We are fresh off the Oosterdam's November 3rd Mexican Riviera sailing. There was such a demand for early traditional dining that they made a change in the dining times to accomodate accordingly. Anyone who was set up for early dining, whether upper or lower, could arrive anytime between 5:30 and 6:00 PM.
They did request that you arrive no later than 6:00 PM and they closed the doors shortly thereafter.
We noticed a little slower response from the galley, but not enought to complain about. And, the food and our dining room and wine stewards were wonderful and fulfilled our every request with a big smile. :D Little stories, jokes, tricks, and extra desserts  and entrees were plentiful!
We can't say enough about the service and can-do attitude from the Captain, Hotel Manager, on down to the laundry room guys. We love the Oosterdam! :p

Sounds like a good idea to close the doors. There seems to be alot of complaints on these boards about people being late and the others at the table having to wait.
Looking foward to sailing the "O" next year!

When I booked my cruise departing 12/8/07 there was no option for early or late and was told dining times would be arranged on-board. I have my docs which read main upper. I assumed this was the early seating but it really doesn't matter as long as everyone is happy and they try to accommodate people. I just want to go........:D :D :D :D
Its great to hear the good reports ! Thanks

We are sailing on Oosterdam 12/8/07. We have confirmed "Main Upper" which is the later dining. Our tickets say:
"We are excited to advise you of a new dining concept - Leisure Dining Service ... Simply stated, Leisure Dining Service means you do not have to arrive at the Vista Dining Room at a specific time. Instead we have created two dining time windows which you can use as you please.
For those guests who had confirmed dining times of either 5:45 or 6:15 p.m., you may now come to the Vista DR at any time between 5:45 and 6:15 p.m. We do request that you arrive no later than 6:15.
For those guests who had confirmed dining times of either 8 p.m. or 8:30 p.m., you may now come to the Vista DR at any time between 8 and 9 p.m.
If you have questions, our DR Staff will be available during embarkation from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. outside the Explorer's Lounge on Deck 2."
Thumper 69 - This is set out on Pg. 9 of your tickets. It looks like you have the later dining, but you can check with your TA and, of course, when you get on board with the DR staff. We had confirmed 8 p.m. dining & I understand Main Upper is the later seating. I'm a 1st time HAL cruiser, but somehow I suspect you won't go hungry;) .

ThanksBy 10/4/08 only the Early Upper and Main Upper will be traditional fixed times, while the Lower dining room will be As You Wish Dining. I don't know if the times for Upper will remain at 5:45 and 8:00 or not.
See HAL_INFO (http://www.hollandamerica.com/media/newsRelease.do?fileName=/200707/16_Corporate_01.xml) and the AYWD Sticky Threads at the top of this forum for more info.

On the same page if i remember it's say it's start on january 2008. I cruise with NCL before and they have a free style diner. You come when you are ready. I think holland is trying to do the samethink.
Hope you will love you cruise! I'm a big HAL fan:)

Yes, the AYWD begins on Jan. 5, 2008 - my cruise. I'm hoping that experience from other ships that have made the transition will smoothe the way. I haven't received my docs yet, so I don't know what Uncle Hal has in mind for me.
