View Full Version : Thinking about a long cruise on Zuiderdam (Europe)

Hi all, I'm hoping I can get some input and thoughts on booking a possible 24-night cruise on the Zuiderdam in the Med this summer.

We've been on cruises before but mostly only in the Caribbean on NCL. This would be our first Med cruise, first HAL cruise, and first cruise longer than 10 days. But as my partner and I both work in education, and are no longer in grad school as of this year, we both have some significant time off this summer and would love to take a fantastic summer vacation (I'm also turning 30 so even more reason to celebrate!). But since this will be a significant expense for us, I'm hemming and hawing over whether this cruise might be a good choice for us. Here are my basic questions:

1. Having only been on NCL before, what can I expect on HAL in terms of differences? We don't love dressing up... how formal must one get on formal nights, and how many do you expect there would be on a 24-night cruise?
2. Because it's a long cruise (24 nights), will shows/entertainment be repeated each week? They can't possibly have enough different shows to do a different one each night... how often do you think they would be repeated? I believe this 24-nighter is actually two 12-nighters back to back, if that helps.
3. Same question for dining. Will the menus be repeated each week, or every 12 days? Or can we expect different menus each night? I'm a little nervous about the food on board, because NCL has so many different options for dining... I'm afraid I might be bored eating in the same dining room each night for over 3 weeks. Any thoughts on this?
4. Because it's so long, we can really only afford an inside cabin. We've been in an inside before, but only for 6 nights. Other than that, we've had balconies. Are we likely to go crazy in an inside cabin for 24 nights? How are the sizes and comfort of the inside cabins on the Zuiderdam? Are the beds comfortable?
5. Because it's a longer cruise, and on HAL, I'm wondering what the average age of passengers might be like. I'm only turning 30 in the summer, and my partner is a few years older, and while we are definitely an "easy-going, laid-back" younger couple (we much prefer sitting out on deck reading to any partying or silly pool games or anything), I wonder if we'll feel out of place on HAL. Any thoughts on that? Also, is it possible/easy to get a table for 2 in the dining room?

We are mostly drawn to this cruise for the ports (which are great!), and it's a port-intensive itinerary so I paid more attention to where the ship was going rather than the ship itself. But obviously, we'll be spending a lot of time there, especially eating dinner, evening events, and sleeping. So if anyone has any insight or advice for us, I'd love to hear it!

Thanks in advance!
Jenn

We are doing the first leg of a Med' cruise on Zuiderdam (Venice to Venice) in Sept next year. it will be our second Med' cruise. 24 days is a little long for us and we have seen the ports on the last leg.

I will try to answer your questions.

*We have tried NCL and for us there is no comparison. HAL is way better in all aspects.
*We have never taken a B/B so I can not answer this one.
*HAL now has "as you wish" dining so you can book that if it is your preference.
*Inside cabins are ok but I prefer to see some daylight and would go for an outside. HAL cabins are larger than most and the new bedding is wonderful.
*The age group on HAL is definitely "more mature" but there are plenty of young at heart seniors around and in the summer you will find a good mix of pax, you should fit in just fine.
*You should be able to get a table for 2 if you request early enough. They are limited but perseverance usually pays off.
*There is no reason why you will not love HAL, the service is outstanding in all areas and the ships are first class IMO.

You will have a great cruise, the Med' is a perfect way to see some of what Europe has to offer. Enjoy.

We did our fist O cruise this past summer. We have 2 more booked. We still enjoy HAL and Princess but O is a cut above. They do have inside cabins as well. I'm also a teacher and my partner and I are sold on Oceania

We have done quite a few back-to-back cruises.

All right - so this is 2 back-to-back cruises - each 12 days long. The menus will be different each night of the twelve night cruise. On the second segment, the menus will be the same but maybe in a different order - depends on port times.

The main production shows will be the same. Some of the other enterainers may change. A few times this has happened. Other times we have had the same comedians, magicians, etc., on both segments.

There are quite a tables for 2 - but be advised that some of them are very near to tables of 4 and/or 6.

HAL's European cruises do tend to attrack an older group of passengers.

Inside - have never done one.

Formal - HAL's European cruises do tend to be more formal than some of the other itineraries.

I can speak to the inside cabins portion of your question, as I (almost) always book inside.

The insides on the Vista class ships (Zuiderdam is one) are much smaller than the insides on the other HAL classes of ships. Think "cabinette". ;) There are some J-category quad-insides on the Main Deck, however, that are quite adequate for two people. If you decide to book this cruise look into those. I recommend starboard side, nearer to mid-ship, as there is less nightlife above that area.

I don't remember if anyone answered this---the beds are divine! :)

HAL has formal nights, and most people will dress up for the evening. It is not considered "optional" as it is on NCL. In Europe I would expect 2-3 formal nights on a 12-night cruise (depending on itinerary).

Arriving in Venice to board and sight see on June 1. This will be our longest cruise but like the idea of 2 nights in various ports. We've always had balcony cabins and will do so here. Since its Europe there will be a wider mix of ages and nationalities on board. HAL is a lot better than NCL.
