I am looking at the deck plan for the Zuiderdam and am wondering if the Deluxe Veranda Suites (510sq ft) that are at the rear corners of the decks actually have verandas? On the layout, it really does not show a line, but the room is larger. I would hate to book one and have it be a "special" room due to location. Has anyone here been in one of these to give an opinion?
Thanks!

Have only stayed in the SA suites on either the port or starboard side.

But ALL suites at the aft do have verandahs - some are larger than others. Lines on the drawings should have been drawn to show this.

Are there Pro/Cons to having a veranda on the rear of the ship? We have always been on the sides. Wondering about wind, privacy, sun.
Thanks for any input.

The wrap-around verandahs are the special draw of the aft SB and SC suites. Prior to the April 2008 retrofit of the Z, the verandahs are quite deep (and exposed -- a plus to many, a negative to naturists and shade lovers). After the retrofit, the Navigation, Rotterdam and Upper Verandah deck aft corner verandahs will no longer be enormous and the huge Verandah deck verandah will be entirely covered by the decks above. You can read a number of additional threads providing greater detail about the changes.

The aft and aft corner verandas are not all exposed or all covered. Decks four and five are almost completely open, but deck eight is completely covered. It varies according to deck, with coverage increasing as veranda space decreases. The largest (deepest) verandas are the most open. We recently had 8135 on Zui and could comfortably fit at least 8 people on the covered aft section, which was nice because we experienced rain several times. The side portion of the veranda, although covered, could not be used most of the time because the rain blew in. We would snap pics from there, then retreat out of the wind to the rear section. We have experienced much less wind on an aft veranda than on the side verandas, but I suppose that depends on where you are sailing. Although possibly the smallest aft veranda, we could still fit all the table/chairs, loungers, etc. in the aft section at 8135 and it was comfortable for small gatherings. In better weather, the entire wrap-around veranda would likely accomodate twice as many people as we had - not as many as on the lower decks.

After the re-fit, it looks like the verandas that will be affected are the ones that are now the largest and most open. We prefer to have shade, but many are the opposite. It's a shame they are taking those open verandas away from those who love them. It'd be nice if everyone could be accomodated.

The suites themselves are not all the same size either. An SA on the side is noticeably larger than an aft corner SC, for example.

Thanks for the info on 8135. We're going to be in that cabin in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to it. Tom.

The only issue would be privacy as the decks on the rear are tiered. Each level above is looking into the level below. As you stand on the lido deck you can see down 3 or 4 decks lower into each and every balcony.

I had the misfortune (or fortune depending on your outlook) of having my lens cap fall into one of them. Because of the tiers I was able to go down, knock on the door and retrieve it.

Had it been a port or starboard balcony that cap would have been history.
