I didnt think twice then about sharing with 3 strangers and leaving my luggage unattended in the cabin-wouldnt recommend it these days
To all those worrying about the location of their cabins-dont let it spoil your holiday, you dont spend much time in there anyway.Any cabin is great if it gets you onto the ship!-Im addicted:p
