View Full Version : Question for smokers, Duty free onboard?

We are leaving on the Oosterdam tomorrow, does anyone know the pricing of cigarettes on board the ship? Or is it better to wait till port time in Cabo San Lucas? A very last minute question, I know, but answers will be appreciated. Also, to any non-smokers who might feel harassed by my proximity, I will always extinguish (the cigarette) upon request. If asked nicely....:)

The ship does have good prices, but it depends upon what you smoke, the don't carry all brands. I don't know what the price of cigarettes is in Cabo San Lucas, but generally the ship has good prices on Marlboro.

They were up a few $$ but not much last week. Approx 21.00 per carton USD for name brand smokes. ie Winston, Marlboro regs and 100's.

I relapsed on the Westerdam in 2004. Bought one pack at the poolside bar. $8.00. Was like smoking GOLD. :)

I remember spending $2.00/carton for name-brands. How prices/taxes have gone up.

You can purchase a 5 carton bundle for $80 onboard (regular only, not 100's).
Depending on where you live and what the taxes are, that's a great price!!!
Don't know about the prices in Cabo.

Thanks much for the info, all. My brand is Marlboro Medium, and here in Nevada cartons are going for around $35.00 or up, so will buy on board. If they don't have the mediums, than I'll decide between regulars or lights.

I paid $79.99 for a 5-carton container of Marlboro's during my last cruise. On HAL ships, you can take them right back to your cabin too. On some other cruise lines, such as Princess, you can't. You pick up your smokes on the last day of the cruise ... just the same as it works with your liquor.

I always loved cruising because of how cheap I could buy my smokes. Of course, since I've been smoke-free now for over a week due to my sinus surgery, who knows ... maybe I won't need to buy them duty-free or otherwise any longer. :) Wish me luck, because these things are getting very, very expensive. I could take another cruise each year with what I spend on smokes ... and I'm not even that heavy a smoker!

GOOD LUCK, Rita. Seeing as you seem to have had to give them up at least temporarily, hopefully you'll not go back. I posted to someone else earlier today, it is the best thing you can do for yourself.

You Can Do It....if you really want to. Sorry to hear you've had surgery.... hope you are mending well.

Wishing you the best!

Good luck. :) After one week the worst of the physical withdrawal is over---now it's psychological. You need coping mechanisms and a buddy system---like AA members have.
When the urge for a ciggy strikes tell yourself that you can have one in ten minutes if you still want it then. You won't, if you wait just that few minutes. Then phone a friend.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. I really appreciate them. I can't smoke for at least two more weeks yet ... this was pretty serious surgery done under general anesthesia (after two less serious procedures were done in the office and didn't work), and the sinuses are going to take at least that much longer to heal. So, I figure that if I can go a total of three weeks without a cigarette, I might as well just quit and use that money for something else (like more cruises).

I appreciate the good vibes being sent my way and will keep you all apprised of my progress.

Here in Philly, you'll pay close to $5.50 a pack now. While you can get some discounts direct from Marlboro, a carton will run you like $40+ dollars.

If one thinks about it, that really is a boatload of money. As ridiculous as it sounds to be worried about the money more than my health, it is really getting to me how much I am being charged for cigarettes, and how many better uses I can put that money towards. If anything, it is gonna be the money that convinces me to give them up for good. What can I say? I'm a cheap b******. :)

Good luck, Rita. Maybe I should sinus surgery so I will stop. I'm fighting a sinus infection now.

Cigarettes are much cheaper on ships and as already stated, HAL will let you take them to your cabin. We take one carton with us and buy the rest on the ship and then stock up to bring home.

Keep up the good work.

That's how this started ... as a sinus infection. Then my sinuses "blew up" to the point where I couldn't breathe. Desite anti-biotics and inflammatory drugs, no relief. Finally had to be sent to an ear, nose and throat specialist. That was followed by CAT scans which showed some sort of fluid that was actually eroding the cartilege inside of my sinuses. Nasal passages were totally blocked at this point. The doctor tried aspirating it in the office. In less than an hour they filled up again. Next day he did minor surgery in the office, where he actually made an incision to drain. Once again, filled back up. Finally he said that he had no choice but to perform a regular operation at the hospital under general anesthesa. That took place on Wednesday. He told me that I still wouldn't be able to breathe through my nose for another week or so due to inflammation ... and I am just now starting to be able to breathe somewhat normally.

I've been out of work now for over three weeks, and flunked out of school (computer-related classes) due to too many classes missed.

I've never had anything like this ... but if it results in my giving up the weed, I guess it was worth it.

Hey girlfriend: I know you can do it, if we could quit anyone can!! :) You can call me anytime you get the urge for a smoke. Remember drink tons of ice water, suck on licorice or hard candy and post on the boards. You can't smoke if your typing :D
