found this on princess site, will it affect us straight away

Effective November 7, 2007
Because of the continuing rapid escalation of fuel prices, the North American brands of Carnival Corporation, including Princess Cruises, have announced a fuel supplement of $5 per passenger, per day, for all voyages departing on or after February 1, 2008.
The supplement applies to the first and second passengers in a stateroom up to a maximum of $70 per person per voyage, for both new bookings and those that are currently under deposit or fully paid.
The fuel supplement is necessitated by significant rises in fuel prices which have dramatically increased Carnival Corporation's operating costs. Until now, the company has absorbed the increase in fuel costs but, unfortunately, it is not possible to continue covering these substantial expenses.
Implementing this fuel supplement was a difficult decision, and we hope that our passengers will understand that this is a necessary step in today’s economic environment.

Well, the airlines do it so it was only a matter of time before the cruise companies started as well.

Lets see, take $70 and multiply that by the number of passengers it lists on the Sun Princess in the brochure i have and you get $136 500. Wonder how much it costs to fuel a ship these days?

Also, does that mean that we can turn off auto tips to be able to afford the fuel surcharge? I think i see a new can of worms being opened :p

Ha Ha, knew it would happen.

I remember reading on a thread somewhere, someone did a breakdown of how many passengers by the average cost of a cabin, less all the operating costs, including fuel, wages, all that type of thing, and they are still making heaps. I wish I could remember where I read it and who posted it.

It was very impressive & comprehensive, a lot of research was done.

I saw this applying to Carnival on usenet a few days ago. Carnival Corp will always act to maintain shareholder wealth, the joy of the corporate system.

I do not believe that there is an issue here yet. It is as much about the weakness of the US dollar, as it is about the oil price.

Our dollar has soared at least 20% against the US this year, so they should be making good profits against the prices they have sold the cruises for. All the same, it will only be a matter of time before they add a charge here too.

Cheers

I reckon P&O will have the fuel surcharge, WHY ? because P&O is Carnival as is Princess, Cunard etc.

I am a little confused.

At this stage, was the message just for people on Princess Cruises, or have they said that it will affect P&O cruisers too (eg. Cruises on Pacific Dawn).

Thanks for your help!!

At this stage, the message was released for North American cruises. They have had more problems with the rising fuel price because the US dollar is also losing value.

Nothing has been announced for Australia (yet)
