Hi All,
Di & I have decided in future for any overseas trips that we will scan all our documents :eg passports, flights etc and dtore them on a USB stick and take that with us in case we lose the original paper copies. Its probally just peace of mind and I dont know if it would be accepted if you did lose your passport or plane ticket.Any Ideas or comments would be appreciated.

Hi
yep your right most documents need to be original but they are scanned copies of the originals and maybe it would assist to speed things up should you be unfortuneate to lose them.

Probably a good idea just so that when you go to the Australian embassy to get some help you can show all the relevant information in a format they're used to. Travelling OS with our family of 5 recently, I took 2 photocopies of all our passports, credit cards and visas and in 2 different hand luggages just in case we lost anything.

I think it's a great idea! Saves having to carry photocopies of everything!

When we went to England a couple of years ago the travel agent told us to photocopy our passports, our licences, our credit cards and our medicare card. She said to keep a copy on us and leave a copy here with family. She said it's better if there is someone in Australia with the copies cos 'red tape etc.' can happen quicker if you need to replace it. I still have our copies here in a folder that our children can access if they have to when we are overseas or even just travelling around OZ.

Hi Col and Di:)
Yes, what sailawaysally says is a good idea, we do that to, leave a copy of everything behind, and we put a copy of everything in our carry on, in Andy's case and mine, just incase, we just slip it in the zippered part we dont use.
Its just easier if originals are lost, all the serial numbers etc are handy! especially credit cards, how many of us know that number by heart:eek:
We do passports, travel insurance, license, tickets, and any hotels I have booked online,

It's a good idea - but I'd still take paper copies. I've travelled all over the world, and also lived overseas. For any trip, I'd do the following:
'Emergency' Envelopes for my parents and now my husband's parents, containing copies of:
- Travel insurance documents for both of us
- front and back of every bank card and credit card for both of us
- Passports for both of us
- Hotel reservations
- Plane/cruise/ANY tickets
Also an itinerary for their fridge.
An envelope also goes in my hand bag, one (without credit card info) in my luggage and one envelope in my husband's luggage.
This means that if anything happens, wherever we are, we ALWAYS are sorted - and if everything we have is stolen, our parents have an emergency pack.
On longer overseas trips, we give my dad for me and my husband's mum for him power of attorney to operate on our behalf within a certain date range. When I lived overseas my father had one, which meant if I needed him to check on bank details/bill payments/write a letter on my behalf he could do it for me. It also means if something happens to us they can help sort it out and cut through red tape.
Overly cautious maybe, and I've never needed to access our parents' kit (they hand their envelopes over when we come back and we destroy them) but we have travelled in places that sometimes aren't very safe and it's good to know we have a back up if need be.

Col,
This is a great idea that will work as a backup of most documents. You can carry your lifes documents on a thumb drive now.
There can be a concern about keeping all documents or backups together in one location, so there is one distinct other advantage to a thumb drive. You can get a drive that you can encrypt, so that you and Di are the only people that can read it. That way nobody else can use your backup documents for identity theft if they are lost or stolen.
If an authority insists on a paper copy, you can still print one out anyway. Thumb drive cannot substitute for notarised (JP signed) copies though.
I am adding to my packing list.
Cheers

I have scanned all of my documents passport etc and i have emailed them to my yahoo and hotmail addresses and stored there so if i lose anyhting I know they are stored online and can get access so long as I have a computer. I keep an email address just for this and give to people here so if they need to they can access it :D
