As soon as I can figure out how to upload the pictures I took today, I have some great shots of the Noordam in NYC. I managed to get there at the end of the life boat muster so have that as well as the longshore men casting off the lines and sailaway. We have a brand new camera, so it will take a while to figure it out.
Was supposed to go to the theater with friends, but the stagehands went out on strike which gave me the opportunity to stop at the pier before and after we had lunch with the friends. DH was very patient and sat in the car while I shot away.
Security did come and ask my husband to move his car but he told them his wife was on a board and had to take pictures of the ship. The truth!

Carol, thank you for going to so much trouble on our behalf. Please thank your husband for waiting patiently in the car, as well:) Sorry you couldn't see your play, but certainly appreciate the pictures.

THANK YOU, Carol, for all the trouble you went to for us.
Your last two photos are fabulous!!! She's wearing her dressing flags! :)
I love seeing the beautiful Noordam in New York. Oh what memories!! We hope to sail her one more time before she leaves New York.
What a gorgeous ship she is and how I wish we were aboard right this minute. sigh..........

You can't believe how much fun I had doing this with my brand new camera. DH knows I'm crazy, but there's worse kinds of crazy, I think.
Anyway, I'm now so far gone there is no cure.

Yes, Carol...... There definitely are far worse types of crazy. How can one not love the sight of the beautiful Noordam. I remember the first time we set eyes on her. Took my breath away.
We had sailed Zuiderdam five or six times......but Noordam is is is is is.....can't find just the right word, but Noordam is just so very special IMO

Now I know what's meant when "they" say "bigger is better". Those bigger pictures are fab! :D
What a nice thing to do, Carol, when you went over to get those pictures just for us. :) She's such a beautiful ship---wish I'd been on her. :(

Wonderful photos! I love the photo at dusk; I SO remember that as we sailed out of NYC last spring. And thank your DH as well.
What fun you're going to have with your new camera! And you sure managed to make something good happen out of the disappointment of not being able to go to the theater.

Carol - thanks!!! Great pictures!!! Thanks for going through all of the trouble to get them. We will be sailing on the Noordam at the end of the month. We also have tix for Broadway. Hope strike is over by then. Thanks for making my day:D !!!

Theodoron, I sure hope the strike is over in time for you to enjoy Broadway. We had tickets to a preview of a show that got great reviews and was supposed to open this week. It will take a long time to get them again once the strike is over and the show opens.
Not sure if the theater would have been more fun than taking these pictures.

Thanks mamaofami. The pictures are great!!! The pictures have a higher WOW factor IMO :D - especailly those large ones. :) I hope you get to see a show again sometime soon. I'm trying to figure out what to do if show is cancelled. I guess we will cross that bridge when we come to it. At least on the Noordam out of NYC we will get a chance to sail under one.:)

Just so you know. If the show is canceled, your money will be refunded. I'm sure you would prefer to see the show. And yes, you will sail under that bridge.
I have a feeling the strike won't last too long, especially with the holiday season coming. The theaters, restaurants, hotels, actors, producers and NYC would incur quite a loss. I hope I'm right.

We were also in the city yesterday with theatre tickets, my little and I were supposed to the Grinch, she was so disappointed. My dh and older dd did get to see 25th Annual Spelling Bee, which is not affected by the strike. Anyway, all I wanted to do was go see the Noordam but my daughter thought it would be much more fun to spend the afternoon at Dave and Busters. UGH!!! Thanks for the pictures, they are great.

I heard that some of the actors from Grinch came outside the theater, said they agreed with the stagehands, but then they sang for the kids. T.V. reported that some of the kids were crying because they were so disappointed.
If I had met you standing by the pier, looking at the ship, then there would have been two crazy ladies. My daughter says security probably wrote down my license plate while I was snapping away. Actually, there was another gentleman taking pictures. He said he had never been on a ship and wanted to know where she was sailing to.
I was even talking to the longshoremen. I asked how the ropes closest to the walkway would be released since there was no way to get to them. They told me they were going to jump over the railing to let them go. I said, you must be kidding. They laughed, but then when the time was right, they did jump over and let the lines go. Those ropes get pulled up into the ship. It's really quite fasinating to watch from the pier.
Sail, I never knew ships had dress flags. :)

I had no idea you could get so close without actually entering the pier - or perhaps I am simply deceived by your great new camera.
So where were you while taking the pictures? I have a feeling I might find myself in the same spot the next time the Noordam is in town.

You were lucky. I have tried walking up to the parking garage to take some pictures but security has always chased me away.

Happy Squeals!!!! I'll be sailing her upon her return!!!!
I haven't had much time to plan for this trip, so I came on the board to take a peek at what the beautiful Noordam has been up to, and what a surprise!!!
Great pictures - thanks for sharing!!!

You can walk into the terminal and take pictures from the connecting road between the terminals, but for some reason you cannot go up to the parking area to take pictures.

We pulled into the area marked ship terminal and were parked to the right of the ship in the am. It was about 11 and I knew it would get very busy so we only stayed there about 5 minutes then. When we came back in the afternoon, about 4:10, DH parked in the same place, but there were only about three buses there then. I walked down from where he was parked to right next to the pier building. I was just to the side of the ship. I was really standing right in front of her. No problem I was actually thinking I could have done a wave if the people had come outside and on the left of the bow.
Oh, I forgot. In the am, DH got out of the car for a minute and took the camera and walked down to the ship to take a few shots. (I was sitting in the car then). As he walked back, the police and the security men came strolling by and he just said hello to them and they smiled. It wasn't a problem. I'm 5 feet and blonde, so I guess I don't look like much of a threat.
You shouldn't have any trouble getting as close to the ship as I was. The new camera has a great lense, but then I enlarged the pictures. That was beginners luck because I'm just learning to post pictures.
Hope you have as much fun as I did.

There's also another terminal you can take pictures from, but I was happy just standing in front of the ship. I guess you can't pull up into the parking area because of security and how crowded it gets. Also, by 4pm, the parking area was roped off and closed to traffic.
Wouldn't it be fun if those of us who live in NY met at the pier and snapped away?

Oh, I thought you had gotten into the parking lot on top of the pier!
You must have been in the areas between the terminals where you can get shots of the ships head-on. Were you on the ground floor or elevated (level 1)?
I have been known to walk over to the ship terminals on the weekends after swimming at a gym on 42nd street. :D Nobody seems to have been bothered with me taking pictures (other that trying to get some from the roof top parking lot) I have wondered if they have noticed that I was there fairly often over the summer? I have also been known to drive around the Red Hook terminal...
We could have a shore-based CC meet-and-greet, I guess!

Peter, I was on the walkway in front of the water, leaning against the railing and between the terminals. Outside in the cold. And actually, the picture of the longshore men was taken right next to them which is why it's blurry.

I like that idea!
Thanks for all the tips on getting around to take pictures. Usually I just watch the ships sailing out from Battery Park City or one of the piers along Hudson River Park.
