Does anyone happen to remember seeing horseradish or horseradish sauce being available on HAL? Like maybe served with prime rib or brisket? Am going to be on the Westerdam 12/2 and hope to stay on my diet as much as possible. I can't eat any of the usual & customary salad dressings, and while I can eat "naked" salad, my preference is a mix of horseradish and mayonnaise.

I know my husband has had horseradish with his shrimp cocktail from time to time. I don't know if it was a special request of the steward or something regular and usual. I wouldn't think you should have a problem getting it.
Interesting mayo is permitted on your diet. Lucky you. :)

When I was a kid, there was a chain fast-food restaurant at the mall.... I believe it was "Roy Rogers".
I used to love their "Horsey Sauce", which is just as you've described.
I don't even know if the chain still exists? Maybe Arby's has something similiar?
What I'm getting at is that perhaps you can purchase packs of it at one of those places. (That's a fun idea for a zippy salad dressing!):)

I know I've gotten horseradish with roast beef in the dining room. I'd bet it's available there every night, but I'm not so sure about at the Lido. Maybe they've got those little packets regularly.

Thanks for the idea, NoNoNanette. I also remember the Roy Rogers sauce, but I believe the chain has disappeared. Not sure about Arby's - maybe I'll check for a website.
And sail7seas, Yes, many people find my diet strange (it's basically Atkins, with a few of my own tweaks), but I lost 130 lbs on it and have kept most of that off for the past 7 years, so I'm perfectly willing to ignore the strange looks I get when I order two porkchops with broccoli, NO potato.
And if I have to buy 7 Arby whatevers to get the sauce packets, I'll do it.

Congrats on the weight loss. I always wonder why people make remarks or give strange looks. Whatever works for a person works for a person. More power to you!

I love horseradish sauce...and have a wonderful recipe for one that I found when I was on the South Beach Diet (wish I could get motivated again!). I think if I were in your shoes, I would make it up and bring it in very small zip lock bags...and stick it in your fridge on the ship...you'll be good to go!

Thanks to all the helpful responses. :) I'll hope for the best in the dining room, but found an Arby's in a nearby mall (the website lists the Horsey sauce that NoNoNanette remembers) so I'll have the roast beef with cheddar & bacon, skip the bun, and help myself to a handful of those "horsey" packets for the Lido.
Yes, innlady1, I thought about bringing my own in those little baggies. I regularly carry a small container of Sugarfree Tang, to add to gin & club soda, for my own version of a Screwdriver.
Now, do you think Ship's Services would be able to supply me with carb counts for the "no sugar added" desserts?

I'm grinning ear-to-ear. On THIS forum, I was afraid to suggest grabbing a handful from a fast food joint, but I'd do the same!
BTW: The sugarfree punch is also kind of fun with champagne or vodka if you get sick of the Tang flavor. ;)

CONGRATULATIONS, Gooselace. What an accomplishment!
You misunderstand me.......
I'm jealous of your being able to have mayo. I wish I could but am forced to limit saturated fat. You also would get no strange looks from me. I am one of those folks who eat 7-9 veggie servings per day, almost never a white potato, white rice, white bread, white pasta etc I'm one who 'gets' the strange looks. :)

Oh, no - I knew sail7seas wasn't criticizing or mocking me. I'm the one whose writing wasn't clear.
Many people have to limit fats and I'm probably just lucky that my cholestrol counts/ratios are "picture perfect" as my Dr. says. But there are those who think there's something peculiar about anyone who orders a bacon cheeseburger and then requests "no bun". Like the people who when I weighed 260 lbs felt free to suggest a diet of lettuce & cottage cheese. Wouldn't work for me then or now.
And NoNoNanette, I'll take a couple of friends with me to Arby's, and we'll each take a discreet number of "horsey" packets. Oooh, just had a horrible thought - some fast food places use pump dispensers for ketchup and other sauces. Sure hope Arby's isn't one of those!

