Setting sail on the Zuiderdam on October 2nd and I recently read somewhere that in the main dining room, you are not to wear tank tops and shorts. Is this true for both men and women. I was planning on bringing a bunch of tank tops with me and maybe a few skirts for the dining room. This dress code thing seems very confusing. I would appreicate any help. Thanks

Tanks were covered in the blender thread. If you bring a tank with you, no one is going to stop you from entering the DR, regardless of what you're wearing.:D

Seriously, a little while ago someone posted that on the Statendam people wearing shorts were being stopped from entering the DR during breakfast and lunch. However, this has not happened on other ships. I'm not sure about tank tops, but I think you'd be fine during breakfast and lunch.

Aside from a few reports of "no shorts allowed" on Statendam a few months ago as Orcrone said, I have never heard of any problem of ladies wearing shorts and tank tops to the dining room for Breakfast and Lunch......NOT for dinner. HAL's dining rooms are elegant and very beautiful. Most people feel it appropriate to dress nicely when going there....that does not mean 'all dressed up'.

Last year on the Zuiderdam, I wore walking shorts and a t-shirt or polo to breakfast in the dining room. I'm always freezing, and the dining room seemed chilly to me... I would be a popsicle in a tank top !

That was ME that posted about the NO shorts in the dining room at breakfast and lunch on the Statendam - friends had just returned from a Hawaii cruise and were telling me that she was not allowed into the DR in her shorts - she was absolutely flabbergasted as she has always worn them before.

When I asked the Maitre'd on the Rotterdam about this he said he never heard of such a directive but maybe the Maitre'd on the Statendam was just reading the directive they got from HO about cracking down on the dress code the wrong way and was being overly officious. I was allowed in the dining room on the Rotterdam the one morning I ate breakfast there in Bermuda shorts which is what I wear.

Tank top if OK for women, but please not for men. :p

Esme, you beat me to it. I wanted to ask how people feel about tank tops for men in the dining room?? The post was about women, but I think men in tank tops in the dining room are a no-no.

When I was on the Z in July there was a sign at the doorway of the diningroom that said no swimsuits or sleeveless tops allowed during breakfast and lunch...didn't mention anything about shorts.

I hope sleeveless is okay for women as I have a number of sleeveless sweaters and linen tank tops.

I went to special care in my response to indicate "ladies wearing shorts and tank tops" for breakfast and lunch. I did not even get into a discussion about men. Personally, I would wear shorts (what some of you refer to as bermuda shorts). I do not think I'd like to come to the dining room in a tank.....but then again, some formal dresses are sleeveless and well could have a low V neck or even low round neck. What would be the difference when seated? One would see Barearms and low neck in a cotton tank top at breakfast or barearms and low neck in a perfectly appropriate crepe long black sheathe on formal night?

I'll agree with Esme and Peaches on the no tank tops for men in the dining room.

This brings to mind a time when I was serving myself something in the lido buffet line and a tall man reached over me to get something. All I got was a faceful of hairy arm pit..UGH!! They should be banned in public places on board.......jean

I've noticed that the dress code is more relaxed in the Caribbean than it is on other cruises. It seems as though the longer the cruise the more restrictive the codes.

The temperature in the dining room is always too cold for me. I tend to wear slacks and a golf shirt or sometimes a long sleeved shirt buttoned over my tank top.

At dinner I almost always wear an outfit that has a jacket. Otherwise I freeze.

I stopped eating in the dining room for breakfast and lunch a long time ago. Too much hassle and I really don't want the fashion police after me all the time. Until I have my coffee I don't even want to talk to anyone let alone discuss my attire.

I love to dress for dinner most of the time. I also like the option of eating at the lido in comfy clothes if I want. DH always dresses nicely and only wears a tank top when he works in the yard or washes the car.

They should be banned in public places on board.......jean :cool:Jean - I have to admit, that's not a pretty picture you paint. But I wear them on the way to the pool, as many men do. Then I take off my tank top when I arrive there. So I shouldn't wear them on the way to the pool, but then it's OK to not wear any shirt?

I can definitely see outlawing them in dining areas, though.

Also, anyone who will reach over someone to get some food, instead of waiting until he or she gets to that place in line obviously needs a few etiquette lessons.

I have worn shorts and what some might consider a tank top to breakfast many times in the dining room. Actually, the tops look dressier than a T shirt from my collection of T shirts with Iguanas. :D

:)

Husband and I have both worn bermudas into the dining room for breakfast and lunch. Husband never wears anything but a sports shirt for tours, etc., - never a tank top or a t-shirt. I wear sleeveless blouses all the time - have very fancy ones for evening as I am always HOT.

I wear sleeveless blouses all the time too!

I would take great exception to someone not allowing me to come into the dining room with a sleeveless blouse, especially in the tropics!!

Happy to report that this was not an issue on the Ryndam in Alaska, and as we had more than one very warm day, I believe I did go to breakfast with a nice cotton sleeveless blouse and no one said a word. If they did, I would have protested loudly!!!

I also wore sleeveless dresses to the dining room on many occasions, again nothing was said and I appeared to be dressed as nicely or nicer than many of the other cruisers!!

Localady......I hope you did not misunderstand my post to mean I think there is anything wrong with sleeveless. Most of my formalwear is sleeveless. I do not happen to wear much sleeveless during the day but not because I do not think it approrpriate. It is simply not my most comfortable look. I prefer a short sleeve. Just a matter of you like this/I like that.

S7S- Not at all!!!! I agree with you 100%. I too prefer sleeveless tops as my body temperature always runs very warm. What I meant was if I was on a HAL ship, and was turned away from the dining room for this, I would protest, and possibly loudly at that!!

It's not sexist at all to say men shouldn't wear tanks in the DR, I don't care if you're Mr. Universe or 100 lbs overweight. I have never seens a men's casual tank top that is similar to a woman's casual tank top-- nice, linen, rayon, whatever. Maybe they exist but I've never seen anyone even wearing one, and would prefer not to see hairy armpits myself when I'm eating :D JMO

When it comes to proper attire in the Dining Room, lets try and me more classy as opposed to less classy at all times. Holland is a classy line. Let's be classy people.

I see most of the women are against men wearing tank tops in general and specifically in any of the restaurants. However, they think that shorts are perfectly OK. I agree that tank tops are not proper attire in the dining rooms at any time. I will probably get flamed for this, but if you think men look bad in tank tops, consider how bad most people over 40 look in shorts. Those varicose veins really pep up my appetitie. I would vote for no shorts in the dining rooms at any time.

I think that the issue of men vs. women in tank tops is not the "hairy armpit" issue. I own several tank tops. I used them to go out to the pool, or to the gym or to go scuba diving. They're not something that anyone would consider appropriate in a restaurant. On the other hand women have tank tops available to them that are not designed as workout gear, and would be appropriate in a restaurant.

It would be the same difference as a person wearing a nice pair of Khaki shorts to the DR, vs. wearing a pair of gym shorts.

Ah yes, bare feet... We were eating breakfast at Cracker Barrel yesterday morning. The young (20ish) woman across the aisle slipped her feet out of her sandals and put her bare feet on the chair across the table from her. How appealing!! :( You wonder how she was raised and who raised her!

This discussion of male vs female tanktops shows one of the oddities of our advanced civilization.

A woman will pat a man on his stomach without thought, escpecially if the stomach is rotund...but just let a man pat a woman where she's rotund....
