has anyone sailed in a Category HH outside cabin on either the Volendam or the Zaandam? If so , I would like to hear what you thought about these accomodations. They are listed as totally obstructed. Does any light filter into the cabin? I am thinking of taking a 14 night alaska cruise and the price on these cabins is very attractive. Thanks.

I've been in a DD on the Statendam, right next to an HH, and can tell you that you will get plenty of light in most of the HH. Maybe the ones at the very ends (3300, 3301, 3430, 3431) are a little dark.:)
BTW, we liked being on the Lower Promenade deck, and booked another DD for our 14 days on the Amsterdam.

is the Statendaam that similar to the volendam /zaandam that you can be certain of this?

is the Statendaam that similar to the volendam /zaandam that you can be certain of this?Yes! The R class ships are just slightly longer. If you look at the L. Prom deck plans you will see that the DD and HH cabins fall in very similiar places. If you look at the side photos of the two classes of ships you will see that the steel walls causing the "obstructions" are similar in size and location. And finally, I've been on the Amsterdam which is an R-class. :)

My last two cruises were in HH cabins - one on the Volendam and one on the Zaandam. The cabins have a normal sized window, like all the outside cabins. They look out on the promenade deck - there is about a ten foot width of teak deck, then a metal "wall" that is part of the ship framework - that's the "obstruction". There is plenty of light - the real difference from the C cabins on the Promenade deck is that you can't see the ocean - or at least very little of it.
Some people object to the people passing by on the promenade, but I kind of like it. The windows are "one way glass" so that no one can see in during the day, but you can see out. After dark you do need to close your curtains for privacy.
On the S & R ships, that is the first category I look at - it is usually a bargain IMO.

So am I correct that the obstruction is not right up against the window, but rather is that piece of metal which comes down in the front and back of the ship on the sides ?

If you would like to see a picture from my DD window that shows a part of the steel wall over by the railing, send me you email address.

If your HH category is a guarranty, then you could be upgraded to a higher category. We have booked this for our Hawaii cruise in Jan 08. A higher category could possibly be on the Dolphin deck or the Main deck below the lower promenade ie. category FF, H, G etc. Be sure to check if you would be happy with any of those upgraded cabins. Worst case is that you get an ocean view from a port hole at the front in category G or H. We were in G2517 for our Alaska cruise with 2 port holes. It was better than an inside!!!
If on the other hand, you are going to book a specific cabin, then you will stay there.

On one cruise, I was upgraded from an inside to an F on the lowest deck. Based on that F, I would much prefer an HH to just about anything on the lowest deck. The HHs are usually less expensive than even some insides.

Here are 2 photos of HH-375 on the Maasdam. Maybe this will help. I would not hesitate to book this cabin again. I do believe they are a tad smaller than other outsides not on the Promenade deck but not enough that it made a difference for us.
Have a great cruise!!!

DH and I had an HH on the Amsterdam last January. IIRC cabin number was HH 3420 touted as a fully obstructed. Weeellllll let me tell you!!! Fully UNobstructed. Steel hull was to the left, but looking straight out the window across the lower promenade deck was a beautiful view. We LOVED that cabin, just a few feet to the aft door to the promenade, very easy to get in the AM walk, the late night moonlit stroll, hold hands and watch the wake. We had never stayed on the lower promenade, but I'm glad we did. I would definately book this category again.

I agree with the other posters and loved this cabin. You could easily get a great view if you looked to your left. I would book this cabin again.

I had an HH on the Volendam, and like others have said, they're really not fully obstructed if you look to the side or sit on the edge of the bed. To me they're a good deal, especially for a solo cruiser like myself. Would not hesitate to book this type of cabin again. I had a similar cabin on the Maasdam.

Hi,
I did a review of our cruise on the Zaandam in an HH.
I went around the promenade and checked all the HH for views...the good ones and the not so good ones are listed in my review.
I don't have the link to it handy, but if you do a search for "Mom and her sidekick Sean's review of Zaandam Alaska", you should find it.
I loved the HH!

I bumped my old review forward so you should find it on the first page of the HAL board.:)

I think you can hear some noise but I don't think it's too bad. I remember hearing some noise but it's totally tolerable IMO.

We had our first HH on a recent Volendam cruise to Alaska. It was a HC cabin as far aft as you can get!
The location was good for access to the promenade deck, the door was right outside our cabin! There was plenty of light and it was not fully obstructed. The only down side was in moderate seas the motion of the ship was quite noticeable, other than that it was great.
We wanted another HH for our upcoming Mexico cruise on the Ryndam in the spring but they were all sold out (they seem to go very fast) so I booked a DD close to midships, we are still on the promenade deck so that is just fine.
It is a very convenient deck to be on, book early though or you will be out of luck.