Arby's will have the Horsey sauce available in the small packs for "To Go" orders. Am surprised that your cholestrol is good on Atkins. Usually the lipid panel skyrockets with the increase in meat consumption.
Hope you continued success with the weight problem.
BTW, I read a few years ago in a medical journal(JAMA?) that if one eats the right portions and healthily from birth, life expectancy is increased by two years. I'd rather have the tasty stuff and die a little sooner!

Horseradish (sauce) was served with prime rib and with pork tenderloin
and
they also have fat free salad dressings............a different one each night.
I'd bring my own in those little tupperware containers or something if it's really important.
The sugar free desserts were always delicious.
just back...........

My husband was able to get shrimp cocktail sauce for his salad when we were cruising last year. SO, they must have horseradish and you could ask for some mayo on the side too and make your own sauce.

Thanks for all the helpful replies to my "trivial" question - important only to me. This is really a great group! It sounds as if I should be able to get horseradish and mayo in the dining room, and I'll try to get some "Horsey" packets to have for the Lido - just in case.
BTW, the latest research on low carb diets has shown little relationship between cholesterol and fat in the diet - but losing body fat usually improved cholestrol if it had been high, which mine wasn't.

I have cruised on Holland America for years. Years ago, I remember whenever they played the "newlywed" or "not so newlywed" games with the passengers, one of the favorite questions they used to ask the wives was: "What is your husband's favorite condiment?", hoping to get answers such as "I don't think he uses one", "Trojans", etc. Talk about misunderstanding a word?

A grocery store here in Ontario makes a mayo/horseradish sauce to die for....it will clean those sinuses out that is for sure and comes in a squeezable bottle. Wonder how much it would cost to mail you some? VA isn't too far away. :D

On the Volendam this June I asked for a Bloody Mary with horseradish versus traditional hot sauce. Don't think they had it at the bar but off too the kitchen and voila another example of fantastic service!

The Indonesian Hot Sauce (sambal oelek) available in the Lido is pretty jazzy stuff mixed with mayonnaise too. Our waiter used to bring me some of the wonderful homemade extra-high-octane variety from the employees' dining room, as well. I traded with him for some of our local Azorean Piri-piri sauce. I love hot food, but if you're not used to it, be careful.

That's so funny, because here when a restaurant that has a bar says they have no horeseradish, I always ask them to check the bar, and usually they come back with some.

How nice of you to offer to send. Just found one made by Manischewitz - probably not as hot as yours, but also in a handy size squeeze bottle. Will pack one in my checked luggage and hope it doesn't set off any alarms for TSA.

Thanks for the offer, but it seems the packets are only available with carryout. I'm planning a trip to the mall to check that out and get some. According to Arby's very extensive nutrition and ingredient list, the "Horsey" sauce does not contain ketchup, but does have a few carbs, so I'll have to go easy on it. Maybe your kids mix the sauce and the ketchup from the pump dispensers.
Looking forward to meeting you and others from the Roll Call at the Meet & Greet - won't be long now.

Okay, let me know if you need more!!! I'm sure my kids will be happy to make a trip to the drive-thru for you! :D
Now that I think of it - it's is the Arby's sauce (not Horsey) that has ketchup.
We're looking forward to meeting you too. :)

Tulkoff's is always in our fridge....grew up with the stuff. ;)
You may want to contact them to see if there's a location near you that sells their items. Great product, reminds me of my grandmother.

Also, for small packets of dressings, not horseradish, you might try a web site posted here recently called minimus.biz for all sorts of food/condiment items.
Have a wonderful cruise.

I ordered individual packets of peanut butter (among other things) from minimus.biz and the company is extremely reliable. My order came perfectly, promptly and I would not hesitate to place another order with them.
[The peanut butter packets are under 3 oz so are permitted in our zip loc baggies to bring on airplanes. In this era, it's a good idea to have something for a snack in the event we get stranded on a plane for hours. I put some crackers in our carryon so with the peanut but we could manage.]

You are great just to care, and to come up with suggestions, offers to send, etc. Mimimus.biz had many kinds of sauce packets but no horseradish. I'm going to look for Tulkoff's, which should be available in this area. I'm counting on Arby's for Horsey packets, at this point. - will let ekerr19 know if she needs to send out the "troops" for a carry-out mission.:) [/SIZE]
