Ok, well, I have woken up on a drizzly Sydney Sunday after crashing at 8:30pm last night. How did I manage 7 nights in a row, staying up till around 1pm? (I had an early night on night 8 - 11:30pm!)

Our expectations:
Eve: always wanted to cruise.. would I be disappointed?
Peter: NEVER wanted to cruise... how would I cope with the boredom?

Answers:
Eve: everything I dreamed it would be
Peter: wacko... I am a convert, ready to spread the message 'cruising is fabulous'.

................................................

Won't go into the daily nitty gritty, will try and highlight good v a few bad things.

................................................

FOOD
Plenty of it, one so-so dinner out of all the meals we took. We had a 'kids cruise free' cruise, so the fact it was out of school holidays meant absolutely nothing, may as well have been holidays. Anway, that meant the buffet area for breakfast and lunches was, to us, a disaster, no go, war zone!!!!!!!! (We have done our time at buffets and other kid intensive areas... now our darlings are in their 20s, we did not want to spend our holiday with other people's darlings). And perhaps that is why on some cruises people get ill from colds etc.. lots of the little ones running around, sneezing and coughing open mouthed.. yuk!

So, we had breakfast and lunch each day in the Bordeaux dining room, and I highly recommend this way of eating, as the food is freshly cooked, at a nice hot temperature for the hot dishes and presented well. Breakfasts included an excellent choice of cereals, hot dishes, fruit dishes, 2 types of pancakes, french toast (not recommended unless you want to become an instant diabetic.. sugar and butter loaded!), egg dishes, juices, and so on. Lunches were three courses, and we thoroughly enjoyed each lunch.

The dinner seating was the same each night. The first night we were last on our table of 10, and it was very quiet initially after the initial hallos were said. However, as we were still in Smugglers at 2pm the following morning with 2 other couples from our table, you can tell things quickly improved on our table! I don't know how the seating was arranged, but we lucked out sitting with Wendy, Dave, Rosie and Ross... Four courses each night .... heaven for me who doesn't like cooking much (we had a casserole for dinner last night.. looked nothing like we had eaten for the past 8 days!)

And don't forget afternoon tea.. the scones were delicious!

STAFF
Our cabin stewards, Probanto and Firman, were efficient, pleasant and unobtrusive. Our dinner waitress Teresa was lovely and efficient, with a beaming smile. Our dinner drinks waiter was not as good, but that was a minor hiccup.

ENTERTAINMENT
Where do I start? The shows were fabulous, the young dancers/singers full of energy and talent. Demo was hysterical.... his humour bordering on not politically correct, which all 6 of us enjoyed. Perfect Match, Marriage Match, Pop Idol.. lots of fun. I cannot remember the last time I spent 8 days in a row, laughing most of the time!

We enjoyed Trivia, although I was miffed that one table of 4 won every game except for one! Someone at one game informed us that she saw that foursome take out Trivial Pursuit each day from the library and go through many cards.. hmmm! They ended up with numerous hats, t-shirts, coasters and magnets.. how many t-shirts and hats can 4 people wear!! (Feel better now that is off my chest!)

We also went to dancing classes, the movies, making things, bingo etc etc. The good thing was that there was enough to keep everyone busy and if I wanted to do something and Peter another, off we went, rendezvousing for at mealtime!!!!!! Some days I did things alone, some days with Wendy, Trivia all 6 of us, etc etc and some afternoons I lay on a deckchair on a side deck (child free zone) and read my book or just looked at the ocean.

Heavens, that is enough for this one thread, I think.. typist's cramp!!

Will do a post on shore trips, shore excursions and anything else that pops into my head sometime over the next few days.

Just found Jarrod has been busier than me posting reviews(thanks for the photo, J!!)

I did not see either the singer or the comedian.. Peter saw them on the first night and said the singer was not much and the comedian was hopeless (not his word, but I don't want to be censored), so we didn't bother going to their own shows on later evenings.

We ate in the Burgundy room for dinner each night.

I didn't bother going to either of the Guest Entertainers shows either.

I tried getting that photo posted last night as that storm hit. I just got it posted in time too.

I hit the sack around 11pm last night, and woke up @ 8.30am. Kept on looking at the clock last night. told mum it was time to have a drink in the Speakeasy!!:p It was strange having dinner @ 6.30pm too.

Back to work for both of us tomorrow!! Luckily for you, it is only 2 days.
Hope you stay around on the boards Eve now that you have completed your first one.:)

PS....Lost your glasses yet?:p

Eve, I don't know of any cruises to Lord Howe, Andy's cousin and one of my girlfiends work at a local TA here in Port that are the Lord Howe specialists, wont mention the name for "great fear" of being "poofed":) so can enquire for you.

Andy's sister worked on Lord Howe for a number of years, he says there was a freighter that leaves from Yamba that takes goods over, and it used to take passengers, but you would be looking at 1 week to get there:eek: and his other comment was "what would you want to go there for", but we will ignore him, because he doesnt like to cruise either:rolleyes: and wont take me to Lord Howe Island:( I think it looks stunning and would just love to relax and laze around snorkelling those waters.

thanks for the review Eve,
I know what you mean about being a first time cruiser. I remember when writing my review so soon after the cruise I was pretty much a baby about the ship movment. Now thinking back, I don't think I took full advantage of what was on offer on the ship and really never spent enough time studying the Pacific Daily to find out !!
The more reviews I read I'm sure that I need to drag hubby away again so that we can experience a cruise in more .....relax mode ?

I really didn't know what to expect, despite being on these boards for quite a few months before we left. Very different being away just as a couple rather than with a group of friends / family too....esp. no children !

Looking forward to your shore activities review. :D
cheers

Yep, that seems to be the common theme with 'reluctant cruisers'... How long into the cruise did it take him to be a convert?? It only took our relucant cruiser about 2 days to ask the question 'what was I worried about?''

We had a 'kids cruise free' cruise

Hmmm - how does one know if a cruise is a "kids go for free" cruise. I don't think I would like to be on one of those!! I will be on the Pacific Sun 08 - 18 Dec.

No doubt you will have loads of kids on that cruise. My children finish school Dec 7th in Qld so holidays have started. Year 12 have already finished and Yr 11 finishes in 2 weeks time. So being a pre xmas cruise it will be busy. You can call P&O and ask them if it is a kids free cruise. Just found out the 2 nighter we have for our daughters 18th has been put as a kids free cruise! In the end of the week! I was excited there as I didnt think we would have the hassles with the kids clubs and not being able to get in but again it may not be the case! We have paid for our son and again P&O have done a kids free cruise! ANNOYING!

I know I love my kids but 400 kids onboard is not a fun thing! Just to many....and you are waiting forever for the buffets etc

No doubt you will have loads of kids on that cruise. My children finish school Dec 7th in Qld so holidays have started.

Public school breaks up on the 14th in Qld.
Our son will miss the last week of school for this cruise. He is really upset about that. (not) :p
Our older son will already be finished (year 12).
I don't think P&O advertised this one as "kids Free", it was pretty full when we booked.
If there are a lot of kids there is always somewhere to hide away, the casino is child free :D

Went last year on the 9th Dec and there did not appear to be that many kids, so expect this one to be the same.

Enjoying the review can't wait to board the Sun, keep it coming :)
