Ship board credit/gifts what if you cancel cruise

If friends/family give you a ship board credit what happens if you have to cancel the cruise? Thought that I might add ship board credit to my Christmas list this year since the only thing I had on my wish list for last Christmas was Beef Jerky:)

I don't know about HAL but we bought my grandmother a credit for a Princess cruise that she ended up cancelling for health reasons and they gladly refunded the credit and it showed up quickly on our credit card.

If friends buy you a gift (money or other) and you don't make the cruise, as long as they used a CREDIT CARD, they shouldn't have any problems getting their money back.

Holland America will refund the funds paid for ship services items and prepaid tours. Doesn't matter how you pay, though a credit card is easier to track and easier for them to refund quickly.
