View Full Version : How to simplify your post reading onCC

I found this out on another board that I follow occasionally. I even wrote to Andy about how tedious I find it, to wade through 2 pages of "countdown (Or count UP) clocks" lists of everyone's 45 past cruises, just to find a 3 or 4 word answer. Any of you out there are of a similar mind, I discovered that on the User CP click on, on the far left of the CC header, under the "HOME"...you can go on and into OPTIONS...reject receiving Avatars, etc etc. and Viola...it's all gone! For me this was wonderful. I'm glad you've all had such alife to enable you to go cruising so much but.... I just didn't want to read it with every post.

Sorry I was wrong all the stuff is still there, just didn't check right posts!! Back to the drawing board!:D
Tried it again and it worked again...now to wait to see if it continues to work!

Hi Napi's Mom !

I just tried fooling around with it a bit. If you go into the User Control Panel, then Edit Options.... and Uncheck "Show Avatars" and "Show Signatures" and save the chages... that should take care of it. I just tried it myself and it worked fine.

You may need to log out, and re-log in for the changes to stick.

I hope this helps.

Also, members with long lists or numerous graphics and countdowns in their siggys should try to UNCHECK the "show your signature" box on the reply page. It is located *just* under the Submit Reply button in the Miscellanous Options section.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to do a bit a housecleaning either. We do ask everyone at the first of the year to take a look at what can be removed from their signatures or shorten long lists, just to be thoughtful of your fellow community members. Can't hurt to get a jump on this!

Yes, lots of wading on some threads, but I actually enjoy browsing through some people's cruise histories and their upcoming cruise lists ... esp. the B2B2B... and it gives me ideas for my next cruise. DH is a hard sell for cruise vacations, so my list is short....but I wouldn't mind having a list like some that I've seen.:)

But if you don't mind another suggestion for unclogging the threads .... I think it would be great if those who quote other posts, only quoted the relevant portion of the post they are responding to... i.e. not the full 10 paragraphs!

It's really weird...It keeps popping back & forth...when I first came back on it was all "Stuff" again...but now I figured it out...you must "log on" to have the controls work. I think I'm going to access CC from my Explorer server, (as I usually use Netscape ,son & law -comp exp.- set me up, quirk of his.. not to use Micro soft if you can help it) but Explorer "remembers" my log in and Net. won't. (Now on the Celeb. website just the opposite is true!
Andy, and all the rest of you, thanks for help. I sure appreciate the simpified posts. So much easier to keep the "idea" flowing.:D

I followed the directions and it worked, but now the "view first unread" doesn't work. How do I fix that?

There seem to be two basic groups of participants on CC--those either researching cruises and/or who are interested in cruising per se and those who participate for social reasons--to "chat," connect with friends and discuss their own likes and dislikes. Both groups have something to add to the boards. However, for those looking for specific information on a ship or an itinerary, navigating the many extended posts, repetitive posts and irrelevant posts has become increasingly onerous. There must be some way to "tighten" things up a bit, either through consolidation of posts, creation of more "stickies" on favorite topics and more aggressive monitoring of irrelevant, off-topic and obvious troll posting. CC is like ivy, beautiful if controlled but, if not cut back, it can really get out of hand and eventually loose its appeal.

That's one reason why I like the Reviews section ... you can zero in on a particular ship and read numerous reports from those who have been on the ship and who have done the itinerary that you are interested in.

The Ports of Call board is another favourite - very specific and relevant info to be found there!

I enjoy the cruise line forums and have accepted the fact that a lot of digression occurs ... occasionally to my benefit as I may end up learning something that I would not have otherwise.

If you are looking for particular information, there is always 'search this forum' function that is helpful. Just insert a word or string of words that will search for the information you desire. The search result will provide all the postings with that word or words in RED. Then you can do an easy perusing thru to find what you want.

My pet peeve is folks that requote long postings before they provide their 2 or 3 word response. Happy Sailing!

It started with a letter to Andy about how frustrating all this Stuff" was for us wanting to find out info on ship, ports etc., not others cruise history or future cruises etc. and asked if anything could be done as it seemed to get out of hand...but while on the "O" board (Still feel a loyalty to them and read it occasionally) I mentioned that theirs are less "stuff" on them and said I wished I could get rid of it all...and the poster explained how!:D

My pet peeve is posters who type their entire post in bold RED or bold VIOLET or whatever. Is there any way I can turn that off?

If not, could the hosts please request the posters NOT do it with their entire post? I'm guessing they do it for one of two reasons: 1. to easily locate their own postings as they scroll through a thread and/or 2. self-importantance, as in "ooh...look at me!"

In any case, it's like the SHOUTING by using ALL CAPS in entire posts that has plagued the Internet for years.

As to the long lists of cruises and countdown clocks and animated avatars, etc., those would be better listed just in people's profiles, where it is very easy to clck one's screen name and read, as opposed to having it listed in each signature.

The only time I see all that is before I log in, as I turned it off long ago. But I am guessing it affects bandwidth, which is very slow on cruises.

I Agree completely! In fact I really can't read those purple and pink posts. Red isn't as bad . Also several people use strange fonts that make them difficult to read. So far I haven't noticed if color is "off" after I log on, but the "Stuff" is all gone. One thing missing from CC postings is SPELL check... as I am a terrible speller and noticed others even worse. I should post again from Explorer rather than Netscape my normal server, as it has a spellcheck for anything typed into a site! Just used to the way Net. works.
I use the "" or italics font to show Quote if not using all the previous post. So far I can't figure out how to do the "Multi Quote" feature. :D
Just checked the RED portion is indeed still RED...

You might want to switch from Netscape to Firefox/Thunderbird. It's similar to Netscape and has a spell check feature. To do a Multi-Quote, click the multi-quote icon in each message you want to quote. Then just click the reqular quote icon in one of the messages you selected. Hope this helps.

Hi Susan,

I'm looking forward to both cruises. As a bonus, we won't be subject to the fuel surcharge just imposed by Oceania since we've already made our final payment. :) My wife and I have always traveled independently. We usually stay in small inns and lodges. We resisted cruising because of the large number of passengers on many ships and fears of regimentation until two years ago when some good friends talked us into a cruise on the Mercury. We've enjoyed our Celebrity cruises but I want to try cruising on smaller ships. After our Regent cruise, I'd like to try an Azamara cruise to compare to Oceania.

Hi Dave - most of our travels are by independent land trips but if I find the right itinerary on the right ship, then we'll cruise. So far the choices have been good ... we have a Quest cruise booked for next June but still sitting on the fence as to whether we want to see Turkey via cruise ship or land.
