Holland is a country in Europe, a.k.a. The Netherlands.;)

Holland America is a cruise line, headquartered in Seattle, a.k.a. HAL.:)

The country doesn't like to be called Holland, America and the cruise line doesn't like to be called Holland. :D

Please (unless you're speaking of a town in Michigan) refer to the cruise line as Holland America or HAL.

Thank you for your consideration.....

What about "Holland American"? I run into that all the time. Is that someone who was originally from the Netherlands? Or of Netherlands background?

Is the "Holland American Line" the standard pick-up used in bars by U.S. citizens of Netherlands registry who are trying to score?

Is it hyphenated (Holland-America), as is "Yum-Yum Man"? Or is it left plain (Holland America) as in "Gratuity Included"?

I have seen posters here on this Board refer to the name of the cruise line as Holland. Seeing as we are reading an HAL BB, we know what is meant. But, of course, the cruise line's name is not "holland".

dakrewser is more than able to speak for himself but I think that is part of what he is referring to????

Why would we call Holland, America when it really wants to be called the Netherlands?

1. Country name: Nederland

2. Nederland has 12 provinces
3. Noord Holland in which Amsterdam is located
4. Zuid Holland in which Rotterdam is located
5. The Hal shipping line is Holland Amerika Lijn

For your information

I don't care what you call it so long as I can call their ship's "home" once or twice a year. :D

What about "Holland American"?Yes, that's quite common. Now, there were such things as the Norwegian American Line (Den Norske Amerikalinje or NAL) and Swedish American Line (Svenska Amerika Linien or SAL), and even way, way back the Scandinavian American Line (which was really Danish and was the transatlantic arm of DFDS (http://www.dfds.com/), whose full name is Det Forenende Dampskibs Selskab - The United Steamship Company). But of course then HAL would be the "Dutch American Line" which it is not.

Is it hyphenated (Holland-America), as is "Yum-Yum Man"? Or is it left plain (Holland America) as in "Gratuity Included"?Today, it's not hyphenated... But it most certainly was at one point. The original name was derived from the simple fact that it was the "Holland to America Line" or "Holland-America Line", just like you might say, "I was on a New York-Los Angeles flight". (The official name, long since dispensed with, was Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij - perhaps someone who speaks Dutch cares to give the exact translation, but I believe it is roughly "Netherlands-America Steamship Company".)

Now, for the real HAL historian types - when did they remove the hypen?

I know that in the early '70s ('73 I think, their centennial) when they briefly changed the name to Holland America Cruises and introduced the short-lived "slug" logo, it was not hyphenated... My guess is that that's when the hyphen went the way of the dodo, but I don't know for sure.

I don't care what they call it, either.

Just as long as I can sail on those "dam" ships.

I think whole world calls Holland/Netherlands by both names:

In Russia it either Gollandia or Nederlandi too.

(and yes from my experience they (Holland people) prefer to call their country Nederland. :)

If anybody is still interested this is what I found:

Netherlands

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

(Redirected from The Netherlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=The_Netherlands&redirect=no))
For other uses of the word Dutch, see Dutch (disambiguation) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_%28disambiguation%29). The Netherlands (Nederland in Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language)) is the European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_the_Netherlands), a constitutional monarchy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_monarchy). It is located in northwestern Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) and borders the North Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Sea), Belgium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium) and Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany). The country is often — technically incorrectly — referred to by the name of the economic powerhouse of the United Provinces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Provinces) (1581 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1581)–1795 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1795)): Holland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland) (now split into North and South Holland).

The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated and geographically low-lying countries in the world (its name literally means the Low Countries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Countries)) and is famous for its dikes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dike_%28construction%29), windmills (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windmill), wooden shoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clogs), tulips (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip) and perceived social tolerance. Its liberal policies are often mentioned abroad. This country is also host to the International Court of Justice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Court_of_Justice). Amsterdam is the official capital as stated by the constitution. The Hague (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hague) is the administrative capital (the seat of government), the home of the Queen, and the location for most of the embassies.
