View Full Version : Please change the abbreviation HAL

This abbreviation creeps me out. If you've ever seen 2001 A Space Oddesey you will understand why. If you haven't seen the movie allow me to explain...There is a supercomputer that is designed to learn from it's programmers and users, this computer is put on a space craft and the name of the computer is HAL...well as an AI device it learns to think on it's own...and starts killing people as a matter of self preservation. So...everytime I see the name HAL on these boards I flash back to that strange movie (Other things take place in the movie...It's a really philosophical look at life and what it means to be "Human").

I seriously doubt there's even a teeny chance Holland America Line has any plans to change the company name so we will continue to see HAL. Try compartmentalizing it...... :)

Seems that some people on this thread have a bad case of the Mondays. I don't really expect them to change the name...I was just sharing my cognitive process when I see the name HAL on the boards. Sorry if it ruined your week.

Go forward one letter on HAL and what do you get? IBM.

Gotta change that too - it's too scary.

Dave was the astronaut who had the conversation with HAL.

I can still hear the tone and timbre of HAL's voice! Spooky.

But my week isn't ruined. ;)

We've tried to delete all memories of "2001-a Space Odyssey" from our memory banks. Neither of us understood that crazy movie, and I've been a life long sci-fi fan.

Almost any acronym can stand for more than one thing.

There, there. In the end, Dave won -- HAL didn't.
Anyway, that was 40 years ago, so even if Dave didn't prevail, the tin whiskers would have taken HAL out years ago.

The classic antidote for Frankenstein movie heebie-jeebies was "Young Frankenstein." Worked for me. Perhaps the cure here would be a few episodes of "Lost in Space."

Now if they can just figure out something to make clowns not so scary . . . .

That movie was dreadful...no...Painful to watch. If I were a Philosophy Major, I would probably love it. It's more about the arguement of "What is the line between animal and man...and what is the line between object and Human." When can things think and when do they operate on instinct and programming. It would have been a much better movie...if they would have taken about 45 minutes out of the middle and left it on the cutting room floor.

This could be a banner year for Boston sports. You have the World Series, Boston College is a true a contender for BCS championship, the Patriots seem unstoppable and The Celtics may be a contender as well. I hear A Rod is a free agent; do the SOX need a good 3rd baseman who could tear apart the green monster?

If you think HAL is a bad abbreviation how about Celebrity CC posters who Just use a big X, what does that mean? X;The treasure is buried here, X; is where the last ship sank? X like in has been cruise line?

HIJACK ALERT!!!! ;)

Location: Lafayette, LA...Formerly Columbus, OH

How long have you been in Lafayette, Mark? I've got dear friends in Breaux Bridge!

I stay at Bayou Boudin cabins on the Teche quite often! A friend of mine, Rocky Sonnier, "The Cracklin' King", owns the joint. :)

I recently began having friends fly in and out of your airport. What a breeze! It's a much longer drive for me, but worth not having to screw around with the NOLA airport.

My main HAL acronym association isn't with that homicidal computer--it's with Prince (of Wales) Hal and his verbal combats with Falstaff in Shakespeare's _Henry IV_ plays and his physical combats with the French in _Henry V_. Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint Geooooooooooorge!!!!!

I am sincerely hoping the wise owners of the Red Sox take a pass on A-Rod. We don't want him.

I'm watching on TV the Red Sox plane just landed at Logan Airport and the fans are all waiting at Fenway Park to welcome home the players and that precious trophy they carry with them. Such Fun!!!

Funny, I never thought of HAL as HAL (of 2001 fame). It never dawned on me. "HAL 9000 (Heuristically (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heuristic) programmed ALgorithmic computer) is a fictional character in Arthur C. Clarke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_C._Clarke)'s Space Odyssey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Odyssey) saga. In translations from the original English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language), HAL might have another name: for example, in the French (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_language) version of 2001: A Space Odyssey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey), his name is stated as being CARL, for Cerveau Analytique de Recherche et de Liaison ("Analytic Research and Communication Brain")."

I got this from Wikipedia. So, HAL is really CARL in French. So, maybe Holland America Line should change its name to CARL:rolleyes: . Let's see what name could we give it????

Just kidding. I love the push and pull of these threads. I read them everyday.:D

We moved down here a little over a year ago. It's quite a bit different in Lafayette than it is anywhere in the Universe (Or at least different than Columbus).

Before it's acquisition by Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises was known as Chandris Cruises -
- named for John D. Chandris, the founder of a shipping line which had its beginnings in 1922.
X in the Greek alphabet stands for “ch,” the first letters of the name Chandris.

HAL originated in 1873 as NASM which stood for Nederlandsch Americaansche Stoomvart Maatschappiji
(Netherlands American Steamship Company)
It wasn't until 1896 that NASM officially became De Holland Amerika Lijn N.V.,

Right on explanation of Celebrity's "X". Keep hoping this will turn up in a Trivia contest, but never has to my knowledge, including on Celebrity.

Interesting explanation of Holland America's names over the years - never knew this, even though my grandfather worked in their NY office for many years in the 30s.

Here's another one that I doubt anybody but a Dutchman knows: what do letters KLM stand for in name of the Dutch national airline? I certainly can't remember it. Yes, I know the English translation is Royal Dutch Airlines, but what is it in Dutch?

As a Yankee fan living in the midst of "Red Sox Nation", I need some sympathy!

Interesting. Name HAL was also used for an auxiliary program for Lotus 1-2-3 back in the dark ages of PCs (80s and early 90s). I believe it was developed by a couple of young programmers, and added some features that early versions of 1-2-3 didn't have. One of the most useful was an "undo" feature. It was quite simple to write a batch file so that HAL loaded autmoatically with 1-2-3.

If I recall correctly, Lotus eventually bought the program and incorporated its features into later versions of 1-2-3. Wonder if the HAL program name was taken from the film, or if the writers used the same logic as grsnovi explains. Any geeks out there who know, or who are old enough to remember the HAL program?

The reason people use X for Celebrity is because of the big X on the funnels of each ship. (You probably already knew that!)

The reason for HAL is HOLLAND (H) AMERICAN (A) LINES (L)

It helps not to spell it all out every time.
