Ok, my turn! :-)
All this talk of club sandwiches, cheeseburgers, room service, Havana cigars, rum, etc, has whet my appetite!
What's the best in-cabin meal you had?

Please take note:
Due to the limited space of placing items in a poll, many of my takes are for humourous purposes. Feel free to add anything you wish.
Cheers!

We like to have coffee while getting dressed in the morning. I don't trust myself with a razor until I've had a cup. We only order food if we are wanting to get off early.

We sailed on the Ryndam some years back over St. Patrick's Day. We were in a suite and decided to order our dinner served on the verandah.
The ship was anchored off the coast of St. Lucia. Our view from the verandah at about 9:00 PM was breathtaking. The Southern Cross rising behind the Pitons. We knew the chances of seeing the Southern Cross were 50/50. But seeing that constellation between the Pitons was far more than we ever hoped for.
I don't remember what we ordered for dinner, but I will be forever greatful that we had the opportunity to have room service that night.

I can't answer any of the choices.
We have had breakfast but I wouldn't call it light.
Same goes for lunch.;)

Couldn't select a choice.
We have had full breakfasts out on our verandah.
Also have ordered cheese plates and various appetizers for out on the verandah at sail-away.

I like a whole banana with my coffee, in the morning.
Sadly it’s very hard to come by whole bananas on HAL.
They chop them up, into pieces, and the pieces are in some kind of juice.
I like whole bananas, with my coffee. :(

We have room service breakfast just about every morning when cruising. On our recent cruises, I usually had only coffee and cereal....maybe some cut up fruit. DH often does the omellete, turkey bacon, toast routine.

Do they have things like cookies? On Disney we often ordered a large plate of chocolate chip cookies which were great! I hope they have a sweet something like that to nibble on.

They have the best homemade cookies at both the ice cream bar and at Java Cafe (ships other than Vista Class). Their cookies are wonderful IMO

On the Zuiderdam last Oct or Nov, you could order room service dinner off the menu in the main dining room, not just the room service menu.
Still the case?

There are whole bananas for you to select from.
I never heard/noticed anyone not being able to get a banana....there are always some in the fruit basket in our cabin.
Krazy Kruizers
August 21st, 2004, 08:28 AM
If you don't have a banana in your fruit basket in the cabin, why not call room service and ask for a couple? Or tell your cabin steward.
On some ships there is usually a big bowl of apples, pears, and bananas not cut up - in the Lido.
sail7seas
August 21st, 2004, 10:46 AM
Or......when you write your room service order, indicate on it that you want a whole banana----not one that has been cut up.
Obviously if they deliver the fruit cut into pieces, they started with a whole fruit. Just ask them to leave it the way it grew!!

our first suite experience .. zuiderdam last may... We enjoyed breakfast on our verandah every morning... we ordered eggs, sausage, coffee etc. all arrived on time, hot and delicious.
we also ordered burgers a couple of times when returning to the ship late in port (as we had late dining times) again, they were hot and tasty.
we tried the apps one night..can't say they impressed us too much. we liked the cold apps better then the hot.
we also ordered tonic water, limes etc..
service was always prompt and with a smile!

We never tried room service on our 12-day Mediterranean cruise. Since we had excursions scheduled every morning we thought it best to control our time by going to the buffet every morning. It was so well stocked and we were able to pick our fruits at the right stage of ripeness (I hate half-ripe fruit). That was the Constellation. I hope Carnival and HAL's breakfast buffet is this good.

