I just saw this opened for bookings on the HAL website. The date is August 29, 2008. It looks like a cruise with no ports. Does anyone know anything about this? The prices are steep, but HAL won't have any trouble selling these.

It looks like a Thursday, Friday, & Saturday night.

Thanks for finding that Jade. We can't take it but it sure sounds wonderful for people who want a quick cruise on the pretty new ship.

Are you booking it Jade?

I haven't spoken to DH yet. I can't reach him all day as he's in a kitchen cooking...I am sure he'll tell me I'm nuts.

I always said I would only book for the itinerary but DH recently said he prefers the ship. Do you think the ship just circles around New York harbor for 3 nights? Will it mostly be TA's and VIP's?

Labor Day weekend may be a problem, maybe not.

Why not? Will you be on the Maasdam?

Yes...... we will still be on Maasdam.

Hope you get to do it. I would seriously consider it if the timing were different. It's easy for us to get to NY.

YES YES YES!

I really want to do the 14 day Quebec - FLL trip on October 1st but vacation time restrictions and my budget might make this much more feasible. I say all this without even bothering to check the prices.

If I lived near NYC I would book that in a heartbeat. What a wonderful way to see a new ship and have a terrific 3 night getaway at a perfect time of year to just sail out and sail back! Love the HAL website graphic of the itinerary:D .

Remembering what our last 3 night trip cost, I don't think this is all that pricey. I'd book soon ... I'll bet that will book fast once word is out.

The site is showing an "SA" costing about $3,100..... that is lower than the cost of the three day Prelude cruise in Europe. (The July 2-5 cruise). I think there probably will be some discount to the HAL web pricing.

I suspect there will be many comp cabins for travel professionals and the press.

Sail - We have all four of us booked in our SA for the 3-day Prelude cruise for $4,420...

HAL's prices seem high to me...

Am I crazy to jump at this? VA aft for $1620 including all port taxes from an amex TA. No discount, from amex off the HAL board. It isn't even listed on one of the web sites that competes for prices.

Have to convince DH it's worth it. TA said, well you are just staying on the ship and not going to any ports. But, that's the part I love.:)

I think it is worth it, Carol, but that is just my opinion. I think it will be fabulous way to see and sail the brand new ship.

Go for it!!! ....and come back here and tell us all about it. :)

So, I convinced my husband how exciting it would be to sail the Eurodam right from NY and he said OK. Called Hal to discuss it and it's an illegal cruise that can only be booked as part of the previous or part of the following cruise since it's going from NY to NY and no foreign ports in between. There is pricing for it, but it can only be booked in conjuntion with another cruise. Drats! :(

Then 1) Why is it listed on their web site as a 3-Day Introduction cruise? This morning you could plug it in and get a rate. 2) Other cruise lines (actually parent company Carnival) have "Cruise to Nowhere". How do they get around the Jones Act?

I think there may be reason to investigate further and not give up on it yet.

The cruise makes no stops so it is not transportation. The Passenger Carriage deals with transportation. This is a cruise to no where and comes back to where it started so it isn't taking you anywhere. In essence, there is no transportation because you wouldn't be going anywhere.

Try again with a different Rep or TA or someone else at HAL.

Jade and Sail, Thanks so much. I would have just let it go, but I called back and spoke to someone else who asked his supervisor who said it was OK for us to book. He also told the supervisor that the agents should all get the correct info. HA. Ha

Anyway, my TA is in the process of booking this now.

This board is really wonderful. I appreciate all the help.:D

Carol...... I'M SO HAPPY TO HEAR it worked out for you. It didn't make sense to me you couldn't book it.

Congratulations ---- I think that is going to be a very fun weekend.

Thanks, Sail. We booked 5190 along the aft, right next door to the one we have for the Noordam. I am soooo excited. I can actually see the cabin on the pictures of the Eurodam aft.

Honestly, I would have just forgotten about even trying. I know it will be a great weekend. I am now addicted to cruising and the board. What could be bad?

However, since all you guys will be on her first, you'll have to come back and post all about her.

NCL does 1 and 2 day Dinner and Dance cruises to nowhere out of New York.

Just found this after Googling Jones Act:

"Foreign-flagged cruise ships may carry passengers from a U.S. port as long as they return them to the same port (a "cruise to nowhere"). Foreign vessels may also call at intermediate U.S. ports as long as no passenger permanently leaves the vessel at those ports and the vessel makes at least one call at a foreign port."

Is there a Mariner discount or are prices just what is posted on HAL web site?

mamaofami

There is a very tiny(I repeat, tiny) Mariner discount. My Amex TA gave us a group discount on the February Noordam cruise but said that so far HAL wasn't giving any group discounts on this to Amex. We will have to wait and see how fast it books and what the story is.

Do you think there may be any special activities for the 3 day cruise and how soon might there be any specific information about the ship and it's offerings? I am new to cruising and am debating about putting the same money toward a longer cruise with ports. I don't like to fly so the next one I am thinking about is a 7 night cruise to Canada on the Jewel in October. Thanks to all.

What type of special activities are you thinking about?

I see that all the suites are closed which means they are being saved for VIP's, journalists, travel agents, or whomever. Unless they've all been booked. They'll probably be special activities for them

Why not have a travel agent call and ask?

I'm booked on that cruise an am looking forward to just cruising. Don't need any special activities. Just the ship, the water and a book.:)

Thanks for your reply.
What I am considering is doing the Eurodam to Canada next year instead,
unless on the introduction cruise out of new york they do something extra special that is not done on subsequent cruises. For example and this is only an example, no charge for the all the extras that they usually charge a fee for or offering the cruise at a reduced rate. I realize though being on an introduction cruise itself is something special.

I don't think the Eurodam will be sailing out of NYC after this fall, so if you want that Canada cruise on her you'll have to do it this year. I don't see anything except Ft. Lauderdale sailings for 2009. What makes you think she will be back in NY? HAL is pulling the Noordam out of NYC after March.

we're five. Really looking forwarrd to this as we don't expect to ever sail her out of FLL.

Oh no. I just assumed that it would keep the same destination for a while.
Thanks for the information. I am doing the Noordam after you and then the JOS in October. I have to think this over, but I sure would like to be on a brand new ship without traveling to far to get to it.