Dear Vic-The parrot,
We have traveled on a great number of ships. The century on Celebrity lines room service when you are in a SS suite with butler service the room service and food is excellent, From the full breakfast served on white linen table cloths, on your private balcony to the 3pm Tea/coffee with cookies, pastries etc.. and the 5:45pm appetizers, of cavier, shrimp, cheese, salmon all on wonderful gourmet crackers. The in room service can not be beat. The rest of the Cruise and food had a lot to be desired.:)

Used room service once in our Outside cabin (no balcony) & prefer to go to the Lido or Dining Room..
They have the best homemade cookies at both the ice cream bar and at Java Cafe (ships other than Vista Class). Their cookies are wonderful IMO
Sail...
Does that mean that there are no cookies on Vista Class Ships, or there is no Java Cafe or Ice Cream Bar on Vista Class ships..Our first Vista Ship cruise will be on the trans-atlantic Westerdam...There is nothing better than having a cup of coffee (from the Java Cafe) out on deck in Mid Afternoon between reading & resting our eyes (LOL)...My DH would miss the Ice Cream Bar but if they still have tea & pastries in the lounge, he will be fine...

There are no Java Cafes on the Vista class ships even though if you look at a brochure you will see an area marked Java Corner on the Promenade deck. On the Oosterdam is an area with tables and chairs and a covered coffee machine.
The Windstar Cafe sells a special blend of coffee and once you purchase a coffee you can have a pastery.

Breakfast only and just coffee and juice at that. I like to be out among people and really don't like to hang in the room all the time even when we have a balcony. That is one thing DH and I differ on, he is perfectly happy hanging out in the room and I swear he could spend an entire cruise in the room with room service if I would let him!

In the PH and S category suites you can get them from your steward. They're also available in the various bars & lounges.

I'm new to cruising, so I have some questions. You can order breakfast, cheese platters, anything from room service and it doesn't cost anything extra? When you are in the dining room for dinner, can you order just about anything, and if you don't like it, can you order something else?
Thanks

I think they have a standard menu for 24 hr. room service with pretty basic items: some things for people with queasy stomache, plus club sandwich and some other simple stuff. Breakfast order forms are delivered nightly to be filled in and left outside your cabin by 2 am. You may order what is on the dinner menu to be delivered during dinner hours, although I don't know how you would know what is on the menu unless you are in a suite, which I think gives the daily menu ahead of time. We always took a walk to the dining room to see what was on the menu for dinner, and we always ate in the dining room. I have read that if you write in what you want you can usually get it, but haven't ever asked myself! I can hardly eat all they serve. We try to skip lunch or breakfast or have one light meal a day. I loved most of dinner items so I end the day stuffed! :D

Just coffee and "light" breakfast items. I wake up early and NEED that coffee before I can open my eyes fully!
I much prefer to be out and about and socialize for other times. Maybe I would order Room Service if I weren't feeling well.

Room service is nice. I would have liked it better if they had been on time. We ordered room service 3 times for breakfast, and it was on time only once. The other two times it was 15 min before we asked for it. We did not complain though. The first time the server apologized, but said that there were so many breakfast ordered, and he had to get them all out.
The last time, no apology. I tipped every time, regardless.

Full Breakfest every morning, usually 6AM. We like to get the same waiter every morning, so get to know him first day and request that he be our breakfest steward for the duration of the cruise. It has worked out well. Service has been excellent, hot and always on time. Of Course, he becomes one that gets EXTRA tips for the accomodation.
Our last breakfest steward had to shake Ed's hand last day...and asked if he could give me a hug! Really sweet young man on his first tour. :D

We had the same problem, never complained and tipped generously, but on port days we felt it really was so much earlier than our requested time that room service should have been able to make other arrangements.
We always set our alarm for 15 minutes earlier than our room service requested time, to be sure we are awake and up, knowing they might be 5 minutes or so early, which we understand. (I would rather they come 5 minutes early than at the end of the half hour time period.) However, this last cruise one day we had requested 7-7:30 and the knock on the door was at 6:40!Again he said they were busy and had to start early. I thought that was a bit too early.

Best Meal for me was a pajama party in our Penthouse Suite on the Amsterdam. We were traveling with friends and family. There were 6 of us all together and we had a fabulous time being served a first class dinner in our P.J.'s!
Actually, every meal in that suite was great!

We like to have breakfast in the cabin. Coffee/toast, or cereal, always with fruit. I guess it is a way for us to control our caloric intake in the easiest way :).
